My favorite episode yet. This area needs more attention for kids to navigate in that middle school age.

What an excellent conversation. I would definitely agree with the experts that addressing social executive functioning and perspective, taking earlier rather than later is crucial. I struggle with a 17-year-old with ADHD, and when I explain to him how what he says or doesn’t do socially impacts family members I just think there’s a lack of empathy. He just doesn’t care. He knows that will be there for him no matter what because we’re family Unfortunately he may have given up in some regards to same age peers,. I believe this is because a lot of the social groups have already been formed. 45:35 It’s hard to talk to a 17-year-old about the cringe thoughts that he may be giving other people. He tends to say that I’m just being sensitive. The opposite is true. I’ve developed a very thick skin having a kiddo with ADHD. But I’m trying to prepare him for adult relationships in the workplace, and in the romantic realm.Definitely, a challenge.

Just keep in mind, even though he may disagree or argue, he's still hearing you. Keep doing what you're doing. :)

Holy crap! Where were you guys 10 years ago? My son is 22 (late dx ASD) and dtr is 26 (late dx ADHD, highly exploitable) and I made all the mistakes you talked about. I became a SpEd teacher to figure out how to guide both better as a single mom. You are absolutely right about skills groups, total waste of time. What do I do now? They're both still at home, but finally found jobs. Improving but shaky.

I think the question is how willing are they to help themselves and are you making their life easier for them by doing things for them they need to be doing on their own?

I have an only child with adhd and we live in a big city so I can’t just send him outside to play. We have a very active social life and he has a lot of play dates but sometimes I feel like Minecraft with friends online is the best way to gain social skills on your average weeknight. Any advice for me in my situation?

No one gains social skills through screen-based interactions. Nothing wrong with playing Minecraft, it is never a substitute for in-person social interactions. The way kids develop social skills naturally is through unstructured play and "hanging out" where adults are not hovering or directing things.
