Like the S2, S3 and S4 class DMUs, the S6 was powered by one engine-powered compartment, an unmanned drive compartment, and two other passenger compartments. Accordingly, one DMU set consisted of 4 compartments. Its powered engine compartment was manufactured in Japan by the renowned HITACHI Company and manufactured locally in the passenger compartments and non-engine drive compartment. Most of its parts are made of wood.
The original color of these DMUs was red, and it is said to have been painted green and brown (as in the S5) in the late '70s.
10 locomotives of this type with diesel hydraulic transmission systems were deployed in the country and were initially powered by PAXMAN 12YXJL type power engines. Around 1990, these engines were removed and replaced with PAXMAN VEGA (SE / RP 160) power supply engines. With those repairs, the color of the DMU was changed to the current orange and silver.
These were very successful trains at the time, mostly for office trains. These DMUs have been operated on the Coastal Line , Kelani Valley Line ,Puttalam Line and , to Rambukkana from Main Line.
Over time, due to various technical faults and defects in the Under Frames, spare parts required for repairs, etc., this type of DMUs was phased out one by one and only DMU number 736 ( 2011) has been in operation for passenger transport services since. It is also often used for short distance runs and is often used on the Kelani Valley route.
Soon after these trains will be out of service, another golden chapter in the train conversation will come to an end, adding all S6 memories to the train's history.
