Episode 11: Continuing from Part 1 / Episode 10, we jump into how we set up our channels for comparison in Smaart, how we calculate the latency, and we AB our findings.
I want to thank all the incredible minds that have inspired me to share what little knowledge I have. It is people like ‪@DaveRat‬ ‪@RobertScovill‬ ‪@PoochRabold‬ ‪@themixwizard4055‬ ‪@ChrisLordAlgeMix‬ ‪@mixwiththemasters‬ ‪@mrwev‬ ‪@waves‬ ‪@AllenandHeathUK‬ and many many more that share knowledge and content that keeps us growing, even though our livelihoods have been brought to a halt.
I also want to thank everyone who has been checking out my videos. I appreciate it more than words can describe. You made this worth while.
Drew Thornton is the FOH Engineer for Billie Eilish and since the industry shut down in March, he started this project named A Sum of Two Busses. He will be diving into his front of house rig for Billie's live show. While using some virtual soundcheck he will be walking you through some of his tips, tricks, and approaches while demonstrating interesting things that the Allen and Heath's DLive console and Waves SuperRack has to offer.
His goal is to make some fun and interesting videos focused around live sound mix engineering, the Dlive, Waves Soundgrid and share some tips, tricks and theories regarding live sound.

Switching to dLive this month and been checking out these videos to prep. This was more telling than I expected! I noticed it in the space more than anything (headphones). It got wider and deeper. Will be trying!

I care. Thanks for sharing. This makes alot of sense. Was just discussing this the other day because of the phase incoherency using a drum smash group through waves without sending dry group through same bypassed process. We are lucky to have an s5000 and super rack for our church set up. Keep up the awesome content.

Really important things modern digital console and plugin systems. lot of digital console have ADC but something NO. My company using many AVID S6L desk and AVID announced ADC processing on VENUE 7 software. ADC really convenience but must tried MDC when u have much time with console and Smaart. if u did it might be can learn lot of thins. Great job !! Oh. and I also made Excel sheet like you. measured every Latency time which Plugin, Stage rack, MADI blur blur ...

Very cool stuff, thanks so much for sharing. For the future, when comparing settings could you please use exactly the same loop of the song? Now, especially with this kind of subtle differences, even a different shaker or hihat could throw a listener off.

Love this video. Do you delay inputs for wireless latency compensation? If you are using axient transmitters there are 2ms of delay in those..."Axient Digital features a wide dynamic range, AES-256 encryption, and only two milliseconds of latency from the mic transducer to the analog output." which would be 192 samples if you are running at 96k. Just curious about your thoughts on this. Thanks!!

do you have a template for this spreadsheet that we could use to calculate our own latency?

Thank you for this series. May I ask how can I find the channel delay when use an analog outboard gear?

what about if you're inserting FX on your group ins. ie: hypabass? I noticed you need to leave the insert "in"; when you take it out, but still assigned, it does not cause any latency. So would you just turn the dry all the way up and the wet all the way down in this case?

Old school alignment? I don’t know any of those techniques. Feel like I skipped a step here...

Basically, for a parallel path you would put the same plugins on both paths. An example being a parallel compression bus you would assign the same compressor to both busses. On your dry bus you just put the threshold as high as it goes so the compressor isn't effecting the audio, and on the compressed bus you set it how you want it. That way on both busses the audio has to follow the same path, which keeps it time aligned.

@asumoftwobusses6304 3 жыл бұрын
Yep! Exactly what Taylor said! The idea is if you decide to do parallel paths, make both paths identical in processing so the the timing is the same. But leave the thresholds open on your dry. It’s the best way to make absolutely sure that you two paths will be aligned precisely

@@asumoftwobusses6304 thanks guys! do you know if parameters like attack/release affect latency?
@asumoftwobusses6304
@asumoftwobusses6304 3 жыл бұрын
@@zachjurkovich3547 I don’t believe so. The only thing that would shift phase coherence between channels would be Multiband processing and eq. Eq can shift the time a tiny bit, but I think full range compression you would be fine
