Season 2, episode 11. Connor, Dominic, and Erica talk with legendary Academy Award and nine-time Emmy Award winning Star Trek Makeup Artist, Michael Westmore. Best known to us for his makeup on TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT and all of the TNG movies.
This is one of those episodes where while we were recording, we kept finding ourselves with our jaws on the floor because of all of the amazing achievements and relationships built over Mr. Westmore's career.
We discuss Michael's upbringing, his hollywood "makeup family", the history of makeup in Hollywood, and how he met Marion - his wife of now 58 years. Prosthetics. Glue. Writing his books. TV vs Film. The success of his children. And of course, Star Trek. Wash has a fan club. Matt, one of our Patreon Members and Live Event volunteers makes a candid appearance. Erica gets some fan questions in, Connor, Dominic, and Michael play for Patreon Member Jober Velasco in this week’s Star Trek Trivia, and Michael plays “Stuck on a Deserted Island with Connor Trinneer.” It's another awesome conversation and another opportunity to see more of what our Patreon members get in these full length episodes. Mix a mimosa and join us for another good time.
Michael Westmore's book "Makeup Man" is available on Amazon.
The full, complete version of this conversation is available to our amazing Patreon Members.

I was so excited to see Mr Westmore on the podcast! Some of my prize possessions are makeup test photos from his work on DS9! As a very sick home schooled child I was given a care package of personalized effects from the makeup and hair department by the brother of my teacher who worked with Mr Westmore! It made my very depressing 14 yr old day! Hes a legend and a wonderfully kind man!

I didn't believe I would like a show without a Trek star on it, but the interviews with directors, makeup, and other behind-the-camera people are so educational! It's helping my deep dive into all things Trek.

So watching the Star Trek shows, the finished product is absolutely wonderful. In this episode what really struck me was the myriad relationships of all the artists, technicians, and other film professionals with the actors and how their work made the show come to life. Seeing and hearing Michael, Connor, and Dominic speak with each other you get a glimpse of the closeness that comes from working together. This is a beautiful revelation of what goes on behind the scenes in support of getting the actors ready to bring the show to life. I had never really thought or considered what that must be like. But hearing the admiration and love in their interview while speaking of working together and what went into creating the characters for the show opened a whole new door of understanding and respect for me. Thank you for this show and this episode.

Mr. Westmore's contribution to Star Trek is appreciated. I wish the new MAs would not continually try to re-invent the established alien looks he developed.

Agreed. I think there's definitely room for some modifications. The same make up design from the 60s, 90s, and 00s probably wouldnt transfer well to high def but I don't know why the wheel needs to be completely reinvented all the time. The ferengi in disco are bad but those Klingons. Wow. What a mistake. Edit: the Borg are a great example of improvement.

I know! He really did beautiful work. It's one thing to improve where certain materials & techniques were available. But, if there are so many fans who love the universe, why would you distort it?
@langleymneely
@langleymneely Жыл бұрын
@@gohawks3571 You are hitting on the formula of retconning Trek: does changing this thing make things BETTER or are you simply trying to make a name or impact outside of helping or enhancing the universe? Westmore was brilliant at honoring what came before but innovating and pushing things forward.

Moms Mabley was a female black comedian who would come out on stage wearing a dumpy dress & carrying a shopping bag and she looked like she was 900 years old. She had a gravelly voice & would talk about men, white people and was very very funny and like Red Foxx & others she would do records with what was called blue material back then ( sexual words, swearing ). I got to see her at KPIX Channel 5 in San Francisco when she was on People Are Talking and like Redd Foxx and Rip Taylor, the audience was roaring in laughter.

Great to see MW in the pod. I interviewed him for my blog in about 2005 and when I met him in person 4 years later (at an event we were both attending) he remembered meeting me and that I was in the UK at the time. He invited me to come to his studio in Burbank (or it might have been Toluca Lake) to hang out. Please tell him I said hello and pass along my best wishes for MacKenzie.

Connor, Dom and Erica - congrats on another fabulous episode! Michael was a wonderful guest, what a great get for The Pod. Really enjoyed how detailed and varied his stories were, and not just the Trek ones. I could listen to a whole another episode of his experiences! All the glitz and glamour of the biz sure didn't detract from how easy going and humble Michael is. I was surprised to hear he didn't plan on settling into the family business in the beginning but to be fair, he did have good reason. I would've jumped at the chance myself, doesn't seem like there's ever a dull moment in that line of work, that's for sure. The fact he had such a hand in creating so many recognizable and iconic Trek looks is astounding but not surprising. It's all very well done and the quality is apparent in everything in he had a hand in, no matter what Trek you're watching. Glad to see Wash is still doing well, he's working very hard to get those new leaves! (I still need to get a Wash t-shirt of my own already!) We're all rooting for you buddy! (Pun absolutely intended by the way.) As always I can't wait to see what next week has in store! Happy Shuttlepod Sunday, one and all! 😊🍃🖖💚

As a film/TV/Broadway/opera wardrobe person, I especially enjoyed this episode, but even if I didn't have any point of reference careerwise with Mr. Westmore, I could have listened to his candid tales for hours. As stated at the beginning, he's a bona fide Hollywood legend and an incredible artist/craftsman. That he considers himself "an employee" speaks to his professionalism and down-to-earthness even with the Westmore "royal family" pedigree and his own astounding resume.

Despite my covid headache, I can tell you I liked the episode. But I'll watch it again. I hope Dominic wasn't serious about the facelift.
