In western Rwanda lies Lake Kivu, which marks the border between Rwanda and the DRC (Congo). Not too long ago, it was possible to easily cross the border at Gisenyi and spend a day or 2 in neighboring Goma. But these days the border, like everything else, has become a complicated mess. One day, after downing a few glasses of the local Gwagwa moonshine, I decided I would walk all the way to the border and try to sweet talk my way in. This is the record of that journey.

Tommy, thank you for showing us these awesome places in Africa. I am a senior of 65 and I have stage 4 cancer. I live through your journeys, and I pray that before I go to the Lord that I can still visit Africa. I have seen all of your videos at least three times. I watch everyday, and I can hardly wait to see when a new one comes. thank you from the bottom of my heart. I've been trying to pick up a few words in Swahili too. I love you. stay safe and may God bless you always.

My family and I were traveling through Rwanda and Uganda for 3 weeks back in 2016. My brother has been working for many years in Kigali and met his wife there, an Ugandan. The reason we went there was for his wedding. We not only traveled the Rwandan and Ugandan countryside for several weeks but also witnessed two wedding ceremonies - one in church, one in the tribe. Our travel group consisted of 5 muzungus (Germans), 1 Ugandan plus the respective driver. My brother can speak some Kinyarwanda and is used to dealing with begging children. I knew we wouldn't be able to stop at any random spot in the street without having locals gravitating towards us out of curiosity and in the hopes of selling us something. My brother had instructed us to remain calm. At some point or other, it became really aggravating that we couldn't just admire the landscape for a few minutes. Each time we stopped somewhere, it would take only a few seconds (I kid you not) and we would be surrounded by an army of children, telling us to give them 1000 Ruanda-Francs or a soda or cigarettes (my mom was the smoker in our group and always had her cigarettes at the ready for occasional smoking breaks). The adults would usually huddle around and shove various bits of merchandise in our faces. We told them kindly and in several languages that we weren't interested. My brother often said to the kids in Kinyarwanda that they shouldn't waste their time on us as we just wanted to move along in peace. We knew that not all parents could afford the school fees. Yet the way they intentionally and unabashedly asked for specific things and didn't stop after we voiced our disinterest, was getting frustrating. We tried to be patient and to take it in stride. I remember at the Ndaba falls, two kids started singing as soon as we had stepped out of the car and were still stretching our legs. We didn't ask them to perform, they did it out of their own volition and naturally, they wanted payment afterwards. I think we solved the situation by asking them to tell us a bit about the waterfall, so that they wouldn't get the impression they had tricked their way into making us pay. It wasn't always easy because we, as muzungus, tried to not offend anybody but sometimes, being very clear and vigorous was the only way to get out of unpleasant situations. The kids didn't seem to be fazed at all, they would always keep trying at any given moment. What frustrated me the most was that the kids must have learned that behaviour somewhere, i.e. most likely from their parents. It ruined part of the innocence, in my opinion. Props to you for staying so calm, man!

Interesting. It’s got me wondering whether the war changed the citizens’ sense of independence and self- sufficiency...
@ch3shire_kat
@ch3shire_kat 2 жыл бұрын
@@catherinecege8659 it's possible.. I am aware they might simply have adopted the notion from TV and other media that white people are usually wealthier ...I also understand that children might just parrot whatever English sentence they know (in Rwanda especially)...however, they also asked us for money in French and Kinyarwanda..and they asked for specific amounts, not just any change we could spare... We noticed the elder generations missing..we mostly had to do with people ages 1-40ish.. we rarely encountered any elderly people and the few ones kept their distance except one proud grandpa who wanted to show us his cattle herd...Maybe the way we were traveling sorta checked all the boxes for people to gravitate to us but we were actually trying to not draw too much attention, i.e. we did travel light, we hired locals who drove us around and we always had Ethel, my Ugandan sister-in-law lead any kind of monetary debates so that the locals wouldn't try to rip us off too badly :D Rwanda is definitely an insanely beautiful country and my family and I are also really open-minded and multi-cultural...however, my sense of privacy was so heavily invaded in Africa that I had a hard time adjusting...The Rwandan people in particular are hard to read since they show very little emotion in their faces..We often encountered silly problems because they would rather invent a creative lie instead of simply telling us if they didn't know or if stuff was sold out...Once, at Kibuye, we were told the entire Kivu lake was closed (!) because the chef at the hotel didn't know how to fry a fish my brother had ordered. Another time, I ordered a chocolate milkshake at a hotel, the waiter asked me what would go inside it, I told him "chocolate icecream", he came back 30 minutes later and told me chocolate milkshake was finished, so then I ordered strawberry, another 30 minutes later he told me strawberry was finished...as a last resort I then ordered vanilla and got it after another 30 minutes...so, I spent 1 1/2 hours waiting for a milkshake that wasn't my fav flavour because the waiter didn't tell me right from the start that everything besides vanilla was finished, lmao...And yet another time we asked our driver to refuel the car, we gave him money and he told us the next day he had refueled the car; we went for a trip and had to refuel along the way and we found out the driver didn't even know where the fuel tank was; he had taken the money and not told us he couldn't refuel...I'm not saying that all Rwandans behave that way..maybe just the random ones we met...My family and I welcome honesty and would have appreciated them admitting outright if things we asked for weren't possible...Their way around it was creative and also entertaining yet sometimes annoying...Long story short: the civil war probably did a number on them..half the elder generation is missing and the younger people seem like they lost guidance in one way or other...Note we still like the country a lot. I'm not trying to badmouth Rwanda. I'm just saying that for a tourist things can get really confusing.

@@ch3shire_kat I feel sorry for you as a Rwandan. Honesty it has been a mindset here that all Bazungu are wealthy and they carelessly give money. But this mindset disappears as people get educated. And most of time people used to think that even a native of village would buy them something when he/she comeback to rural areas. Then, the way they somehow force you to buy, annoys almost everyone especially me, I just tell them OYA(NO) Rwandans, we need to respect everyone's privacy.

Born and raised in Africa and living in MN, people ask me all the time, is it safe for an American to go to Africa? Well, like l tell them all the time, yes! I hoe they see these videos of a white American man walking around in Africa, all by himself, with a camera and loving those beautiful curvy African women. Enjoy my brother. Thanks for all these videos. I connect it to my and watch it all the time with my kids. I want to take them to Africa soon so l want them to get the feel of the place. One thing l want you to always do is RESPECT the people, like u always do. They will take good care of you. I promise u. Stay safe my dude.

Your videos are hands down the best vlogger videos I've ever seen, I don't know how you do it but you get the people to react to the camera better than reality TV even does it doesn't even seem like they notice the camera, I really enjoy your videos I am amazed by the low view count I don't understand that

Amazing videos. I find it so amazing the fact that you visite a place, learn the language as much as possible (Super Impressive!). In my opinion, you should be given access to every country. Your drive to learn new cultures is AMAZING! Swing by Burundi if you can. Not far from where you are! Blessings
