It seems fitting that episode 24 should feature a 24" bass drum. In this video we dive into the world of large bass drums- tuning, muffling, and playing. The approach to experimenting with sounds and achieving a desirable sound is similar to our previous videos but you'll notice that changes need to be made based on the size and depth of the drum.
The bass drum used in this video is a 24x14" GMS drum that Cody recently purchased along with matching 13 and 16" toms. Congrats to Cody on the new drums!

I've always believed that 14" is the magic depth for bass drums, irrespective of diameter. Great series, guys.

You read my mind Chip.. I just posted about Tony's bass drum on here.. I play a 20 x 18" now and I have a handsaw lol.. Eventually I would love to try a 26 x 14" with a VF vintage lamb's wool beater.. It would put the bass drum much more in the roll of pulse and flow similar to the early days but not as obvious.. difficult to explain.. and yes this is a 'great series'.

Yes. Yes yes yes. Going from a 22x18 to a 22x14 was magical. Soooooo much more focused, and yet still nice and big sounding.

@@BlackHawk2029 I had noticed that bass drums were getting longer and longer over the years and I could not understand why.. Ginger Baker was my 'hero' back in the day.. check out this quote I found... "From 1966 to 1968, Ginger played a Ludwig Silver Sparkle: 20"x 11" Bass (right foot) 22"x 11" Bass (left foot)(from Ginger's website) I always thought they were 12"

@@bacobill yes, a lot of them are really deep now. And it makes them hard to get a punchy sound out of. That 22x18 I have is really mushy tuned normally. To get enough punch out of it I had to tune the batter head crazy low to kill it and get some slap from it, then raise the pitch of the resolution head to get a little boom.
@bacobill

@@BlackHawk2029 I have my 20 x 18 tuned the same as you for the same reasons.. I can't remember where I saw it on KZfaq but it was a company that makes big bass drums and they compared a 22,24,26" x 14"(?).. Surprisingly less difference than I thought when they played one after another.. I wonder if the narrower shell had something to do with that?

My first and only bass drum is a 24x14. When I bought it I didn't know anything about it, I just wanted a big drum because of the looks and to have something that not everyone has. Years later, I don't regret it at all!! I've played on other drum kits, and my 24" is still my favorite. What a sound! And the playing feel is amazing.

I played a 24 inch diameter double ported bass drum (I think it was an 80's tama, a friend refurbished it) for a number of years and I really liked it. Recently I bought the Ludwig Centennial Zep set and even though it isn't 3 ply reinforced like the sixties models and it wasn't even made in america, the sound is just phenomenal. The 26 x 14 is just a great sounding drum.

Thank you for creating this channel. I've watched all the videos from the beginning and have gotten so much from each one. As far as my favorite tuning in this video, it is the final one. I love the tone coming through. The drum sounds so much fuller. This happens to be my tuning preference. I've tried tuning down as in the first seeing and never really liked it. To me it sounds like a dead " splat" with no life. I wish you much success. Please continue forward for as long as possible.

I played a 1967 14 x 22” Ludwig Super Classic for years when I first got started. I knew it as a pancake drum because of the 14” depth. I played a lot of rock stuff on it and love the tone I could get from it at a medium tuning. Full and punchy without a tone of overtones building up. This was especially true when I started using single ply EMAD heads with an EQ3 reso. That was my sound for GB, blues, Broadway show gig, you name it. I play an 18” now, still have that kit and dig it out now and then when I want to really punch it up.

Another great episode - I have just parted company with a 24x18 super thin maple shell that I could never get quite to my liking. Didn't ever dial in the huge sound I get from my 70's Ludwig Superclassic which is a 22x14. One of the most surprising bass drum sounds I have heard/felt recently came from Ludwig Porto kit with a 22x12 BD. I always believed the more wood the bigger sound, but that went out of the window after playing the shallower kicks!

I’ve been utilizing a 22 for years and just acquired a converted Pearl 26x14 Marching bass drum. I’ve been a low tune batter to higher tuned reso. I’m loving how bigger drums sound with a bit more resonance. I’m so excited to have a rock sized kick. Wish mine was maple but I’m equally pleased that it’s mahogany and will still get a great warm and punchy sound from it.

Another home run. Gotta get some new heads for my 24"*17.5" Sonor S Classix and tune it way up. I recently moved it from my practice space (a really small room) to a way bigger rehearsal space, and every drum now sounds like crap =) I believe it is because in the smaller, more cramped room, the "throw" of the drums came through as stronger, but in the bigger room it's not enough. Time to tune everything up! Thanks for the inspirational content on your channel, every time you post something new, I'm excited!

I love the channel, keep it up. I went from a 26x14 1970's-era Vistalite to a 24x18 DW Performance last year. I was worried the deeper drum wouldn't be playable, but I haven't found the extra 4 inches to present any problems as long as I use a ported front head. But an unported front head on the 26 was also hard to play because of the slap back. As a unexpected bonus, I've found I like that my beaters are closer to the center of the head on the 24.

I just bought a used-but-like-new Catalina Club shell pack with a 24x14. Put an EMAD with the small ring on the batter and an EQ3 on the reso side. Tuned both just a little more than a 1/4 turn up from finger tight (no wrinkles), and put nothing in it. I know the thing is an intermediate, Taiwan-made drum, but with the thin mahogany shell and 30 degree bearing edges, this kick sounds deliciously MASSIVE. 😁 I can actually hear the air being moved through the drum and FEEL the low end resonance. It's like a ginormous sub. I'm in love with this cheap girl!!! 😍

Try a coated white on the batter side (Remo Powerstroke P4 / Clear Reso side) or Evans aqual, with same above wrinkle tuning. Wow! I have a Ludwig Keystone 14x24 and it is amazing with this head combo. I had the emad series head on before and while it sounded great, nothing beats this combo that I have found. Maybe the stars were just lined up for me that day. Good luck!

Can only agree with everyone else, the best chanel out there. No drumming Olympics, just a passion for great sound. My bass drum tuning (just to add to the debate!) is EQ3 front and back, no muffling at all, medium tuning both ends and playing off the head always. Maximum tone, huge sound. It's tricky to control to start with, but so worth the effort. My bedding stays on my bed, not in my drum!

24x14 rules! My 1978 Pearl luan shell sounds amazing! Emperor and Ambassador. 5-inch port. Felt strips on both heads. And a Pearl bd muffling pad just touching the reso head. Reso higher. Tuned to a 1G. Ahh... Punch, tone, girth. This video got me experimenting last year. Thanks, SLAD! Even with the cheap luan shells it sounds Bonham-esque with a 6.5 Supraphonic! I could hear the Zeppelin sound, but could tell it wasn't a 26. It was only the girth factor. That's it. My tuning sounds great with or without mics at the clubs. With a mic is especially beautiful and well complimented on by the sound guys. I love this channel! Inspirational at best and thought provoking at the least. Rock. On.

I am amazed by your videos, especially the impact of stuff on the floor Tom legs. No more hanging the stick bag there! I started on a 14x20 Ludwig in the early 60’s, but a few years later went to 2 14x28’s. I loved the big thunder especially for soloing, but switched to a Gretsch kit in the mid 80’s. The toms and snare were all quite large with a kick 14x26”. This kit sounded massive but not for subtle playing. Transporting either of those kits was a major undertaking, not to mention the case costs. Finally, a few years ago went to a tidy Garcia kit with a 14x20. Garcia is a Seattle based custom drum builder and these are fantastic drums. I have just ordered a complete set of Earthtone calf heads but I am still waiting for delivery. Getting anxious to try them out. DK

Glad to see the support in the comments for large bass drums! I always joke that any bass drum smaller than 24 is a tom. Like the man says, you can always back off but you cannot add. They just feel better to play and give you the feedback you need to adjust in a band setting. I feel smaller diameters make you much more reliant on sound reinforcement... Nice video. I just subscribed...

Cody & Ben have done it again! This reminds me: I never gave bigger kick drums much thought until I saw Kenny Aronoff's "home" studio tour and Sunset Sound rig on Warren Huart's channel in which he was using a 26 inch bass drum with a center-cut ported reso. Hey, thanks for great content. My experience with 24" kick is that they tend to get a bit plastic-sounding when just above wrinkles, so it helps giving them quarter turn on batter to eliminate this. Also, I never use the drum - fingers only - maybe the back end of TAMA key to save my fingers a bit and I always get the best results.

The room has a MAJOR effect on the bass drum. Just shifting my bass drum 6” and rotating it a few degrees will give me a drastically different sound. Different parts of the room reinforce certain frequencies. Luckily in a 8’ x 8’ or even up to a 15’ x 15’ in my experience will have a heavy effect on the region the bass drum resides in. In my 8’ x 8’ practice room I had one spot where the bass drum sounded MASSIVE. Move it to the other side of the room and I felt like I was robbed. As a celebration for getting a new drum set I’m remodeling the room with a new floor and paint job and a few wall treatment pieces so hopefully I can strike a balance between MASSIVE sound and a controlled effect on the higher frequencies. Keep up the great videos guys!!

I love 14x24s! Grew up worshipping Buddy Rich (he used 14x24 in the 60s and 70s), and if it was good enough for him, it was good enough for me. (Yeah, right!) You've definitely given me something to play with regarding tuning - without a pillow, my Slingerland 14x24 rings like crazy with Evans batters and Remo Pinstripe resonants. Going to go try loosening the batter to JAW and tightening the reso. :-) Thanks!

I have Truth kit and the kick is 24x18". I usually throw a pillow in it to deaden it and just get this big punch but like you mentioned it is so big there is still a lot of resonance. The last tuning you had where the shell started to resonate is more of how I have it. I use Remo Powerstroke 3 batter and the resonant is the stock Truth textured head. Sounds so massive.

Excellent video overview! Bass drum size/setup/head selection and tuning are probably among THE most important and least logically discussed subjects, particularly when compared to snare drums, and especially when you consider that you're playing bass and snare + some kind of cymbal 80+% of the time in most genres of music!! Todays 'music' is so digitally altered that you may not even be listening to the REAL drum sound anymore. My humble thoughts on the subject: I own / play 20", 22", and 24" bass drums. My favorite by far for over 25 years is the 24". Pain in the buttocks to carry, but they have what can only be described as AUTHORITY. My head choices are an Aquarian Superkick II batter, and any brand resonant head with a built in muffling ring, like you used for your batter head in the video. No other muffling, btw. Both heads are medium tight, w/ the resonant head being tighter than the batter. Bonzo employed a similar strategy, and it definitely gives you a massive low-end thud that resonates the whole shell and gives the drum enormous presence and projection that you feel in your gut and that also fills the room, even unmiked, from the audience perspective.

The best sound to my ear was the first playing, before the EQ pad went in. (5:00) I have a Ludwig Classic Maple 12-16-18-26. The 26 I outfitted a EQ4 coated batter and an EQ1 reso, nothing inside, which was surprising, and no port either. Sounds like Bonham, for sure! I like the 12 as a high tom vs. a 14, the drums sound great with G12 coated batters and Reso7 resos.

“Satisfying” is a perfect description of a 24x14, and I agree wholeheartedly with the idea of full dedication to big sound. I love my 18” and 20” bass drums (not really into 22”‘s - not tight like a 20, not huge like a 24) but when you need that huge sound, 13/16/24 is the recipe. I’m lucky to have a Club Date (USA) kit in 13/16/24 and it always makes me happy. Vintage A’s on the toms sound gigundous and literally feeling the bass drum in your chest is just awesome. It’s like hopping on a biga** motorcycle - it’s just bwwwaaaaah and a big smile, nothing like it. Is it the best bike for all roads? Nah. But who cares? Sometimes you need a biga** bike.

Great video! I love 14X24 bass drums but wait till you try 14X26!! Both my 24 and 26 have a P3 batter with a Renaissance Emperor on the resonant side with no muffling. Beautiful tone and just enough ring. I am considering having a 12X24 built as well. Just to see how it sounds.

Liked the higher tuning at the end with more resonance, it definitely lost that papery quality and felt like I was hearing more of the drum tone rather than the slap back of the room. Thanks for doing all of these, they're really fun to watch.

I have a 24 inch bass drum, and I am working on double bass speed and endurance. Two things that I’ve held me back are the resonant had not having a porthole, what ends up happening is that it just keeps everything vibrating including the battery head. Secondly, air on the side of tuning the batter head tighter. This helps with control and also bounce back, and the head doesn’t keep vibrating which will impede any additional strokes. Think of a longer bass drum diameter in the same way you would think of a string that is longer you may have to tighten it more to get it the same pitch as a shorter string.

I love the point you make about deep kicks. I once played a 16x20" with a single ply head that felt more sluggish than my 14x24" with a Power Stroke. I noticed how 14" deep kicks are more responsive. Even my buddies' 14x26" Radio King felt more alive than the deep 20" I played. I read that that Earl Harvin plays a 12x20" kick and I've always wanted to try one that size. Jimmy Chamberlin made a point recently in a recent Yamaha video about how he likes the 14" deep kick better.

Super-deep bass drums, regardless of diameter, are muddier and less articulate than shallower bass drums. Also, as Cody stated correctly in the video, super-deep bass drums are also slower to respond due to the physics of the air column travel time being longer.

Pretty sure Ginger Baker used 20x12 on his last kit at least. I really liked a 22x12 but i think the 22x14 or 16 was a better size for me personally but anything deeper is not my thing. My father has a 22x18 and it sounds really good and plays quite nicely.

Very interesting video! Big thumbs up! For the last couple of years I use Sonor Scandinavian birch bass drum 20x17,5. It is really versatile drum: from jazz to metal. Really enjoy it (both construction, tuning abilities and punchy sound) but recently I have ordered custom made 100% mahogany 26x14 bass drum because I want deeper, mellower sound with quicker air/resonate response.Generally, after years of drumming, I prefer bigger drums (and cymbals) because I think they are more multi-purpose than small sized drums and their tuning rage is wider and they sound big. I don't see any serious benefits of small sized drums except easier carrying.

If you are ever looking for seriously high end hand crafted custom drums that are actually more affordable than other custom work (believe it or not), you have to look at Outlaw Drums. Amazing, beautiful, and completely hand built. Most of the wood is reclaimed lumber from old barns and houses that are falling down and the wood can date back 300 years! You have to check it out! I picked up a vintage beverley kit last year for about £300, they use to be made by premier drums back in the 60/70's. 24x14 mahogany kick combined with the toms from my stage custom! Sounds massive! The Beverley's have been said to match the tone of the ludwigs from back in the day.. not sure how accurate that is but they sound sweet.. Edit : Not made but bought out by Premier.

Just started using an Evans UV Emad batter and an Aquarian regulator reso. I've been able to get a great low end punch/tone with that combo. The removable dampening rings that comes with the Emad is also great for switching up the sound quickly. Great stuff!

I started with a 24x18, which wasn’t too bad (I still play it, and it’s pretty heavily modified to have TONS of attack and the 18” depth gives it the low-end balance it needs), but my newest kit has a 24x14, and it’s PERFECT right out of the box! All I did to mine was put a half pillow on the batter side, vented the resonant head, and put a heavy duty kick pad on the batter, and it sounds incredible! I’m also a heavy-footed drummer, and I play with DW beaters (on a set of SpeedCobras), so this kick has a TON of attack and projection! It’s hard to go back to a 22, cuz it just doesn’t have quite the same characteristics of a 24 that I love. I also play in a loud metal band with 4 cabs on stage for live shows, so that 24 holds up super well in that live mix! :) Anyway, sorry for the long post; I’m a little giddy about seeing you cover this, given that I prefer bigger kick Drums! Love the channel! Keep up the great work!

24x18 birch tama starclassic here. I've used it with many head combinations. PS3/PS3, PS3/Ambassador(unported), CS white/Ambassador(unported), PS3 coated/Ambassador ported. Some aquarians even, the list goes on. It's really a powerfull drum which feels the venue, but honestly i dont think i would miss 4 inches in depth... 24x14 sounds awesome.

I have played a 24" x 14" for more years than I care to remember. I grew up playing a 20" x14". I currently am using a 22" x 18" and would trade it for either of the above. The 22" has one sound. I would rather do a light jazz gig with the 24" than the 22".

I absolutely love my 24” kicks! I tend to go with an emad batter eq3 smooth or coated reso and an evans pillow more against the reso side and they sound HUUUUUGE then. :-) Kelly shu with an internal d6 or something and you’re well away! 👊🏻☺️👍🙏

Hey Ben & Cody, I really liked the slight changes that brought the EQ pad with the tunning at the beginning. On my end, I am using a 22" x 17,5" Sonor Ascent bass drum, made of Beech. I've been using it for now 2 months and I really like how the wood reacts to the different tunnings I tried. I am using the exact same heads as the one you showed, I just added a bit more into the bass drum than the EQ pad because I didn't take much time to properly check the tuning and experiment with it so far. Take care guys and keep it up, I really enjoy the small tips that you are giving us !

I was wondering when youse were going to go the other way in your bass drum videos. Great work! I had a 24 for a while and tuned it for maximum boom. It just resonated for days. I learned quickly however that sound engineers in studios as well as live hated that size because it was hard to EQ all that boom. Many told me a 20” was best as they can always add boom easier than they can EQ it out. Not only all this, but traveling with a monster like that gets old real quick. That drum became my home studio queen and I gig with a 20”. Much easier to say the least.;-)

Hahah, yeah man absolutely - I had a great conversation with the FOH engineer post-gig last weekend after using this drum in a larger club and he was actually savvy enough about drums to mention that he really dug large bass drums as long as they were shallow! He dug this drum but definitely hated when people rolled in with 18 or 20" deep kicks - there was nothing he could do but gate them and hope for the best :) - Cody

Definitely like a more shallow kick! TBH my favorite size kick is a 20, but I'm rapidly falling for 18s. My go to tuning on all sizes is a JAW beater side and a fairly cranked reso with as little muffling as I can get away with. Granted, I'm generally the engineer as no decent musician would want my drumming on an album or on stage, so my perspective is definitely skewed mic-centric. A good sounding room also seems to have more impact on the sound than tuning minutiae. Though that never stops me from fiddling. Loved this series! Maybe snare depth/sizes/materials in a similar fashion next?

My friend used to have a 24x16 bass drum with a very thin shell (didn't have a nameplate, but it was most likely UK made). It had a huge problem with overtones. Even with damped heads. The real problem was that if we put some pillows in, it was too much for the heads, but too little for the overtones. One older studio guy then recommended to use something heavy to damping the shell. It worked great. We just threw a dvd-box sized piece of asphalt mat (dunno the official translation, but it's that heavy black mat -thingie they use to f.e. dampen the cars for hifi) in and it was great. Actually it just removed the lower mid resonances and overtones, but it seem like the whole bass drum was ringing a whole octave lower. Plus we get to keep the heads free for attack and resonance.

lower batter tuning without muffling inside and higher resonate tuning is my favorite 24" sound. allows it to resonate and have punch.
