Have you ever heard people say, "I remember the good old days when..."? I've said those same words regarding megalodon tooth hunting in Summerville. Well we ran into a short lived place that was just like the old days, but this time I had a video camera so you could come along. Wanna see what its like to collect shark teeth at a site that had some of the best fossil bearing formation I've ever seen? Watch this video for a glimpse!

Indian Trace could go either way. our formations have been washed around by the ocean so its possible that the teeth tumbled some distance before coming to rest where we found them. it is also possible that the reformulation was not chaotic and the teeth are associated. either way they have found good homes now!

@blackriverfossils 9 жыл бұрын
+Alexander Huijsmans thank you! I did not take material from this site to search for micros but I have from others. The formation at this site was reformulated many times so its not the best to search for tiny teeth. We have an oligocene deposit here called the Chandler Bridge that has never been disturbed since it was the ocean bottom and that is the one I search.

You need to get an ABS digger to prevent damaging your finds, they're about $10 and last a lifetime since they wear like soft steel.
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 8 жыл бұрын

blackriverfossils Try it, it really is great for digging without damaging your finds, I use one for metal detecting: www.jimmysierra.com/tools_treasurescoopC.html - You could also get a Ball Tipped Coin Probe instead of a screwdriver, the ball tip won't do damage if you accidentally scrape your find, specially with teeth enamel.
@blackriverfossils

+Cujucuyo It looks like plastic. I see why that would be ideal for detecting but we are digging in a compacted gravel formation that is commonly as hard as asphalt. Sometimes we can't even get unto it with a sledge hammer and pry bar.

a spoon would work in some spots, but in most areas the formation is hard so a spoon would bend if you tried to dig with it.

blackriverfossils huh interesting what about using something like there's this thing that's a blackhead remover but it's got a tiny hook shape so I guess maybe using one of those or something similar to that would work or not I mean you guys do this a lot

Do you have to travel to the USA in order to find Megalodon tooth?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 5 жыл бұрын
no megalodon teeth can be found on nearly every contintent. Not sure about Antarctica but I wouldn't be surprised if they were there too.

+Mr.PlushWinner I've been collecting my whole life so I've seen a lot of teeth. I just know what they are through reading, talking to others, and experience.

How do you tell the difference between a tooth that was damaged before fossilization, and after?
@blackriverfossils
@blackriverfossils 9 жыл бұрын
CORRECTS YOU great question! There are two ways I know of. If it was a break a long time ago, the color will be consistent across the entire tooth whereas a recent break will be a different color because the interior of the fossil will show. Also, a recent break will be rough, sharp on the edges, and sometimes jagged or sharp because it won't have had any time to wear naturally.

I was born and raised in Summerville. My siblings and I use to find all sorts of sharks teeth, tons of Megalodon teeth. The Ashley River ran through our property. It's been a long time since I've been fossil hunting. I'd love to do it again sometime. Do you know any good places to go in the upstate? I live in Landrum now (Exit 1 on I26). Cheers!- Wulf

+LycanthropicArt you grew up in a great place! Unfortunately I don't know any places in the upstate to collect, though there are surely fossils to be found there. Happy hunting!
