That "juicy" banana tree @ 1:48 will wreak havoc upon anyone who has latex sensitivities. So if you are allergic to latex, don't grow bananas, and if you DO decide to grow bananas, stay well away from the sap. I learned my lesson the hard way.

I would plant the banana in the ground along a fence that gets reflected heat and protection from the wind. Let the pups grow and try to keep five or so bananas growing together all the time. Keep it mulched well fed, and watered. Banana pups are easy to transplant when new ones grow. I live inland from San Diego and have over 100 banana plants and get fruit throughout the year. Once the banana fruits, which takes about 10 months or a little more, chop it down, split the trunk in half and lay it split side down in the soil. That helps mulch your plants too. If you do this you will always have banana plants on hand.

If you dig out the root of the offshoots you can actually transplant those and get new banana trees. You need to trim the base of the offshoot and let dry 1 to 2 days and then transplant

Video idea. Put soil against a waterspout of a root stock to root it. Then graft on the ideal variety to propagate your tree.

one thing about having moved to the DFW area last year that I've learned, it's that us San Diego growers are majorly spoiled. The wind here is no joke! Not to mention the length of season: We have winter, light summer, hard summer, light summer again, then winter. The lack of pests: I love growing zucchini more than anything else and the SVB come at me with a vengeance, which I've never had to deal with in East County. But you guys and your camaraderie crack me up. Thanks!

We bought our house here in Australia 10 years ago and it came with a beautiful established Meyer Lemon tree. It gives two harvest a year of the most incredibly sweet fruit. It actually inspired me to make that part of the yard my mini orchard 😊 And just quietly 12:21 😍

Bananas are grown in circles of 3... once the grampa produces it gets cut down and the papa is next, the son grows and then another pup takes the place of the grampa.... 3 generations. I've been growing dwarf cavendish and ice cream bananas in 4 different circles now for 6 yrs.... it's a grass and grows from a rhysome.

I was recently on the island of Tahiti in French Polynesia and was able to smell freshly cut banana tree. I definitely smelled banana skin, but I can also see how you could interpret the scent as cucumber also. It's like a really fresh and green banana skin!

As someone who lives in the Caribbean, Saint Lucia 🇱🇨 where green banana aka (green fig) and saltfish aka bacalou is our National dish. The smell from the cut banana tree definitely smells like CUCUMBER!!!! We often pair a cucumber salad with our national dish.

I don't know if it's a region difference or what, but in the southeast we also grow bananas, often even as landscaping plants, and they transplant at any size super easy! You'll probably get baby offshoots at the base over time anyways! These and agave are propagated at such a high rate down here! 😂

Banana stems are one-third edible vegetation and two-thirds water, but have a good amount of protein and fat plus minerals and vitamins. They are a good source of fiber, potassium, phosphorus, B6 and calcium, as good as the banana fruit itself.

But why did I actually smell the banana 🤣🤣🤣

I hope they didn't get any of the banana sap on their clothes. I know from experience that stuff stains blood red (we actually call it "banana blood") and doesn't come out. I found it even stains concrete. I actually have a specific set of clothes I use for cutting down banana trees.

I have a dull old serrated knife I use for cutting even large bananas. Also - banana stem cores are used in several cuisines - the white interior part.

Heavy wind is absolutely the most annoying thing I've dealt with in gardening/farming. Specifically, trying to build anything greenhouse related, especially anything with getting plastic onto the greenhouse. I got a text from the neighbor one time with a picture of one of the cheap Amazon 20 x 10 greenhouses sitting directly on top of his fence

Hey guys! I love watching you guys all the time, I think you're all wonderful and hilarious, but today you made me very sad when you cut out those "extra" banana shoots LOL. I'm in Florida where we grow bananas everywhere. You can grow them in your climate too, but it is important to understand how they grow in order to get great success, and the very first thing to understand is that a banana tree plant does not like to stand alone, especially in windy climates like yours. Banana plants grow from a central corm (rhizome). The first shoot the corm sends up would be called the parent plant, it will grow taller than the rest and send out a flower shoot to create the little golden nuggets of creaminess we all love. After it produces fruit, that parent plant naturally dies back (you should leave the debris in the grove to provide the necessary nutrients) and then its offspring (the smaller shoots you just cut out) will shoot up from the corm to take its place and produce your next harvest. This natural growth pattern naturally creates the small grove environment they need to thrive. It's important for them to grow this way because they need the shelter of one another as protection against wind and harsh sun, and it also allows them to make the most out of the available nutrients. This also helps them to create the humidity they need in order to thrive. Growing banana plants together in small clumps helps to protect them against extremes of heat and cold, periods of drought, and excessive exposure. This is essential in keeping them healthy and happy. If you want a banana grove, plant them in the corner behind your big water tank, give them plenty of organic matter and mulch, plus consistent moisture, and then just leave them alone!!! No hacky hacky trimmy trimmy! ~Much Love!
