Quinn trimmed the fat off the streaming video with its first several minutes of tedious technical glitches and just gave us the lean meat here and it was Delicious! THIS was really all I needed to see after watching the trailer through by itself the first few times. Which I recommend btw. Enjoy the trailer by itself first & THEN watch whatever commentaries you want. But take it in and enjoy it for yourself like your favorite food. Anyone else notice the shot of Chani in battle where she is breathing heavy? A direct parallel to a similar shot of Paul in part 1 from his vision. Another case of his visions being false or involving a different character? He had visions of Jamis training him only to end up killing him in battle.

They are not false visions. As Quinn explained, his powers of prescience give him the ability to see many possible futures. He can navigate through those possible futures and decide which one he would like to bring about by performing the correct action at the correct time. The visions of him being trained by Jamis was one of those possible futures, but a different choice made by Paul locked him onto a different future from that one.

I was also blown away by the trailer. Thanks for the detailed breakdown. The story of Dune played a pivotal role in my youth and dramatically expanded my understanding of the world. From childish fantasies, imagining oneself as the heroic and uniquely powerful Paul, to the crashing reality of Dune Messiah, and the first glimpses of the understanding that when politics and religion ride together you reap the whirlwind. I'm now fifty, and the lessons I gleaned from Dune and its sequels seem more relevant today than they've ever been in my life.

Villeneuve's vision of Herbert's world has been the closest by far to my own perceptions of it, from the tactile feel to the esoteric music choices, the use of "voice," the culture representation to the actual character portrayals and actor choices. That they put that exchange between Gurney and Paul ("...that I gain it.") into the *trailer* told me that Villeneuve gets the central thesis of the entire first trilogy: the tragedy of prophecy (real and manufactured) and the blessing of individual human agency. Whether it's the trap of prescience, the excruciating burden of Leto II and the eventually liberation by Siona, I think this is the central theme of Herbert's work.

It's kinda feeling like Lady Margot and Irulan are subsuming the job of Count Fenring, which I'm mildly ok with if they do a good job of it, because that's lending a more active, on-screen role to the Bene Gesserit than one might get from the books. Shaddam was already kinda robbed of agency throughout the first novel anyway, so doubling down and making him look like a sock puppet of the BG isn't that big a deal for me.
@troikas3353
@troikas3353 10 ай бұрын
I mean, technically the BG are the puppeteers of nearly everyone so it still lines up. The difference is just one of scale; Shaddam, Baron Harkoennen, Leto and the other House leaders are among the most competent and deadly people in the universe, all with their own plans within plans.. but they are all ultimately only seriously concerned with their own smaller perspectives, even if that "small" perspective encompasses the next hundred~ years of the Empire and their Houses existence within it. The BG by contrast operate on the scale of history as they scheme to guide the path of the houses over generations of generations. It may have been easier to do in a series format but I think it's possible to both portray Shaddam as incredibly competent and dangerous force in his own right while also still being part of the sisterhoods web the way the rest of the Houses unwittingly are.

I do hope we get an extended version with all the missing scenes reinserted. They were sorely missed in part one. Particularly the speculation as to the traitor and the banquet.
@CookieTube
@CookieTube 10 ай бұрын
I do hope it with you! However, all things considered, I don't see what the Yueh's storyline and the Banquet scene would have added more than what is not already shown in the movie in other scenes!!! Villeneuve does a great job showing what and how the Harkonnen realy are, how they operate, their true intentions and their backstabbing, etc. So, the whole Yueh storyline is in that aspect not much more than filler. Plus, you really need to take the time to explain the whole Imperial Conditioning thing much MUCH better to the audiance. You really need to drive it home that that is not something one can easily overcome, practically impossible to think one can.... or the whole speculation and surprise thing doesn't make much sense for the average non-Dune fan viewer. And that would have added a lot more 'slow' pacing and exposition, etc. You can do that in a book... not so much in a movie.... Same with the Banquet scene. Sure, visually it would be stunning. And it would also explain certain politics and dynamics between characters more, and earlier on. But again, not much more than what we can see and derive from other scenes in the movie. So, seeing it in that perspective, I think Villeneuve made the right decision in juggling between a true adaptation and having major problems and risk in bad pacing (and thus very negative impact in box office).... and between cutting (duplicated) things which can be shown in other ways, for the sake of having a good flow of the movie, without taking away the underlying meanings, dynamics, and story telling. But yeah, as a fan, I sure can relate to missing those scenes!! However, the success of movies (and thus the chance to having sequels, etc), especially ones based on books with such deep lore and caliber, don't only depend on fans who wouldn't mind sitting thru a 4 hour movie with 30 minutes of boring dialog, so to speak. In fact, it mostly depends on how the non-fan sees it.
@Concreteowl
@Concreteowl 10 ай бұрын
@@CookieTube I disagree. The feeling in the book is Leto and his family are trying to survive the trap they know they are in. When the word gets out that their is a traitor we know who it is but others do not. The paranoia is part of the trap. When Gurney reunites with Paul he almost kills someone else thinking they were the traitor the banquet tells us more about how the planet works. What people believe the Fremen to be. But it also shows more of the family trying to survive the trap. In what we got Leto accepts the challenge, instantly feels pessimistic and gets stabbed in the back by someone we hardly know. Its far from filler and something Lynch does much better. I hardly care about Issacs Duke because he is so easily defeated. Prognow however is a warm, noble person surrounded by top tier advisors who rises to a challenge and is cut down regardless. Much more book accuracy there.

@CookieTube
@CookieTube 10 ай бұрын
@@Concreteowl Sure.... but all of that is not needed for the main themes of the movie (the ones Villeneuve focusses on that is). It was also made clear that Yueh was the traitor with the scenes with the Baron at Guidi Prime. It was also made clear that there was a lot of doubt and that House Atreides was in termoil etc during this time. As for what the Fremen are: again, that is made clear thru many other scenes (mainly Paul's scene, but also via other dispositions). As for the other characters at the banquet scene, they réaly are inconsequential to the overal main story. Those are additional story lines which fans would like to see, but which are not important because they only re-establish/confirm what is already been told via other means. Aka: they are filler. I can also list many other things which weren't in the movie which we (fans) would have loved to see, but which are either not really needed or can be established via other means. Again, a movie is a complete other medium than a book, and you also need to take in account that a movie is primary made to be successful for the general public, not just for fans. The banquet scene really is NOT crucial to the story (especially with all the other dispositions which were shown)!

@@mdmyer I have shown the movie to nephews and friends (age ranging from 13 to in their 40s). All whom have never heard of Dune before. And most of them could follow everything. Of course, they don't know the characters and who's who as quickly as fans will and at first, sure, and there might have been some questions or confusion. But to say they couldn't follow or where confused throughout the whole movie or something would be untrue. After the initial confusion (like you have in movies where it is not flatout said who's who, like thinking the audience is dumb), they all quickly caught on who's who. And of course, only the fans would know the details and intricacies of some relationships, but those don't really matter to follow the story. It makes it a lot richer, sure, but it doesn't prevent you from following the main arcs. Could there have been more character development? Of course there could!!! Would I have loved to see more? You bet I would! But was it too little? No. IMHO

I think the scene with Raban's concerned face takes place on an ornithopter as he is escaping a Fremen or worm attack on a spice crawler, much like the opposite scene early on in Part I when the Harkonnen's take out the Atreides carry-all. It would be a fitting eye-for-an-eye, and an indication that the Fremen under Muad'dib are much stronger than Raban had anticipated and he is now fearful of the outcome.

I enjoyed the books as a teen, really got into the Lynch movie as a young adult, but Denis has made THE best version ever, and that's saying a lot as I have never enjoyed Zendaya, but her version of Chani is excellent. There are only a handful of movies I have watched over and over again for decades, Princess Bride, Platoon, Buckaroo Banzai, and more recently Interstellar. I've watched this version of Dune at least a dozen times so far, and can't wait to see part 2. The older I get the more I understand the underlying themes of Herbert's writing, and what I now understand at 52, perhaps when I hit 72 I'll understand even more. Thank you Quinn, you're one of the few people I've found on YT that truly GETS classic Sci-Fi, and modern works as well, keep it up, you're only going to grow in influence!

I almost doubted the choice of Walken as the Emperor. I now feel I was wrong. Villeneuve manages to get outstanding performances out of people. Look at the Duke in Pt 1 when he talks about "they tried to take the life of my son!" and compare that to the same actor in Star Wars. Obviously scripts matter, but Villeneuve seems to just get something extra out of the cast members somehow.

@CookieTube
@CookieTube 10 ай бұрын
Yes, this! Even many (new) Dune fans actual miss that. In fact, I dare to say, even Quinn himself missed a bit, so it seems from his last live stream?... Where he seem to suggest that the Fremen Revered Mothers where normal Fremen who where indoctrinated by the Missionaria Protectiva. And developed the same spice agony/other memory capabilities as the BG (as in a parallel evolution kind of thing). At least that is what I got from his statements during the stream? But, those Fremen Revered Mothers _ARE_ Bene Gesserit. At least they started as such. It was after generation upon generation living their own indoctrination/Missionaria Protectiva that they became Fremen Revered Mothers. So, it is not parallel evolution per say, but rather, their genetic origins WERE Bene Gesserit long time ago.
@patreekotime4578
@patreekotime4578 10 ай бұрын
@@CookieTube I dont think so. They were trained by the Bene Gesserit in some ways and learned their ability to unlock genetic memories. But if Bene Gesserit genetic memories were present in the Fremen, they would know about the Missionaria Protectiva and how they had been manipulated. They would also know the Weirding Ways and the Fremen wouldnt need Jessica to teach them. The tao orgy also appears to be unique to the Fremen version of the Water of Life rituals and not something they got directly from the BG. Also, the entire religion of the Fremen does NOT come from the BG... they only wove the Panoplia Propheticus on top of their ancient Zen-Sunni Wanderer religious traditions and prophesy going back to the Quran.

@@brotherjohnnyxXxX To be fair, they, especially the Baron are cartoonish and silly in the book. This baron is far more menacing than the often bumbling, obsessive, power hungry, food-and-sex-addicted ego-maniac in the book. Both films suffer from trying to make the various "tribes" easily identifiable to audiences. Lynch chose red hair, Villeneuv chose bald.. both miss the mark of Feyd having the same hair color as Paul, highlighting him as the anti-Paul. Austin Butler at least looks only a few years older than Chalomet, and has the right lips for the part... although without the Baron's sexual tastes on display that probably doesnt matter.

@CookieTube
@CookieTube 10 ай бұрын
Yep. Those figures in the background in the arena fight between Feyd and slave... are the future/dune version of the traditional Spanish *Matadors* (bull fighters)/ *Banderilleros* . Look up the traditional costume/clothing of them (called *Traje de luces* )!! They look 100% identical: slim figure/clothing, head wear with the two points (called the *Montera* ) although enlarged/exaggerated in Dune, the swords, the stance, the side to side movements, etc.... And of course, the whole setting: we're in a fight arena/colosseum type setting. PS: 'Matador' literally means 'killer'. And 'Banderilleros' are a kind of helpers. It makes 100% sense that is what they are. And Villeneuve does a brilliant job in referencing Banderilleros with their look. And he also does a brilliant job in showing them and what it means.... It gives a whole deeper perspective into how Harkonnen are: hypocritical, underhanded, etc. Doing as if they are the best/biggest/badass warriors... yet need a whole bunch of 'backup' in the form of those Banderilleros, just in case.... Master move form Villeneuve. (and if they are a kind of human hybrid, like some suggest, it makes the spider hybrid from part 1 tie into all of this too)
