@@user-wl4qs8xl3r it kind of was! I rewatched this very carefully. You can’t even *SEE* the dead baby at any point. I kept trying to figure out (on the first watching) which bird they were starving and j got to the end wondering what I missed. I appreciated your post telling us when to look for it, but this chick either hatched much later than the rest of the clutch or hatched and had failure to thrive. The size and colour and lack of pin feathers as well as how undeveloped certain features were show us that the baby was not alive for long after hatching. I don’t think the parents did this deliberately. They will if there is something wrong with the chick. There are many types of birds that selectively cull babies in their clutch. They do it based on how strong each baby is. They will let the siblings kill or push the weakest clutch member out of the nest, or the parent will kill it by dropping it, killing it and in some species they consume it and feed it to the rest of the clutch. Parasitic species like the cuckoo are genetically enormous compared to the actual babies in the clutch. When the host parents (who are truly not the brightest stars in the sky for not recognising how enormous and different their chick is compared to their real chicks; not to mention how voraciously hungry it is because of its growth rate and relative size, they can exhaust their adoptive parents begging to feed, even as they outgrow the nest and in most cases becoming bigger than their adoptive parents, even before they fledge!) leave to hunt and forage for their chicks, the instinct of the cuckoo chick kicks in and they turn around and use their back, wings and legs to brace themselves and push the rest of the clutch out of the nest - all before the chick is developed enough to _open its eyes_ . But this just looked like normal, attentive parents, who had one member of the clutch fail to thrive. Look at all those greedy little munchkins in the nest, stretching tall, screeching and begging for food. Mom and dad can’t get there often enough or fast enough to satiate them. The parents put food in and out, not only testing if that particular baby can take/swallow what they’ve caught, but by pushing their food and beaks down their throat, they can determine just how full the baby’s crop is, to make sure that each baby is fed enough. That’s why dad/mom keeps taking it in and out and pushing so much. They’re ensuring all are fed and no one has a crop too full or too empty when feeding because the babies will beg and eat regardless of how full their crop is. It’s instinctual. Notice how carefully they remove all the poop each baby leaves. I just couldn’t see that fifth baby in any shot and am confused that the parents are so fastidious about feeding and removing droppings but don’t try and remove/feed/care/dispose of that tiny dead bird? All in all, the title is rubbish and it’s hard to spot what you’re looking for unless you see a post by someone pointing it out. It was very misleading. What always gets me is how much their neck stretches up and how they can have the strength to hold up those proportionally huge and heavy heads and beg for food 😂😂

@@dynamicdave2647 It starved to death. Because it was so much smaller than its siblings, they seldom fed it. It was smaller because it was born a couple of days later than its siblings and its siblings were already at least twice its size when it was born. The instinct of the parents is to feed the nestlings that look the strongest and healthiest.

@@lifeforce3451 Survival of the fittest isn’t just a saying. I don’t think she “let” him starve. Realistically he would have died in hours if that were true, he took days. Unfortunately he was born last and his siblings had a better start and were stronger and always ready to eat, he was weaker, not as alert and therefore wasn’t as quick to gape (beg) for food.

@@lifeforce3451 They didn’t let it starve. It was probably last born, not as strong as the older siblings. The person recording this video showed in other videos that the parents were “starving” the chick, by conveniently not showing when the chick was fed but only when the siblings were. Stating they starved the baby over days and days of not feeding. The chick would have died within hours had this been the case, not days. This is creative editing for likes and comments.

You have to realize the nest and the parents are at constant threat of predators, and having a weak link can lead to the death of all of them. Animals lean towards what is the best for the sum or the species vs individuals. Of course animals will mourn the dead, but its in their instincts of survival to keep going.

Yes in the country they are actually called flying rodents, they are full of diseases and compete with the native fauna for food. My sister has a farm and has a trap for them. She kills them humanly because they are in plague proportions

That's what they have to do for blind chicks because some food is too big for them and they will choke so have to spit it out but then the food is lost so mama tries to find a fit for all food but only larger chicks can eat larger bugs.@@thomasmleahy6218

Go 1080p, set speed on 0,25 and you will see. Clearly a bird but considering the size difference and color, it was dead for a few days and propably started to smell badly.

I think @10:38. You only ever see 4 chicks in this clip so the immature baby must've already been dead. If you scroll down through the related videos you'll see another clip from the same uploader where you can clearly see the 5th chick before it dies, and just how small it is compared to it's siblings.
