Yep, me too and every other plant lover too I bet! It's like falling in love, but with a plant it is as if as soon as you buy it the love is requited. I've had far more success with plants than with women!

I used to never be like that, the other day I was at a plant store and saw a ginseng plant, it just said "pssttt" and called me over. Did not plan to spend $40 for one little plant but that's the way it goes now.

I used to not be fussed with dragonfruit because, as you mentioned, it tastes like nothing. I thought it was just a novelty thing. Until my mum started growing her own. I never knew they could be so juicy and sweet! So amazing.

Yellow dragon fruit are very sweet and delicious. They are not everywhere, but you can find them in specialty/Asian food stores

Here's a solution for flavor. Cut some Dragon fruit and dip some honey, or brown sugar or maple syrup for enhanced taste😮

You're dead right about them tasting different when grown at home. I got my first fruit today and I was shocked by how sweet it was because all the ones I had tasted were bland. I was just growing them because I liked the texture.

I’m on minute 16 into this video, and I caught myself just smiling like a goof. These are so cool, didn’t know they grew on a cactus-like plant, and these guys are totally in love with these plants! I’m feeling their joy checking out these dragon fruit plants!

Sending love from the Philippines! My grandma has a huge trellis of dragonfruit here. It stopped producing fruit for about 3 years but then it’s recently had 2 fruits (still growing) after we added more fertilizer to it and cut it back a bit. Your video was so timely because we weren’t sure when to pick the fruit. Now, I’m looking forward to harvesting them when they’re ripe :)

Dragon fruit needs direct Sunlight. My niece and I got plants at the same time last year. Her's is in her pool enclosure mine is outside but areas facing west. Mine has fruit, her's doesn't.

Brilliant!!❤️❤️🌺❤️❤️ Awesome work!! Reminds me of my father, he could grow anything. He fed the entire neighborhood growing up from our 21 fruit trees and massive vegetable garden. Our area with veggie beds was larger then most people entire house. I was very lucky growing up to learn how to grow and produce food healthy organic food for many people eat healthy.

I got my first dragon fruit flower!!! 😍💃🏻☺️ it only lasted a day but what a beauty! Neighbors kept coming by just to see it. I’m from Colombia and we call them pitaya. They are delicious because we pick them when they are ripe-you are right. It makes all the difference to pick fruit off the plant and enjoy 😋 Thank you! María Lucía 💛💙❤️

Hi Richard, I only knew this dragon fruit when I came to San Diego and hesitated to try and took me almost 20 years, I didn’t know this fruit has so much variety and it really fascinated me, and made me crazy to be part of my life. This fruit has the texture and taste that I don’t mind eating often. I love the way when the branches form to a canopy sort of look. I enjoy staring at them, I even talk to them. I have watch your videos on how you take care of them, feed them, prune them, pollinate them, and harvest them. ❤️❤️❤️ These fruit so much!

Hi I’m from Africa. I tasted the fruit for the first time in my life yesterday and I’ve never seen anyone growing it here in Nigeria or in the area where I stay. I searched for how to grow dragon fruits from seed and that’s how I found you guys. I’d just have to wait the years out to harvest my first fruit. I notice with most fruits and berries the mini varieties taste so much better and they produce sweeter fruits if they have colder winters, so living in canada theyre always my favourite type of fruits to grow

I love both of your channels, keep those video's coming Kevin and Richard! I'm so, so jealous of that Californian weather... I live in the Netherlands, I have some seedlings and just bought a bigger plant which I have cut up into 20 or so cuttings. They all rooted fine. This winter I wont have a problem taking those inside but when they start to grow on trellis I will need a much bigger house/greenhouse lol. I'm afraid I will have to give away most. Anyway it's a nice hobby.

Oh wow, 8months later I wonder how this is going. Did you grow them straight from seeds to maturity or did you graft any?

@@CrunchFAP_Supreme I had some die off, but I ended up with about 10 nice size plants now trailing up my fence. I’ve done it for every color at this point and have to throw seedlings away and just keep the biggest. Just throw them on a paper towel in a covered pan and a heat mat. No grafting should be necessary for this type of plant.

Seeds are cool if thats your only choice but will take around 3-5 years to fruit unlike a cutting that can produce in a year

I love dragon fruits. Ordered my first cuttings in May. Thanks to Richard's videos, planted them in pot with trellis in August. I'm excited, it's growing rapidly, but I live in NC, don't know how well it's going to do. Hope it'll survive the winter.

If you can't make a greenhouse for them before winter, try tarping them. And definitely start growing some cuttings separately incase they die from winter you have a backup to regrow...

I hated dragonfruit as it was so boring until I started growing a small tree in the garden (from a fruit that a customer gave me from their enormous dragonfruit ‘tree’ which must have been 40ft tall) and they’re amazing when grown to ripe in the sunshine. We also grow our own prickly pears which are some work to get to the inside but the taste is amazing, especially if you make a sorbet out of it. This guys garden is amazing!

I had to wait for someone at the grocery store today and I knew it would be a long long wait so I sat at Starbucks. I haven't been there in years but decided to get a drink and it was their mango dragonfruit lemonade. So good! But I can't afford Starbucks every day, nor do I want to. I found a copycat recipe but finding dragonfruit isn't easy and the powder can be expensive. And I'd bet that it's not as good. So glad I found this video. I live in Arizona, in the desert and I'm sure I can grow a cactus. So I'm going to order a dragonfruit plant and grow my own. I'm really excited about that. Just a bit more research on the one best suited to our climate. We're a bit harsher than southern California. Thank you so much for this.

I bought 1 plant at Lowes and 3 cuttings on line 2 years ago and I've now got 50+ plants. I'm here in Florida and the Dragon Fruit seems to really like this zone. The cuttings root nearly 100% of the time.

I tasted dragon fruit for the first time about 2 weeks ago. I got two from the supermarket, kept them for 2 and 4 days before eating. Had it cold scooping out the flesh with a spoon. They were red and sweet. I enjoyed the experience. I hope the seed i plant will geow into dragon fruit cactus within 4 years. I also hope to come by them again soon. Thanks for the video

I live in Arkansas. I started some Dragon fruit two years ago from seed that I got from the grocery store. I watched this video and was quite impressed about the size of your plants. Mine are only about 2 feet tall, I hope I have them in big enough pots (3 gallon sized) and in the right kind of soil (sandy loam). I have to move them into the greenhouse when temperatures get too low, so a bigger pot is more difficult to move. I have them on moss poles but it looks like I'll need to upgrade to stronger wooden forms like yours (only a tad smaller). I'm interested in what kind, how much, and when on fertilizer. Thanks for this video, it has taught me so much

I like it when you said even if it doesn’t taste good, it tastes better if you’re growing it yourself. That is so true. What people don’t realize is when we combine bitters, sours, and other flavors together with cooking or blending they enhance a propagation of flavors. Basically an amalgam of yummy.

I tried dragon fruit a couple months ago I bought 2 from my local grocery store and they where hard so I put them in a paper bag and checked them everyday and after a week they where a bit soft and I cut it it was sooo sweet I couldn't believe how good it was! I kept hearing people say they don't tast like anything its probably that they weren't ripe yet. Have patience with it. To me it tastes like a kiwi and a pear combo....amazing!! Dragons eggs!!!

I started growing some peruvian apple cactus this year, it's in the same genus as dragonfruit and produce pitaya. I just thought they are really interesting and worth a mention. I cant wait to see how they grow!

I like all your vids. very informative and helpful. I got one of these for Christmas...very small but full of leaves I took a tip from this vid and transplanted it in a much larger pot. The plant is just going crazy now. I was wondering if you could maybe make a video for people like me that get all kinds of small plants as gifts and they are usually something I know nothing about caring for. I think it would be helpful to have a small how to to get those christmas plants off to a good start

My daughter was curious and bought one at the store. It really had no flavor so we we never bought it again. Flavor to price ratio was not worth it based on what we had at the store. However 3 weeks ago I went to farmers market they where selling for $1.00. I still wasn’t going to buy it but then they cut up a few. I forgot to eat breakfast so hey why not get a piece and WOW it is now my favorite fruit of all time. So amazing.

I love seeing the excitement of his face talking about the special but the regular too Your not a collector your a great grower :) I have a strawberry cacti i grew from seed i can't wait for it to flower and fruit I have been growing it for over 5 years :) It will be special :) I have a Dragon fruit too and a couple prickly pear types :) i love cacti :)

1st question is what does the dragon fruit do to you when you eat it? Does it give you gas (my guess)? Next question is- I live in the East ( Pittsburgh PA) so I get freezing temperatures in winter & Shorter and not it's not as hot summers as in CA, wiill I be able to grow dragon fruit outside here? Will I have to take it inside during the Winter?? How should I care for it while inside? I have grow lights I could keep it under if that would be best and if that would keep it growing throughout the Winter time. If it would, how many hours of light per day would be recommended? I think I would prefer to buy a cutting to speed up the time to to the fruiting stage stage so do you have a recommended source(s) for purchasing cuttings? I'll definitely check out and subscribe to your channel but I figured I would ask these questions here or for the benefit of everyone in the East. thank you in advance for your help

And growing them they do like lights in winter and will keep growing if they are warm enough Mine doesn't grow in the winter I have it in a cool window that gets very little light I don't water my cacti much because it's cool and lower light so I don't water and they hibernate in a way But giving them light and warmth in the winter they will grow faster for you And thanks I hope you enjoy your stay

Actually found a Ecuador Palora fruit in one of my local grocery stores. We saved some of the seeds and planted them. They are a couple inches tall at this point. Guess it would be best to find some root stock to transplant it on to.

I like Richard as much as the next but idk about the God of d.f. lol... George Emerich... Paul Thomson... Edgar Valdivia... Gray Martin... and others have 20 + years of experience and expertise. Richard is an awesome d.f. grower and nice AND generous with his experience... doing a big part in bringing d.f. to a more mainstream position in society .. and that hopefully will bring price down as well and help d.f. become more accessible to all 🙌🙌

Thanks for such a passionate, fun, and informative video🏆 One of my favorite cacti varieties, although i grew them for their incredible flowers. I'm so envious of where you live to have them this big. Up north you need a big window or a green house. Hearing of the different textures and what happens to them with freezing, these fruits sound like they'd be perfect for making sherbet...🍨

The first time I ate one was last month, super good, not too sweet, very moist, love it, I used a teaspoon and ate from the peel like a cup of ice cream, it was fun. I let some seed dry with some pulp, into the peel cup, ants do the work to make the pulp desaparecen, hehe, so I just put the peel cup in a small pot and a lil bit of soil into it and now I have some tiny ones. Thank goodness I found this video to know how to care. Thanks.

I planted dragon fruit this year here in California and it's doing great. I wish you talked more about how to plant them and maintain the trees. I noticed your trees are in planters, my isn't. Also do they need protection from frost? Any specific frutolizers?

Dragon fruit sweetness seems to vary vastly from fruit to fruit. I have had dragonfruit from the same bin that are miles apart in sweetness. Yellow dragon fruit are incredibly sweet if thats your preference.

I'm imagining what it'd be like to grow an exclusively yellow garden. Yellow squash, yellow carrots, yellow corn, lemons... and now yellow dragon fruit. It'd be neat to see how far the idea can go. Or, better yet, a garden that's laid out by color. White in one area, yellow in another, purple, blue, red...
