In this episode, Dr. Shawn Tassone discusses the misleading claims and false information surrounding hormone creams, specifically wild yam cream. He highlights the lack of regulation in the cosmetic industry and the dangers of using products that are not FDA-approved.
Dr. Tassone also emphasizes the importance of reading labels and avoiding products that claim to contain progesterone or other hormones but only list wild yam as an ingredient. He warns listeners to be cautious of companies that make false claims and encourages them to seek reliable sources of information because the effectiveness of the cream is not supported by specific research or data.
Dr. Shawn Tassone also discusses the importance of getting hormone levels tested and the potential risks of using over-the-counter progesterone products. He emphasizes the need for prescription-only hormones and warns against self-diagnosis. Dr. Tassone also expresses his opinion that companies marketing cosmetic creams with high doses of progesterone are unethical. He encourages listeners to share the information and do their own research.
Episode Highlights
- Misleading claims and false information surrounding hormone creams.
- Why you should avoid using products that are not FDA-approved and lack proper regulation
- How to read labels and avoid products that contain false claim
- How to seek reliable sources of information when it comes to hormone therapy and treatment options

When I started menopause and couldn’t sleep at all for months, years, on end, and lived in a provider desert…and Tele-doctoring wasn’t very big yet, I used the OTC brand Emerita Progesterone cream every evening, usually on the insides of my arms, 1/4 tsp, before going to bed. And I can 100% attest that it absolutely helped me sleep. I would have died without it. It isn’t a huge amount of progesterone, but it really helped. I’m an osteopath for over 30 yrs, I have a little background in health science, and can attest that this was the only thing that worked. A 4 oz tube has 450 mg of USP Progesterone per ounce = 20 mg per 1/4 tsp (pea size) Now I live in a place with better health care providers and am on prescription progesterone. But at the time, it was a God send for me.

OTC products can and do work for many people. Big Pharma doesn't like folks taking health into their own hands, cuts into their profits. I used Anna's Wild Yam cream when in peri and it stopped the flushing in a day. I never did that well with prescription bhrt creams. I know many who say prescription hormones worked great and many who say otc works great. We are all different. Yes, there are many charlatans out there, but I don't trust big pharma either.

Its not really a mystery why people are skirting by the rules when the FDA and medical field as a whole is 100% corrupted and doesnt get people the help they need either by keeping medications from them or prescribing them wrong ones that might hurt them.

This has been my one "issue" with cycling hormones--that I haven't seen *any* science at all in support of it. There are a couple of individuals who strongly encourage/endorse cycling/rhythmic dosing of hormones, on is an MD, and she says that progesterone down regulates estrogen receptors, and that cycling off P will up regulate those receptors. I can see how it'd make sense, *but* I'd reeeally like to see actual science backing that up. How do we actually know that P down regulates receptors?? I don't have a dog in this race (other than I want to be/feel well!) but I just want the facts. As you've said Dr. T, it really feels like the Wild West out there right now with respect to HRT--but, I guess, at least we're moving in the right direction!

Do you take the regular progesterone capsules, the beige oval shaped ones from the pharmacy, and use them rectally? I happened read about this in a trans forum while researching. It was thought that it absorbs better than if taken orally. So I’m curious…as my doc thought it wouldn’t work when I brought it up., but I wanted to try it vs oral going through the liver.

@@CCOREY5 yes i use bioidentical progesterone capsule with Carthamus tinctorius oil in gelatin capsule. This is the form being manufactured and sold in my country. The absorbtion is just like using it vaginaly. It was my choice to use it this way because i use the vaginal estriol . I read a lot of study about that you have good benefit for sleeping if you take it oraly because your liver converts it to allopregnenololone which is a gaba agonist, induces sleep. In my case it helps me relaxing, sleeping takint it this route. I suppose we are all different but it is worth a try.

Cyclic progesterone worries me. I would fear it would cause typical moodiness doing it that way just like PMS. And then I worry that a daily dose would override the benefits of estrogen. Thank you for helping educate us on progesterone. (I don't have a uterus, but I do recognize the physiological benefits of progesterone.)

Progesterone regulates both ER alpha and ER beta receptors you take it constantly all your doing is down regulating your estradiol. P only occurs at the last half of the cycle naturally in the female body not all the time. It’s best to take at least a few day break every month from progesterone

@@blondebeautylush I'm not here to give my recommendations to others on how they should or shouldn't take HRT. I'm not qualified, as I'm not a doctor, which makes me no where near qualified to tell someone else what they should or shouldn't be doing. I'm a big believer of "you do you". I wasn't actually asking what I should be doing. I was merely presenting the debate and hoping that Shawn Tassone, MD, PhD would see my comment and provide his PhD opinion. Wink =) Love you all. I have tried different over the counter progesterone creams for years. Even a smidge will send me into a dark depression. Now 12 yrs post menopausal (I was 40) they are finally giving me prescription estrogen patch and I started two weeks in trying the 100mg ingested progesterone every other day. I am a bit groggy but not depressed. 🎉 I have also used Bezwecken’s suppositories 1mg estriol and dhea for atrophy which is cheaper for me because my insurance doesn’t cover the estradiol cream (it burned more than helped anyway). Not sure if using progesterone just part time is protective enough or not. I would like to just use it half of the month so I can be more alert and energetic.

Progesterone supports and improves thyroid function. I’ve tested bloods and tracked physical assessments (body temp and resting heart rate) alongside the use of it. Progesterone is a saviour to women. It frees you from the gaslighting of the mainstream medical system that think ‘Estrogen’ is the answer to all hormone problems and the irresponsible prescribing of it. Being in surgical menopause, I couldn’t get progesterone prescribed because it’s seen to only ‘protect the lining of the uterus’, ONAS creams (which are not wild yam they are micronised progesterone) have been transformative for my hormone health. There seems to be quite a lot of misinformation within this video, after having deeply studied the role of progesterone, there is plenty of research to argue against the claims made here about it. I feel disappointed that these claims are being made as I know of only positive health outcomes from the use of it. Another medical doctor wanting to take the power away from women who want to take control of their own health it seems.

I believe allopregnanolone is a metabolite of progesterone which causes so many to sleep well. Doesn't do that for me--at all; I take 200mg P every night and does nothing for my sleep. I a taking a sustained release, so that may be it, but when I took 100mg instant release prior to that, it didn't help me with sleep either, so lucky you! 🙂 Exactly the how and why allopregnanolone does this, I have no idea.
