I babysat for $40 a day, twice a week for 8 hours each day. I was broke and in college at the time and it was for my mom’s friend. Looking back, I didn’t even realize that they were getting such a good deal 😭.

I think it really depends on the kids and how much work the babysitter is actually supposed to do. $40 for 8h of actual childcare definitely is shitty pay but if you only have to microwave their dinner and occasionally check on the kids and you have plenty of time to do your school work or whatever it isn't such a bad deal.

My brother became a super entitled parent when it came to babysitting, and also expected people to just do it for free. My mom would drive an hour, early in the morning, and stay all day with their toddler, for free. Then, my brother would come home and have the audacity to get mad because she wanted to leave right away (another hour drive home). He would throw a fit about how he worked all day and needs a break and she needs to stay at least half an hour after he gets home so he can "relax". If she was ever late, he'd also have a tantrum. It got to the point where my mom showed up one day and he had another fit about something, and she just left. Told him to find someone else to watch his kid. He had to take the day off. Eventually, he and his wife had to alter their work schedules, so one works nights and the other days, and they never ever get a break as they swap working and childcare. Bummer for them calling mom's bluff.

Sorry she had to deal with this! It’s the kids that really suffer but I’m glad she stood up for herself. I can so relate. Just yesterday my dil threatened to not allow our gs to stay over because I asked for her to talk to me, rather than the 7 year old about pick up times. Only been watching him, for free since his birth but I guess staying the night is off the table; not the free weekly day babysitting though, because I ask to be directly communicated with.

As a former nanny and childcare worker, I legit CHOKED ON AIR as you were reading that first one. If you want someone to be responsible for your child’s life, you can expect to pay more like $20/hr not a DAY. For $20/day, I’ll throw your kid a pack of raw hotdogs, sit them in front of the TV, and point a baby monitor at them whilst running errands. I’d never do that, btw! Don’t yell at me 🤣

YES!!! OMG! If you are willing to spend that much on your child then you deserve a high schooler who will just prop the kids in front of the TV and be on their cell phone the entire time lol. I have had so many entitled people try to tell me that 20 dollars a day is a reasonable amount because babysitting/nannying isn’t a real job. Yet want someone who is First aid certified, with experience, and a good driving record. WTF is wrong with people.

These stories remind me of the time about 30 years ago when my brother and his wife wanted to go on a week long trip. He asked me if I would take care of their 3 year old daughter for that week. My brother said he was going to give me a great deal. Since I would be paying for my air fare to fly across the country, he would only charge me $300 to take care of his daughter. Yep, that’s right, he was going to charge me for the privilege of watching his daughter. You see, I would be staying in their home, using their car and probably even swim in their pool, so only playing $300 for the privilege was quite the deal. Now to my thinking, if I’m flying to their location and taking care of their daughter, I would need to stay in their home and use their car and shouldn’t have to pay for the privilege. He didn’t agree. Needless to say I turned this opportunity down.

0:29 I once had a friend call me up asking if I could come help them out by watching their kids for them one Saturday evening… They got REALLY defensive when I asked things like - “will you be there?” “Are you just needing help looking after them?” They pointed out that they had plans to go out and we’re having trouble finding someone they trusted to babysit So I played along “ahh, ok, I see I see, fair enough” “So could you come and look after them for me?” “Sure I guess I could, how much?” “…what…?” “How much are you going to give me for doing this for you?” “Pay you? I can’t afford to pay you anything? Why would I pay you? We’re friends…?” “I’m giving up what little time I have off work, in order to look after YOUR KIDS, while you decide rather than providing for them, you need to go out clubbing and drinking…? If you can’t afford to at least cover my fuel to get to and from your place and something basic like a pizza…then you can’t afford to go out…”

@BreezyStreamy
@BreezyStreamy 2 жыл бұрын
This exactly! TLDR I was working with someone who was pregnant a few months before I was, and she demanded that everyone tailor to her. She wanted the air on all the time in the spring where our clients would be shivering at night and she would berate me telling me to leave it on, to put on a coat if I was cold, and to give the clients some more blankets for me to wash in the morning at the end of my shift for her to bitch about folding later at her shift start. Once I lost my pregnancy and she knew what happened, she stopped talking to me because I was bringing negativity into her pregnancy. During my second to last shift there, I had a migraine and forgot to turn back on the air (for the empty house because she hated walking into a hot and stuffy house for her shift start) and she proceeded with cussing me out through a message about how I don't care about anyone else and how I needed to listen to her about the air (which, if it was an older system that would have gotten messed up from turning it on/off that would be one thing, but it was a new system.) I was like, "Dude, my last night is tonight and you don't have to worry about me forgetting the air when all you have to do is just turn it on and wait an hour for it to get cool." I came in (which it was my birthday) and she just got up and walked out without talking to me. Blocked me on social media some months later once I commented in a post about her about how she talks shit about anyone and everyone including her family, would make fun of people, and just was a horrible coworker.

I work from home(part time) and homeschool. I have ended many “friendships” because those friends always expect me to be their sitter. I have a full schedule and a routine. I used to try to help but now it’s just a hell no, I’m busy. I had one of my best friend offer to pay me $30/day to watch her newborn. This involved picking him up and taking him home. Minimum 10 hours per day, rotating schedule. She still owes me because she felt like it was ok to spend money on stupid stuff instead of paying me. We are no longer friends. The $30 barely covered gas

Yep, I stayed at my sister's place for a while and never left a dirty dish in the sink and whenever she went to the supermarket, I'd just hand her my debit card to pay for the groceries, I offered to go grocery shopping but she preferred to do it herself. I drove an 18 wheeler and was gone most of the time, I spent no more than a couple days per week there but still helped out around the house, like blowing leaves off the roof and other "grunt work" as well as maintenance for her car, I once noticed that she had tires on her car that were different sizes, (one size difference from front to back), asked her for her keys and took her car to the tire store so she'd have same size tires on her car, (new tires), those different sized tires were driving me nuts, didn't even tell her why I needed her car, (I have my own), she had an older TV set and one day while I was watching a movie and decided right then and there that she needed a new TV so headed over to Best Buy and got her a big ass Panasonic flat screen, when her microwave died I immediately headed to Best Buy again and got her a new microwave my sister and I are VERY close, always have been, I'm very protective of her. When my kids were daycare age, they went to a licensed home daycare. She was my neighbor growing up, I went to school with her sons and she also watched my younger sister, niece and nephew. She charged me $25 a day, that's the price she quoted, not what I asked to pay. But she also had other kids that she watched in her home all day and a few older kids that she only watched for a bit before and after school hours. I packed lunches, but she provided snacks, juice, milk and water. Pat-Pat was an angel, all the kids loved her and her husband (his nickname was "Old" 🤣). Unfortunately, her youngest son got cancer and they had to start traveling out of state a few times a week for treatment. This dear woman is so loved in our community that when her son passed, the whole town mourned. We still see her often, usually at the firehouse where she volunteers as her son had been a firefighter there and my husband is now the firehouse VP. She is always helping with food and toy drives. Fast forward 28 years and my husbands family told me how proud they were of me and what an amazing mother and wife I am. I had a full breakdown. It was such a confusing amount of different emotions. From Joy to heartache because why wasn't I good enough for my mom? At the same time it felt so good to hear those words from somebody else. Yes, before this my husband told me he was proud of me for many different reasons, but hearing it from an adult that was like a parent to me just hit different.

Aww I totally understand. My mother was the exact same way. People who don't have mother's like us who were neglectful and provided zero encouragement (I'm assuming your mother was the same) have no idea how traumatizing that can be to your mental health. I'm currently 36 years old and it took a lot of work to get my head right. In the only the past couple of years have I started feeling okay. Hang in there, it will get easier!

I babysit for free. My niece is 2 now but I have babysat her since she was 2 weeks old. Her first 18 months I had her 50% of the time, she has her own room in my house. Now I get her Friday through Sunday night. But, my BIL comes over and does any household repairs I need, my sis & BIL watch my 3 dogs & 2 cats whenever I travel, and I absolutely adore my niece. It may not be a 50/50 trade but I wouldn’t change it for a thing. I love getting to be involved in these young years of my niece’s development; watching her first sit up, crawl, walk, and now talk. She is a very loved and sweet little girl. And don’t tell my sister but she is better behaved with me than she is with her mama. Hehehe.

you remind me of my husband's aunt. she never had children, but she invested in him like he was her own. She was there for diaper changing, she was there for big moments, she invites him over just because she made his favorite dinner, she even did her own research on speech therapy when he was delayed as a child. And now she's basically part of the immediate family. They have a wonderful bond. (versus some friends of mine who don't want kids and tell me they can't wait until I do because they want to be the "cool aunt" ie. come over when the house is clean and the diapers are changed and get the kids all hyped and sugared up then leave when they want to go home and be child-free again)

I once was babysitting for a neighbor's kid at a discounted rate (lower than minimum wage) and she rarely paid on time or in full. I got fed up and let her know that I could no longer babysit for her. Then I see her post on a community forum looking for a babysitter and then complaining that she wishes someone would have compassion for single parents and babysit at a lower rate for her. I literally did that and she still wasn't paying me the very low rate I was charging.

Wow. That poor girl. There is a reason the dad left the house to her and not her mum. She definitely needs to see a lawyer. I hope she finds a way to evict them and then just keeps living in the house. I know that family is important but with toxic family like that sometimes it is better to just cut ties. Of course, she could just make them sign a formal lease agreement and charge them rent, then when they either break the rules of the lease or repeatedly fail to pay follow eviction processes that way. I do wonder how legally sound her dad leaving her the house was. Did her mum not have part ownership of the house? In which case the dad could likely leave her his share but not override the mum's part ownership, which would make evicting impossible.

Not sure the rules in England, but in the States, it's easier to kick people out if they don't pay rent. If they pay rent, they are tenants and have legal rights. Eviction can be a lengthy legal proceeding depending on local laws. If they don't pay rent they are guests and can simply be kicked out any time.

@@thoriated Actually, in any state, once a person has established residency in a home (i.e. receives mail there, changes the address information on their state issued ID, or even if the homeowner at one time said, where others heard it, Yeah, you can stay here) they must be legally evicted. If the unwanted resident has no written lease it's a bit easier, but still has to go through the courts. The absolute easiest way is to call the cops every time they do something threatening or illegal, establish a pattern of behavior that "makes you feel unsafe", then request a restraining order. Have the restraining order served by a law enforcement officer, who will then escort them off the property and advise them that they cannot return while the order is in effect. Once they're no longer in the house, it's a lot easier to keep them out than it is to try to dig out someone who is fully entrenched. Or, not entirely legal but still fun, send them all on a spa day/weekend holiday and, while they're gone, move their stuff out onto the side of the road and change the locks. #notlegaladvice

The purposefully eating someone else's food thing is actually a power move meant to assert dominance. My brother tried that crap all the time when we were kids. Until I started getting back at him, anyway. Anytime he brings up an argument with me now I remind him of the time he ate my birthday cake when I was sick one year. Usually shuts him up. It might sound petty, but food theft is often just an example of a larger pattern of bullying behavior. I'm not surprised that it was the thing that made OP snap. SIL could have picked up a phone and ordered something to eat or actually gone out and gotten her own dinner. Going through the effort of searching for and taking OP's food was by no means the only or even easier option. She had to have WAITED for OP to leave that dinner unattended to swoop in and eat that much in that amount of time.

Half of y'all don't even understand the new shit you are teaching as you are learning it along with your students and the other half are having issues understanding and being able to explain the new grading system y'all are using now. There is only a small percentage of teachers that actually do their jobs and with the dedication perceived in the media. Remote learning was literally phoning is school so y'all could be paid for the perception of doing work....I have 1 in each school level (high, middle and elementary) they all feel as if the last 2 years were just wasted time and they didn't actually learn anything. Y'all yourselves need to calm down, the effort, energy and actually learning going on in school has been declining rapidly over the last 10 years and y'all just blame the kids and parents. Not thinking anything bad, my wife started being nice to this neighbor only to find out later that the neighbor wanted free baby sitting. She would just let her kids knock on our door and enter and stay for hours without our permission or without even talking to us. She is unemployed and spends her time going out and exercising. Finally my wife had enough after her kids came to our house unannounced. My wife storm out and talk to the neighbor telling her to get her kids out of our house. After that, my wife blocked her number from our phone and refused to talk to her. I remember the 19 homeowner post from a while back, everyone was telling her to just evict her toxic family and not sell the home at a loss to her uncle because he was taking advantage of her too. Does anyone know the follow up on that story? If she kicked them out and/or sold the house? Edit: the post was from over a year ago, either before or towards the start of covid. The reason people didn't want her to sell to her uncle besides the loss on the house was that she would then be out of a house and would either need to buy a new house and deal with all that or start renting, and it would be a larger loss to her over time. Her SIL and mother are causing the problem, and her Uncle was using that to make a deal in his favor, getting the family home that he never got before.

People were getting SO aggressive and entitled, complaining about how they couldn't get through on the phone to enquire about a dog. "I tried to ring, but I couldn't get through! And now this dog's gone and I wanted him! Not fair!" The shelter would respond if they could (it was literally two volunteers vetting the calls while looking after the dogs/cats) and remind them that there were hundreds of other people calling at the same time and they were being absolutely bombarded with calls. There was also the odd parent going "I promised my daughter she could have this puppy, and now you're saying NO APPOINTMENTS AVAIBLE?! You just made my daughter cry and ruined her day! How dare you! How people expect free babysitters is beyond me, hell even just cheap it's like???!?!?! No?! Do they not realize how hard it is to handle children, how do they have these kids. And hey, I've even done a few odd jobs watching kids now for roughly 15-20$ an hour for my family/friends. The Lion, the Witch, and the audacity of that Bitch.

"do they not realize" I'd bet 10/hour that no, they dont. I doubt these people spend any quality time around their kids, since they expect total strangers to basically do all the work of parenting them (tutoring, cleaning etc) while theyre at work. I'm all for a high powered career and balancing work and home life, but these people are so out of touch....

I made $10/hour as a teen babysitting in 1988-1990. I was with those kids more than both their parents put together. I potty trained both of them because their halfassed parents couldn’t be bothered to do it. I broke both of them from their bottles, taught them their alphabet, numbers, beginning sight words, 911, how to do simple chores. I took them to church, fed them healthy food, and even had to take them in for their ped visit one time (as a 17 year old!). I had to miss starring in a high school play because those kids had no one else to take care of them. Looking back, those people got a helluva deal paying me that little. When I told them I was switching high schools and getting a job in the field I wanted to study in college so I wouldn’t be available ALL THE TIME to watch the kids, they cut me off from the kids entirely. That was so painful and the loss really affected me terribly. People suck.

About the birthday one. I did it once, told people I prefered they'd pay their kid's portion of the activity instead of bringing gifts (so basically the gift was for them to be there). We try to be minimalist with our gifts and prioritize activities and stuff like that instead of toys, because they already have so much. Most people were totally on board with the idea ^^

My reaction would be to apologise to the mum brother and SIL and say let me make it up to you with this spa weekend paid by me. Then while they’re on the spa weekend, pack up all their stuff into a storage warehouse with one month rent paid and change the locks on the house. The cost would be worth getting rid of them.

YES, a lot of parents think they're ENTITLE!! I work at Wal-Mart and I see parents let their kids make messes, and they'll leave their child in the toy section for hours while shopping. This isn't FREE DAYCARE service. Parents like to say "if you don't have kids then you don't know what is like" No I don't nor do I care, that's no excuse for letting your kids run wild and be disrespectful.

I raised my kids and know what it's like, but I never would have let them run free in a business or someone else's home, nor dump them on someone else. I can definitely relate the the house story. It’s been a decade ago so it doesn’t bother me as much anymore because I found the silver lining for my experience. When my husband and I were newlyweds, we lived with his parents due to our culture. and it worked out for the better because my husband had lost his job a few months after our wedding. I was getting paid $11/hr and was a PT college student. He was struggling to find a decent job because the job market wasn’t good in 2010. We help pay $200 rent. Considering their mortgage was within $700-$800. I figured we pitched in a fair amount, because his older brother and wife was paying for the utilities. Mind you, we plan to move out once he finds a job and save enough for down payment. Every month comes by and they keep having excuses for needing more money. I’ve given in a couple of times, but I had enough. We moved out in 1.5 years. Then came the jealous judgements from all the family members, “Watch them fail and move back”. Now, I’m happy that I heard it back then, because it motivated me to work even harder to prove them wrong. Low income means tight budget. Even when lived on our own, they still asked for money. Mind you, they make more than us. We took them in twice and didn’t ask for rent. Only asked for $200 one time because our utility bills we’re getting expensive. To make this shorter, they eventually moved out after I kept encouraging them to get pre approved for a loan and actually show them houses that were on sale. Then, they started saying that we were greedy. Blah blah blah. It hurt a lot a the time and I held it in for longer than I should. We were in our early 20s. Just because we couldn’t afford to pitch in when they asked for money or can’t afford to take them out to eat or offer to pay for some things for them, we were considered bad people. I wasn’t fully innocent either. I should’ve been better at communicating and consider some small things, but overall, I’ve learned to live truly to myself. It’s still a struggle, but it doesn’t affect me as much as I used to. Moral of the story, there are shitty people out there and sometimes they hit you hard on your blind spot, but don’t let that stop you for being who you want to be. Learn from it. You’re never a bad person as long as you had good intentions. Boundaries is key. If you read this far, well thank you.

I did. I have been a sucker but working on it. What I do now is keep reminding myself of the story of the Boy and the Rattlesnake. Boy rescues snake about to fall off a cliff when snake says "I won't bite". When snake inevitably bites anyway, boy exclaims "Why? I saved you, and you promised! Snake says "You knew I was a snake when you picked me up". I get really angry when I keep doing nice things yet get bitten in return. Those toxic people can keep their toxins, their venom, away from me because I am not getting bitten anymore. Ppl who truly need help, and animals of course (dogs and cats mostly, no snakes lol) I will do the right thing, but the snakes can slither away elsewhere.

I had an entitled parent at my work. I work in the cafeteria at an elementary school. We did grab and go meals for the kids when the kids weren't allowed to attend in person during the pandemic. Parents would come everyday and pick up meals for their kids or the kids would walk to the school. We had one parent that came and always made a comment about something. She would be like chicken again, really? Or why is it a turkey sandwich? This woman became pretty rude as the days went on and even at one point she said that we owe it to her to make these meals for her kids. We were like umm the meals are free for any kids that need it and we don't owe you shit. We were there for all the children and especially the children that needed the meals but this mom thought we should cater to her requests that we owed her these meals. It was sad to see a parent act the way she did. But all the other kind parents that came made up for it because we knew those parents truly needed these meals for their children and at the end of the day all that mattered to us was that the kids that needed meals got them.

My wife and daughter have both done child care with my wife being a certified nurse (so extra qualifications). They typically ask for around $16/hr which is cheap compared to an institutional day care for kids. The number of people who make counter offers of $20 per day or some such for a 9 hour day is staggering. Like you'd pay more to board your dog. People trying to cheap out with their kids and not value the cost of quality care.

@Alexandria Lukes But babysitters also give your kids way more 1-on-1 attention in the safety of your own home. No risk of getting illnesses or lice from other kids. No having to pick them up and drop them off during specific hours. A babysitter SHOULD cost more than a daycare. If parents aren’t willing or able to pay, that’s their own responsibility. I get that being a parent is hard and money can be tight, but screwing someone else over isn’t the solution. Kids are really expensive, and more people should plan for that before having them.

I let a struggling young couple move into my spare bedroom, only to find out that they had intentionally hid their pregnancy from me. They were shocked when I threw them out, after I found out. They thought that it was none of my business. I told them I never would have offered them housing if I'd known. Again they stress that it was none of my business. I explained that being tricked into living with someone else's newborn was definitely my business. They thought they could manipulate me into letting them stay. Nope. In the same place, I let another one of my friends move into my spare bedroom because her and her son were losing their housing. I told her I would never let her and her son become homeless, so she proceeded to move her, her kid and her unemployed boyfriend in. I did not invite the boyfriend to move in. Eventually she punched holes in my walls because I wouldn't let her borrow my car when I needed it. She destroyed a 5-year friendship with her entitlement. Yeah, I don't help people anymore.

My mum worked in an all boys secondary school (that would be a middle school in North America) and she had to deal with a parent who couldn’t be bothered to send her son with a packed lunch so my mum bought the kid a meal deal (it is school policy to not allow children who are overdraft to buy food at the cafeteria, make with that what you will), a parent wanted taxis booked by the school so their son could be taken to and from school everyday and a parent wanted their son’s uniform to be fully funded by the school (they’re not an impoverished family). Just some of the shit my mum had to put up with.
