I lived in Lagos for 5 years, I never went to makoko cos it's as slum as slum gets. It took a Tommy, a traveller, to show me my own backyard. Bless you man. You going to places even Nigerians don't go.

It's just incredible how we take life for granted here in North America. Its absolutely a heartbreaking reality to see good people of the African world who are less fortunate. What that guy was trying to explain at the beginning is that, if they had taken you through the normal route where you dont have to enter water area boys (thugs) would have extorted and obtained you, they took you through that route with water because they know how makoko is. that place is a poor area and some people there turn to crime to survive.

This is another awesome video Tommy. I had no idea that a "ghetto" like this existed in Africa. I know of Asian places that look like that on the water. My heart was in my throat watching those babies carrying infants on their backs and standing on the edge of the platform. They could have fallen in at any moment. They have so little, but also they have a lot. They are fed, they have shelter, schools, family and friends. They seem to share a great sense of community. I actually like the way they live...........minus the dirty water!

The Venice of Nigeria, there are some nice waterfront real estate among the slum homes. Not just fun but informational as usual, great video.

I don't even know what to say. I was born in Lagos and I have also traveled far, speak and write different foreign languages fluently but I have never been to Makoko before. I read the village is the only place in the world where ppl pay for the garbage dump, to be placed in front of their homes. What can I say? The government is not willing to break the bank(Like Nederlands) to help alleviate the people from such a disaster they dragged themselves. There is no way the government can run away from her shadows. Makoko will continue to reflect in the international propagandistic mind control media as the slum Nigerians live on. The foreign media narrative is however too poor to the people of that village. The foreign media sees it as a political move to shithole a country they could not fully hijack completely. To the ordinary people, the foreign media does not help them in such a case because the Nigerian government will continue to find a way of rubbing them off the map. Given the fact that about 200,000 people live there and to a population of 200,000,000. That is 0.001% of Nigerians. The population is well more than many villages I have been to or lived in Abroad. Makoko got the manpower to take the village to the next level with help of the government and the people. They can start with a dredging machine for example to get sand from the sea and landfill the village. This is what they did to EKO-Atlantic, can be done here too. This is not to shun the international propaganda mind-controlling media network but for the sake of humanity

If it could just be cleaned up some, they could have tours like the floating villages in Asia do. It would bring in more money for the locals there. That would be far better than knocking the place down and obliterating the culture these people have created over the years. Just an idea.

Seeing your tour around Makoko slum community gave me memory down 2 years ago, whilst I had to do a group intervention with colleagues as part of my course study in M.Sc Public Health. They are so used to NGOs and foreigners coming to help them. There are about 6 local heads presiding over the different dialects there. They literally live on where they defecate (the ones living on the water). The blackness of the water is as result of sewage and effluent from drainages from the cities outside there. There is nothing you can do to help a people who see poverty as a culture. Poor sanitation, poor hygiene and lives dependent on fishing. On the other side of the coast, across the lagoon from Makoko slum, lies the most luxurious island for the Super Rich--Banana Island. It is hard to be born there and grow above the life of the slum.
