Custer' last stand was also the last victory for the plains Indians...& their last stand as well, until Wounded Knee became the final monument to Indian/army conflicts on the plains.

Nope, the Nez Perce inflicted several defeats on the Army on their attempt to reach Canada in 1877.

I would recommend Jerome Greene's book "Nez Perce Summer 1877" if you are interested in their journey towards the border.

Yes that is Factual. I Gather from previous First Person Memories,& Story telling. By the Elders! That Sitting Bull,& the Other elderly Tribal Band members all took that Important Task Upon them selfs. The Social Order among the Various Tribes? At that Time! Was still very Prominent Among the People. Family always Came First.

What's the song that starts at 7:33? Thanks!

Great to hear from you and thanks for the question. The song is "Comanche" by The Orestads. They made an album of Custer / 7th Cavalry songs which I think was called Big Horn River. Hope this helps.

Could not of happened to more deserved people .No village full of women and children to murder that day .They make this out to be an Epic Battle for Custer .They should write it as it was a epic battle for Sitting Bull

It's a white mans habit where if they lost it was a massacre, if they won it was a battle. Some things never change.

I don't really think it has ever been considered an epic battle for Custer. He was certainly portrayed as a victim in many ways which was of course totally wrong.

Custer wasn't a General at the battlefield, he was a Colonel. After the civil war, military downsized. Thus he became this rank.
@DodgersTrips
@DodgersTrips Жыл бұрын
He was a Brevet Major General from the Civil War. It was considered the right thing to do to address an officer by his brevet rank. Custer's regular army rank was that of a Lieutenant Colonel. The officer commanding the 7th Cavalry was Colonel Sturgis, though he was not on field duty.

I was there a month earlier, July 0f 93. Along with my wife and two of our sons, we also toured The Badlands, The Black Hills, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse Mt, Custer State Park, Devils Tower in Wyoming, tried to get into Hole IN The Wall where Butch Cassidy hung out, and a few other places. Very memorable trip.

I was there in 1976 for our country's bicentennial and the centennial of Custer finally getting what he deserved for taking seven Confederates out of a POW camp at Front Royal, Virginia and murdering them. They were all from the 43rd Battalion, Virginia Cavalry, John Singleton Mosby's command. RIP.

Custer certainly divided opinion and some of his actions during his career were not always right. Thank you for sharing your opinion.

It's seems ironic to me that people are celebrating a massive tactical failure. The people that were attacked by Custer and his troops weren't a formidable world leading military army out to conquer the world. Or destroy the US Army, they were at best nomads who lived off the land. Were is the honor in that to be glorified
@chairde
@chairde 3 жыл бұрын
It is an important part of American history. You underestimate the abilities of the native warriors. They were well armed and knew how to use the terrain. In fact if they had the ability to produce guns and such it is doubtful they would have been defeated. The Seminoles of Florida were never defeated by the way. Native Americans were and are very fierce. During WWII the Navajo code talkers were legendary.

@@chairde the europeans came as conquering armies. The first world war was the europeans ( whites as they like to call themselves) against the native people of what is now called the America's. The other two world wars were the whites fighting each other for control.

@@mjs6157 " The first world war was the europeans ( whites as they like to call themselves) against the native people of what is now called the America's" Cute, but history did not begin in 1492. Greco-Persian Wars 1900 years before that The Romans (i.e. Europe) invaded Africa (Carthage) in the Punic Wars 1700 years before Europe hit the Americas. Roman-Persian Wars The Crusades Mongol Invasion of Europe Ottoman Wars All were "World Wars", if your criteria is simply continent vs continent etc. long before the Americas.

I liked this video, but in some ways again I am upset that 20 years of our recorded history was lost to nasty Beta and VHS video tapes. Film was still a better resolution media, but choked out of the consumer market by cheap ass video tape. It's like the 1980's and 1990's don't exist, because current media won't touch the low-res nasty recordings of that period.
@DodgersTrips

Valid point about the quality of subjects being worthwhile but the quality of videotape does not lend itself to ageing and doesn't have the clarity of film. I suppose it came down to video being an easy and CHEAP & immediate medium for the masses. Glad to know you enjoyed this video. Thanks for watching.

The people that fought off the attacking soldiers said the battle only lasted long enough for a man to eat a meal. Also the soldiers ranks broke out of fear, men could be seen running so hard their knees were hitting their chins. Doesn't seem to be such a glorious last stand of honorable men, standing for all that is right in the world to me.
