Well done review and well edited. She gives examples and then we see/hear them. One of the better Banger reviews that I've watched. Made me much more interested in the album even though I've never been a fan of Enslaved.

Enslaved is just one of those bands that goes unnoticed from popular trends and movements that ends up drawing sacrosanct strength that makes it that much more relevant not just in music but also folklore and a sort of tradition that too many modern styles of music forget to add that makes Enslaved that much more appealing and rare. It’s like that one rare producer / musician of the likes of Steven Wilson, Rick Rubin and Cannonball Adderley who help forge or even create new sounds and styles that become paramount to future generations. I’ve always was a fan ever since Sam Dunn introduced alternative genres throughout the world in both Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey and Global Metal. Thank you Sam for the introduction.

Great review! And I really appreciate you had a whole section calling out the production, my first impression listening to this album was that the production is absolutely stellar. They do it all themselves. These are experts at the top of their craft, full of new ideas, and like Riley says, with even more to give. I have my tickets already for their show in April, can't wait to see them for probably the fifth or sixth time, they never disappoint.

I don't know what it is but I feel like I just got more informed by this reviewer more than any other on the channel by far. Dekay did in flames it it seemed to me he judt didn't like it becasue it wasn't a Florida death metal album. I had no idea what the album contained, but I feel like I know exactly what to expect from this review. Well done.

I just went and listened to the album after this review and was not expecting to find my new favorite fix. Along with Might and Power by Megaton Sword this release is my new favorite of 2023. The cleans over the grooves and the brutal drumming were so intense and it was exactly what I needed.

Really good review. I'm enjoying this album. Enslaved have taken me on a journey into droning and dissonance that I didn't anticipate. I came in on probably the most accessible album to a simpler thrash guy like myself, Ruun. Their albums feel like I'm being led through vast, weird time and space. Hoping to see them on this tour.

Enslaved have constantly put out fantastic material from album to album, even though the albums that appeared after In Times felt like, while they were all magnificent in their own right, that the band was going through the motions a little bit. Riitiir was the album that really got me into them. It does a great job blending some of the heaviness from their early albums with the proggy/psychedelic vibes of their later stuff. Has some really memorable songs on it too like death in the eyes of dawn, roots of the mountain, and thoughts like hammers. I'd recommend it to just about anyone who likes metal.

Ruun and Isa are classic Enslaved albums that bridge their old black metal and new progressive sounds in really amazing ways. From there it is a pleasure to work backward into the black metal and forward into the progressive. They don't have any bad albums so at the end of the day you can pick up anything.

Seriously, can you guys please review that Ne Obliviscaris album actually? I think the two singles were genuinely incredible, like the epic banger about forest fires Equus, 12 minutes of banging drums, gorgeous violins and their classic vocals in full capacity. This band has always had some odd controversies surrounding it so I feel like they aren't as big as they could be but their music is undeniable.

After E, Ivar was hinting at it being the start of a new phase of the band. It was, overall, a bit less (Black) Metal and more experimental, atmospheric and progressive. It got a bit of backlash from the purists and metal kids ('meandering, doesn't go anywhere', etc, etc). 2 members left at that point. I have no idea whether it had to do with the musical direction of the album or Ivar's intended, future, musical direction (the drummer said he was getting old and tired more easily and wanted to spend more time with his family and the keyboard player/ vocalist said he was pursuing different musically related projects). Anyway, it seemed like a massive coincidence that it was after such a massive departure in their overall sound and approach, which garnered so many unflattering reviews. I personally loved it. Loved Storm Son, Feathers Of Eolh, Hiindsiight, Djupet, all of it! Now, what do we get after E, and the apparent effects that it had? 2, seemingly, quite similar, albums with sporadic brutal Black/ Death sections, ala Axioma Ethica Odini, within cut and paste song structuring formats. With new members. In other words, music much like they were doing before E, but which doesn't seem to flow, from one section, or one song, to the next, quite like the albums before them (and, therefore 'the band') were capable of doing with, what had been, the longest, most stable, lineup the band had ever had. Any day that Enslaved release a new album is a great day, in my eyes. But I fear that they lost a little of their mojo when the 2 longtime members left and are trying to win back old fans that they may have lost by doing E. Ivar even called the great Riitiir 'their worst album'. Yeah, the one that had the most Metal identity and some of their greatest 'songwriting' songs on it. Now it seems like there are a lot of Gruttle-growl-forward sections. They still have great ideas and inspirations, they're just inserted haphazardly and disjointedly in between the Gruttle-forward, fast, blast beaten bits. And Gruttles best vocals are behind him (on In Times). I don't think it's capability related. I think his gravellier, less BM shrieked, delivery is planned but not great. It's not all bad. Homebound, from Utgard, was great. Maybe they should take longer refining their songs before releasing them, looking for an actual common thread between them, so that their songs and their album flow better and come together, more cohesively. Like the album has a common thread, theme, character, concept or set of ideals. Up to, and including, E, all their albums had an individual, kind of, character. Now it seems 'cut and paste', 'look at how clever we are'. Hopefully further time spent with Heimdal will prove me wrong. But, for the magnitude of Enslaved fan that I am (they're one of my favourite bands) I was not particularly impressed by Utgard and I'm not digging Heimdal, so far.
@MatusDust

I agree for the most part. I loved everything they done up until In Times, then after 2 members left the band is just not the same anymore. I try to get into it with every album, but something is definitely missing.

@@MatusDust It's amazing how every Enslaved fan can point at their favourite period of the band. It's actually great that they have evolved over their career and that we can now say what our favourite period was out of, maybe, 4 (with some overlap). Unlike Metallica, where there are only 2 camps (and I'm in the '1st 4 albums and a couple of songs off the 5th' club, ha)
