I was so overwhelmed by this film when I was young back then. This is the first dark, dystopian, post-apocalyptic film I had ever seen. It seemed so groundbreaking for 81. I loved how Snake wasn’t a traditional hero and how he ended the film walking away, destroying the tape while smoking a cigarette.

One of the things i love about Kurt is that when they went to do the sequel 1996 the said they needed to get him fitted for a replica of his outfit from this one for the begin of the movie and his answer was that he still had it and he will make sure he fits it before they start filming

During it's theatrical release, theatre owners would have to hire additional security, some as many as 20 additions, because of all the violence (without giving away too much), the screenings would cause. The film was evenly pulled, and thus only had a very limited run because of that,

12:34 From what I remember prior to this movie, Kurt Russell played a lot of nice guy parts in mostly Disney films. This was his role that allowed him to break out of that.

Just about everyone in this has a legendary film career. Lee Van Cleef is a badass in westerns especially with Clint Eastwood. Cabbie is Ernest Borgnine an Oscar winner. You would probably like him in Poseidon Adventure. Adrienne Barbeau in The Fog. The president is Donald Pleasance who was in Halloween. You know Isaac Hayes. Brain is Harry Dean Stanton excellent in every thing he did. Fun to watch this old favorite with you!

Location Location Fact: The night street scenes were filmed in East St. Louis, Illinois, across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri. East St. Louis is filled with old, run-down buildings, and entire neighborhoods burned out during a massive fire in 1976. Practical Effects Fact: The wire-frame computer graphics on the display screens in the glider were not computer-generated. Computers capable of 3-D wire-frame imaging were too expensive at the time. Special effects designers built a model of the city, painted it black, attached bright white tape to the model buildings in an orderly grid, and moved a camera through the model city.

I saw this at the theater when I was 17 years old in 81 when it came out. Still one of my all time favorite movies. Kurt Russell was a Disney actor for years. So this was one of his first adult movies that made people recognize him as a more broad actor. After this, he could do anything.

Hey this is Pauly from Detroit. The Chock Full of Nuts girl was Kurt's wife. The president was the Doctor from the original Halloween. Brain was the convict they practiced on in the Green Mile. The Wrestler was Ox Baker an actual pro Wrestler. Enjoyed it. Always good for a laugh. Thank you.

I suspect the "scope" on the submachine gun was a low light scope, not a magnification scope, but undoubtedly it was just there to break up the lines of the generic weapon to make it more futuristic looking.

Y’all don’t realize just how important this film was for Kurt Russell’s career as an actor. He had been a child actor (his dad, Bing Russell, was a character actor who appeared in dozens of movies and television shows over the years, including THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (1960)) and had only recently begun starting to play more adult roles in the few years leading up to this film. Prior to this movie, in 1979, he had played Elvis Presley in a very widely seen and critically acclaimed TV movie on ABC called “Elvis,” which was directed by John Carpenter. That was the beginning of their creative partnership. But before that, with the exception of another TV movie in 1975 titled “The Deadly Tower,” where he played mass murderer Charles Whitman, a Marine veteran who had, in 1966, infamously stabbed his wife and mother before killing 15 people (including an infant) and wounding 31 others by shooting them from atop the Main building tower at the University of Texas in Austin before taking his own life, Russell was mainly famous for appearing in a number of very clean, family friendly Disney movies, both in supporting roles and as leads, and playing various boys and young men in guest roles on assorted TV shows like Gunsmoke and Hawaii Five-O. His very first movie role was in an Elvis movie, in fact! In the movie IT HAPPENED AT THE WORLD’S FAIR (1963), Kurt played a little boy who Elvis hires to kick him in the leg as part of a ruse. It’s hilarious!

A lot of people don't realize what a crime-ridden cesspool NYC had become when this movie was written. The 60s - 80s was a very rough time for the city. A lot of people didn't think it would ever come back. It didn't start getting turned around until the 90s.

1. Snake is in trouble throughout the entire movie. 2. A British President? 3. Manhattan is a very expensive real estate for a prison. 4. Everyone who says, "I heard you were dead" dies. 5. The eye patch is Russell's idea.😎 6. I loved, loved, loved Harry Dean Stanton😁😇 7. This was filmed entirely at night in an area of St Louis before it was refurbished. 8. The only reason to watch "Escape from LA" is to say you have. Besides doing this for a living.

I grew up in the 80s, my dad made us wait, outside for 40 minutes because the smoking section at a restaurant was full. My dad was not going to eat in a non-smoking section. I also remember people smoking at McDonald’s.

Not sure if anybody mentioned this already, but the fight scene with the spiked baseballs bats was done with a professional wrestler. He was very excited to get to beat up on a movie star. When Kurt Russell goes down on one knee, he wasn't acting. The wrestler was really taking it to him. They had to keep telling him to take it easy. If you ever seen professional wrestlers doing what they do, they make it look real.

When "The Thing" came out, my boyfriend at the time looked SO much like Kurt in that movie, only bigger & taller. Same hair, beard, eyes... It didn't work out in the long run & I'm glad...but I do have some fond memories. Yes, indeedy.🤗

One of my favorite movies! =) The guy Snake fights in the ring is a wrestler by the name of Ox Baker. From what I know he was mostly from the Territories days of wrestling such as WWWF, WWC, NWA and AWA, but he also did appearances in ROH in 2004 and CZW in 2007. There's also a sequel, Escape from L.A., also directed by Carpenter and starring Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, but sadly it's basically the same movie as the 1st one and it had some pretty bad cgi (this was in the 90's and cgi was pretty young at that time, the only movies that did cgi well in the 90's where Terminator 2 and Jurassic Park). A 3rd movie was planned called Escape from Earth, but it was cancelled when L.A. was a box office disappointment. A video game was planned too, but it never came off the ground, but I would love to see a video game adaptation made today! They're making a new Terminator, RoboCop and even a Killer Klowns From Outer Space game now, so why not?! Have Kurt Russell voicing Snake Plissken and have John Carpenter write the story and make the music, now that would be freaking awesome! =D

The city scenes were filmed in Kansas City. Part of the city was depopulated then because of a large fire. So there was also spotty electrical service for street lights and no real police presence. Not the safest place to be at night. There's a shot where Russell walks down a street and turns a corner. As it happened, he walked up on some people who just happened to be out at night. They took one look at him in his Snake kit, guns and all, and said "Hey, man. Just take it easy." Russell went back and told John Carpenter he thought the character was going to work well in the film.

I remember as a kid in the early 80s there were ashtrays in hospitals. As late as 2000 people could smoke at their desk at work. It seems so weird now but it is true.

Fun fact: the "computer" maps were created using a handmade model of the NYC skyline and reflective tape, by none other than James Cameron, who was just a visual effect artist at the time, a few years away from directing Terminator.

Brain is Harry Dean Stanton who's been i numerous films you may recognize mostly smaller parts and later on he primarily only did cameos He was in: Cool Hand Luke, The Godfather Part II, Alien, Red Dawn, Alpha Dog, Pretty in Pink, Stephen King's Christine, and The Green Mile, The Avengers ,Kelly's Heroes and down periscope. Ernest Borgnine as "Cabbie" played in shows like airwolf and McHale's Navy and a cameo in the movie remake.He was known as the original voice of Mermaid Man on SpongeBob SquarePants from 1999 until his death in 2012. He was in the wild Bunch, From here to Eternity , Bad Day at Black Rock,The Dirty Dozen,The Poseidon Adventure,All Dogs Go to Heaven 2, and Red with Bruce Willis and John Malkovich.

Given this movie was done in 1981, John Carpenter was reflecting what black culture was like back then. I mean people were walking with around with big ass getto blasters on their shoulders with the speakers aimed right at their own heads.

Kurt Russell was playing the part as Clint Eastwood would have played it. (John Carpenter Stated that he wrote the Charecter with Clint Eastood or Charles Bronson In Mind to play "Snake" Back in 1974.) later when Kurt Russell and John Carpenter teamed back up to make "Big Trouble In Little China" Russell played the part of Jack Burton the way John Wayne would have played it. He did a pretty good job in both movies.

RedLetterMedia have a great video about this movie. It was one of their first Re:View episodes. I really like that show: no gimmicks, no enduring bad movies, they just pick an older, usually more obscure movie and geek out over it. You can see their real love for movies on that show.

yeah that series is generally about whether something holds up to the test of time. actually almost anything that's been on Re:View is a good candidate for this show. there's probably some exceptions for the very weird stuff. like if it's a Jay/Josh episode. but Blank has great taste so any Rich Evans Re: View is probably ok. Ice Pirates for example, total CCC addition

There are so many iconic aspects of this film, but the shots of Snake in the plane particular stand out the most to me, cinematography wise. The red and green lighting, the shot composition.. Dean Cundey was the best collaborator John Carpenter ever had, without question.

It’s so crazy to think the same writers that did this did Halloween (1978) also. John Carpenter was next level in his craft. Nick Castle even played Myers in the original, if I remember correctly. And of course, Donald Pleasance once again chewing the mess out of every scene he’s in like the amazing actor he was.

"Why does everyone know him?" Carpenter decided to ax the original opening of the movie showing Snake and Fresno Bob robbing the Federal Reserve in KC. They actually got away with billions but when they arrived in San Francisco the authorities were waiting for them. Fresno Bob gets gunned down as Snake surrenders - this is what Snake was talking about when he confronts Brain about how he abandoned them. There was also a backstory about how Snake and his squad were sent on a mission by the military that was basically set up for all of them to die. Snake loses his eye and is the only survivor of the massacre - He realized the government set him and his squad up so he plots to rob the bank as revenge. Carpenter decided to axe all of it because he thought the mystery of everyone knowing him without the audience knowing why him made for a better story. The sequel Escape from LA is worth checking out as well. Basically the same movie but more 90s than 80s and the ending of Snake's story is GOAT.

T Carr, Snake was talking to Brain in the library about Kansas City being 4 years ago. What was Snake doing for those 4 years in the mean time? You'd think they would have sent him to New York a lot sooner than that. On top of this, Snake said to Brain, "You ran out on me. You left me sitting there...." meaning that Brain was probably a getaway driver who left Kansas City without him. If you'd seen the deleted footage like I have, you'd know that Snake already had an escape route planned for the Federal Reserve robbery. Snake took the train to San Francisco, and Brain running out on him and leaving him sitting there never happened during the Federal Reserve robbery. It must have happened roughly 4 years BEFORE the Federal Reserve. Also, the man that Snake was with during the Fed Res robbery was not named Fresno Bob, but instead his name was Taylor. Your prowrestling comment is spot on, because Snake is wearing something real close the the Bushwhackers ring gear from the old WWF days. Issac Hayes is and always will be a badass, if you ever come to Memphis, check out Stax Museum, they have his custom Cadillac Eldorado and that thing is fucking amazing.

I was just a kid then but smoking was everywhere. Go to the bowling alley and there would be a layer of smoke hanging in the air. Right around 89-90 I think is when smoking inside got banned where I live.

John Carpenter wrote all of his own music for his movies. Other movies he made with Kurt Russell Big Trouble in Little China and The Thing. Other JC movies Assualt on Precinct 13 The Fog Halloween Starman They Live and many more.

"I don't remember people smoking everywhere like this." Heck, I remember noticing around 20 years ago that it seemed like all the women smoked cigarettes. I couldn't stand them wanting to go outside to smoke, stop somewhere to get cigarettes. It was just in the last ten years or so that my town might have outlawed smoking in bars and clubs and maybe right outside of them but I haven't been in them since about 15 years ago. I look back and can't believe I put up with it just to hear some bands. By the way, that was neat seeing you on Popcorn in Bed's live stream.
