Episode 4: This episode is a plugin shoot out between Waves and the Dlive's DEEP Processing. We will be looking at the Dlive's 16VU and the Waves 160VU, Dlive's OptTronik and Waves LA2a, and the Dlive's Peak76 and the Waves CLA76. Thanks to @albis_music for the tracks! Drew Thornton is the FOH Engineer for Billie Eilish and since the industry shut down in March, he started this project named A Sum of Two Busses. He will be diving into his front of house rig for Billie's live show. While using some virtual soundcheck he will be walking you through some of his tips, tricks, and approaches while demonstrating interesting things that the Allen and Heath's DLive console and Waves SuperRack has to offer.
His goal is to make some fun and interesting videos focused around live sound mix engineering, the Dlive, Waves Soundgrid and share some tips, tricks and theories regarding live sound.

Nice work Drew! Episode 2 on the use of Lakes (or similar) to EQ your matrices and not touching your channel EQ's is something I've seen so many people not understand, that was a great explanation. Also, very brave of you to learn video, I hope you washed your hands afterwards!

They were all pretty close and I think anyone could conclude that both the A&H and waves comps are comparable. On my ear buds, in the first few comparisons the A&H comps had more lows / low mids. The waves was a little thinner. On the 76 drum comparison, the A&H seemed to add mid range and sustain on the drum, whereas waves sounded much more like the bypassed sound, but with more snap like you'd expect from a 76.. Cool test!! I have an SQ and a waves server. I think buying the SQ "plugins" makes a ton of sense considering it doesn't add any latency, and like you mentioned frees up the server for other things. I'd love to see more videos like this. Thanks

Loving the series! Using a DLive S5000 and these videos are really helping. I have waves as well but trying to get as much out of the console before using waves. I hope you do a video or three on the Dyn8 as well. So many uses for that in foward and reverse eq and compression!

The 16VU and OptTronik sound so similar with 160VU and LA2a, but I would nudge the CLA76 to Peak76, the Waves version seems sound more airy. Thanks for your hard works.

... thx drew! cool insights in your workflow etc. ... i'm using a c2k (w/ wavesv3) and a cdm32 (w/ m-dante) and superrack soundgrid for live-sugaring :)

I prefer the LA2A on the DLive in the bass part. I think its because there is a conversion involved to make the Waves one work

Would it be possible to do this video again, but doing mono dLive to one ear and mono Waves to the other ear? I don't have a long enough musical memory to remember how the transients of each device sounded. Also, could you put chapters in this video at the start of each plugin so I can A/B them a little bit easier? That would be super helpful!

Thanks for the shootout Drew! Are there track limitations on processing with DEEP plugins at 96 kHz vs 48 kHz? How many of the DYN8s can it handle at 48 vs 96?
