Grand Adventure

Күн бұрын

After running all the way from Colorado to escape the crowds, we find ourselves in the tiny southeastern Montana ranching town of Bridger. While we stay cool on cost-effective hookups in their lovely town park we knock Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument off our bucket list to see the site of Custer's Last Stand, check out the kayaking potential of Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area, and learn more about the Crow Nation and one of its charismatic leaders at Chief Plenty Coups State Park, and in the nearby Pryor Mountains.

ABOUT US
Welcome to Grand Adventure, a KZfaq channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah during the winter months, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so while you'll occasionally find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. We've now transitioned from "long-timing" for six months a year, to living and traveling in our RV full-time.
We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

Funny that you say that, for I've just spent this evening exploring some of the history on the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation. Happy and free, though, may be a stretch as many (especially the Sioux) spent centuries stealing other tribes' land, capturing/kidnapping and enslaving members of other tribes, etc. That's why the Crow fought alongside Custer's men at Little Bighorn.

Another great travelogue video of some locations that are a bit off the beaten path, especially the Little Big Horn National Monument and Bridger. You do a wonderful job describing the history of the locations you visit. Keep it up! I first saw the Little Big Horn battlefield in 1969 and only much later did I fully come to understand the Native American experience from their point of view. Have to admit many of the places you feature are places I've tended to blow through on the way to somewhere else. I got to learn to slow down and take in the history more. Thanks for reminding me of that! Edit: Why isn't the Travel Channel people calling you!? And bring on the Bear Tooth!

When Custer arrived at the Little Big Horn from North Dakota, he sent out two scouts. They came back an hour or so later. "We have some good news, and some bad news for you, General." " What's the bad news?" " It looks like every Indian in the world is right over that hill in warpaint. " " What's the good news?" "I don't think we are going back to North Dakota!"

@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure 2 жыл бұрын
Montana is a gorgeous state, and so topographically diverse. When you go to Glacier, just remember to not make the same mistake most RV travelers make, which is the same mistake that they make in Wyoming and Utah, too. They focus on the marquee destination (Glacier in Montana, Yellowstone/Grand Teton in Wyoming, the Mighty Five National parks in Utah) and just drive through the rest of the state to get there. Meanwhile there's a "whole rest of the state" that they miss, or don't take the time to explore -- and which often contains sights that are the equal or sometimes even exceed those of the destination that they're so focused on reaching, and are typically far less crowded, too.
@ExtremeRVing

@@GrandAdventure Amen to this, it's the very reason we started our motto #leaveordinarybehind We stayed a summer in Niagara Falls, NY and saw all the things AROUND the Falls. We were amazed at how many people would drive through 5 states to come there, stay three days, and just leave after seeing the Falls. Great tips about viewing all the OTHER things a state has to offer, we agree 100%

What a great video! Am planning our trip thru this area next summer and you have given me some great info. Can you remember where it was exactly that you saw the wind turbines in this video. Dwight loves to see them and get up close views of them.

To be honest I don't recall exactly where those turbines were. However, you are going to find a ton in eastern Montana. You'll have no trouble getting up close and personal.

Marc, If you paddle the Bighorn Canyon , put in at Horseshoe Bend on the Wyoming side. Plenty of camping there with potable water and dump station, and it's right at the mouth of the canyon. From there you could paddle all the way through the canyon to Barrys Landing. ( Long day of paddling ) You can also opt for the guided boat tour. However, in years of serious drought I have seen the water at Horseshoe Bend dried up until there was only mud there. In which case you have to camp at Barrys Landing. Late spring is the best time to go, at least that's when I liked it most. The Bighorn Canyon was always one of my favorite places to go. Loved taking pictures of the wild Mustangs and Bighorn Sheep. www.nps.gov/bica/planyourvisit/upload/Waterway-Trail-Guide.pdf

@@GrandAdventure We've been to both sides ( The Fort Smith, Montana side , and the Wyoming Side near Lovell, WY ). I prefer to start at the Wyoming side because you see a lot more. Driving through you will see Wild Mustang Horses and Wild Bighorn Sheep. And the canyon itself is absolutely breathtaking!

Noticed you skipped over why the Lakota left their reservations. It was because of the slaughter of the Buffalo that had taken place. Plus it was the only time waring tribes worker together against the settlers.

Going to Pryor Gap into the Pryor mountains on the Crow Indian Reservation you know you're trespassing right or did you ask the landowners if it was okay to be on their land I am a Crow Indian from the crow reservation
@GrandAdventure
@GrandAdventure Жыл бұрын
Lance, trespass requires a knowing intent to violate someone's property rights: law.justia.com/codes/montana/2017/title-45/chapter-6/part-2/section-45-6-203/ We found Prior Gap Road while poring over USGS topographic maps. There were no signs posting the land, and had there been any we would have respected them, just as we did when we found tribal postings on Grapevine Road heading west out of Fort Smith.

I have been looking at this area and was wondering where to camp. I saw this place on The Dyrt and was wondering ii it was a good spot. Thanks for the heads up. You were wise to bail on Colorado. It's way over crowded and over hyped. Everyone should go to Utah instead.

Is there any hope for heat to fade? On july 20th. I have a decision to make of high tailing it back to florida from colorado or to go back to utah. It sucks to no end being so close and only doing half the itinerary due to weather. Having offroaded out the wazoo i planned to boomerang back to wedge, goblin valley, capitol reef, escalante, bryce, page and kanab and Grand Canyon. But if it stays hot as hell… no way can i hike those spots. Grrr

It's definitely frustrating us as well this season, MTL. These temps are crazy. While we were in Bridger the normal highs are in the upper 70s to around 80, so they're running about 20 degrees above normal. That high pressure ridge over the West Coast needs to break down.
