IDAHO FALLS - Gerry Vallow wasn’t sure what to say when his 9-year-old granddaughter asked, “What happened to Uncle Charles?”
It was another reminder that his older brother was gone - shot and killed in a Chandler, Arizona, home two years ago this month.
“I just lost it. And anytime anyone talks about it, I kind of lose it. It’s an emotional thing, and we’re supposed to be macho guys, but this is beyond that,” Gerry Vallow tells EastIdahoNews.com during a Zoom interview with his wife, Melanie Vallow, from their Texas home.
Gerry has not spoken publicly about his brother’s death or the criminal cases involving Lori Vallow Daybell and Chad Daybell. Both are facing multiple charges in Idaho for the deaths of Lori’s children, Joshua “JJ” Vallow and Tylee Ryan, and Chad’s wife, Tammy Daybell. A grand jury in Arizona indicted Lori on Thursday for conspiracy to commit the murder of Charles Vallow. Her brother, Alex Cox, shot and killed Charles. Cox died - of natural causes - five months later in December 2019.
“I would just like to sit down and look Lori in the eyes and talk to her. I really would. I’d like to ask her a couple of questions,” Gerry says. “I would tell her she is not some reincarnated deity. She’s not some god on earth that’s going to lead people to the end of the world when Jesus comes.”
Charles was two years older than Gerry, and the two brothers grew up playing baseball together. Charles was funny, positive and a “pleasure to be around,” according to Gerry and Melanie. They admit he wasn’t perfect, but he was a good guy who was “crazy in love” with Lori.
Melanie and Gerry knew Lori and Charles were experiencing some marital problems but said Charles was determined to make things work. About a month before he was killed, he and JJ visited Melanie, who was recovering from a serious illness.
“Charles traveled a lot to Houston where we live, and he stayed with us, so I had a lot of time with him,” Melanie recalls. “This has been very difficult for me because he and I got along very, very well. He said Lori was going to move to Houston and try to work it out. I asked him if he thought it was a good idea, and he said, ‘I gotta make it work.’ He loved her.”
Gerry learned Charles was dead when his sister, Kay Woodcock, phoned him and another brother on a conference call. He said he couldn’t comprehend the news and did not want to talk about it with anyone.
Three or four months ago, as he was sitting on the back porch thinking about the chain of events, he says he lost it.
“It just hit me. I’m not a mad guy or angry, but I went into a rage. An anger got to me that I didn’t understand. I’ve never felt that mad before,” he says. “I called a friend, and she told me I have to talk about it. I always hold things in, but she said to let people hear about my brother and start talking about it.”
Melanie and Gerry have followed the events of the past two years - from Lori and Chad fleeing to Hawaii, their arrests, the discovery of JJ and Tylee’s bodies in Chad’s backyard, murder charges and now a court decision that Lori is incompetent for trial.
When asked for his reaction to the competency ruling, Gerry is blunt.
“She ain’t crazy. That b**** knew exactly what she was doing. And that’s the truth,” he says.
Melanie adds, “I’m hoping she becomes competent really soon. I’m going to let the Lord handle that. I’d rather not judge her competency even though I know full well she knew what she was doing.”
Melanie says she prays for Lori every night, and despite being a death penalty advocate, she and Gerry hope Lori and Chad spend the rest of their lives in prison as death “is an easy way out.” Idaho prosecutors have not yet indicated if they plan to pursue the death penalty.
The Vallows know “justice takes time” and are being patient with the court system. They say they don’t hate Lori, and regardless of how the complicated criminal cases are resolved, they trust in a higher power.
“The creator of the universe will judge her. Not me. That gives me comfort because I’m not a judge,” Gerry says. “I don’t hate. I don’t allow that emotion in my heart. In a way, I feel sorry for her.”

One of the most frustrating elements in this case to me. Is Charles tried so hard to get help. He seemed genuinely worried for the children. We need to focus more on safety first where children are concerned I feel. Someone needs to be able to intervene when there is a concern. Keep the children safe until the concern is proved true or false.

One of my friend's who was a Judge always told me he would always error on the side of protecting a child before the accused ... the reason his courthouse was one of the first to get TSA quality screening put in was because he found a dad guilty of SA against his child and the guy pulled a gun and fired several shots before he was subdued. The next time he was ruling against a parent (this time a mother) she reached into her bag and started to pull something dark out ... He immediately ducked behind his dias, the bailiffs swarmed ... we all got a huge laugh because she was just getting a twinkie for her child 😳 Absolutely true stories from Ckackamas County OR

It’s sad to say, but this case would have been completely overlooked, same as Tammy’s death if the children had not ended up murdered. There needs to be more investigation into cases like these where relatively young people have died or been killed under suspicious circumstances.
@murphy1011
@murphy1011 3 жыл бұрын
But unfortunately, the kids were never going to not be murdered. I believe Lori is a serial killer. I’m under the impression that Alex and Chad did all the dirty work, but they did it for her and she’s the one that initiated things. She’s also the one who got the most gratification from the murders. At the same time, I don’t think this would have happened had she not met chad. Or maybe what I’m trying to say is it wouldn’t have gone as far? All I know is that this is a rare case of the absolute worst people coming into each other’s lives. It took Chad, Lori and Alex as a group for all of this to happen. It’s a very rare situation that we’ve been watching. I also think that Lori and Alex had a relationship beyond being brother and sister, which adds another level to things that we’ve never seen before.
@cheryl8466
@cheryl8466 3 жыл бұрын
@@murphy1011 That's an interesting theory. I never thought about it that way. Now that you mentioned it.. I'm sure something would have eventually happened. You're probably right, it may not have gotten as far as the kids though.. I will say, I agree I definitely think she was the driving force behind all of these murders. I know her family and friends were coming out saying how great of a person she was at 1st... I don't buy it. I normally don't judge so harshly at 1st, when I know so little but... I really have a hard time seeing her as Any kind of innocent bystander. Just from hearing her speak, you can tell she's a huge manipulater. I'm interested to see what kind of other information comes out.

@@murphy1011 yeah I get where you’re coming from too and I do agree to some point that Lori was always going to keep going but who’s to say if the police had gotten onto Charles’ murder earlier she might not have gone ahead with it if she was already being looked at for his murder. 20/20 is great but my point is how many other cases out there are being gotten away with because there isn’t huge scrutiny come upon those responsible due to even worse crimes, hopefully there aren’t other cases that are being overlooked because it’s a one off life insurance murder is all.

Lori created so much devastation to so many people. She's an evil, destructive force who needs to pay together with her accomplices for their crimes. I think she is very fit for trial, all of her dark deeds took a lot of planning and manipulation. She knew exactly what she was doing. My heart is breaking for all the people who loved Charles, Tylee, JJ and Tammy. Justice for all of them.Stay strong.

Thank you Gerry & Melanie for sharing with us who Charles was to you and giving a little more insight on who Lori was. Although I do feel that Lori knew how to get what she wanted and how to manipulate men, I also believe she was just as easily manipulated by Chad. I think she truly wanted to believe that she had purpose and that she was more than just some pretty blonde. Unfortunately she took everything Chad fed her to the extreme to believe she was some sort of Goddess, but I just cannot fathom giving up a husband who genuinely loved her, her children, brother or anyone else for someone like Chad. It just baffles me. I pray that she comes out of her little fantasy world soon, realizes what she's done and is held accountable for her actions. In the meantime I'm looking forward to Chad's conviction. I wish I could be a fly on the wall when he faces his judgement day with God, but hopefully I get to witness his judgement day with the Jury. It couldn't come soon enough!

I think Lori had to be a little disturbed before she met Chad Dumbell. She couldn't have have done a 180 like that so quickly. She had evil inside of her from the get go I believe. I wonder how her sister passed away.

@@user-uo4hl4dc4b Everybody close to her has said she began to change once she started reading Chad's books, which is my understanding was a few years before she actually met him. I also believe she suffered from some sort of mental disorder prior to all this. Possibly due to some sort of trauma she endured as a child or young adult? Idk but I believe she developed some sort of fascination with Chad through his books, which amplified once she met him in person and he started feeding her his line of garbage.

I still believe wholeheartedly that Lori and Chud manipulated each other for their own purposes and that Lori is keeping up this act of being delusional so that she still receives understanding and a measure of sympathy from her family and fellow inmates. Can you imagine how they would treat her if she was actually ,for once, honest and they saw her for what she actually has been for years probably, a narcissistic sociopathic , and now serial killer?

It’s just so sad for Charles family. I can so relate to how helpless Charles felt with the inability to get mental health help for Lori. I had a mother who was just evil and she was always in a state of craziness that no one could help us to get her help or to try and control her destructive ways. After dealing with my mother for 30 years I could say she wasn’t mentally ill but she was just evil claiming to be mentally ill. She gamed the system from the time she was 20 years old until her death at 74. The day she died was the happiest day of my life unfortunately. It was just such a relief to not have to worry about her trying to kill one of her children or some other innocent person. Prison will be too good for both Lori and Chad but it will be more punishment for them to have to be controlled by someone else so they can’t hurt anyone else.

We are going through a similar thing. So far nobody is dead, but getting law enforcement and the judicial system to take it seriously is impossible. Our concern has been committed twice and is diagnosed a schizophrenic, yet the judge still thinks this man should be alone with his child. The child, he has made it clear he believes has been programmed with neural dust ( what ever that is). And he wants to deprogram the child. The child is afraid of his dad, yet he has legal rights to take off with the child. We have spent over $80, in court and lawyer fees to protect our child. It took two years to get a temp custody order. We go to court in July and pray they don’t let that man be alone with the child till he is safe.
