Here's John's Epiphone Sheraton. Mmmm. Another semi acoustic subtly telling me that I'm a semi acoustic short in my collection. I am, I am. Must do something about that.
This is elegant; classy and timeless. It's like Sean Connery in a tux making his entrance into the casino etc etc. But it is. Anyway, all the usual good things happened to this guitar; namely custom adjustable Tusq nut, precision levelled set up with very low light action and, later - off camera - the fitting of a gold Les Trem vibrato to this guitar. Lovely thing. The reason I didn't get that on film is that I fitted the Les Trem at home before dispatching this back to John.

Wonderful video. I'm 100 percent on the Tusc replacement nuts. I really like that adjustable one. I've now had them on many guitar's. I do the old half a pencil trick to lower those beautiful factory grooves. In this instance I find the nut slot radius qnd hope it is the same as the fretboard radius. If so, I put sandpaper down on the fretboard amd sand it in a figure 8 to get the right radius. It gets me as low as I can possibly go and still have some adjustability for the seasonal changes. The last one I did was on a 9.25 Squier stratocaster standard. It came so low that it was perfect. What do you think about compensated nuts?

Thank you, i just got one of the sheraton 2 pro,s and the action is a little too high. Love the guitar. Dont like the 10 size strings. Im going to 9,s and lowering the bridge a little. The neck only has a light inward bow. Hope i wont have to adjust it, but i can. Really enjoyed your work, very interesting and helpfull. Im here in Ga. In U.S. cheers and take care.

I’ve just got one of these guitars which I love. However, I’m having a bit of a hard time getting it set up properly. Just wondering what you charge to do a set-up (with one of your nuts etc)? And, whereabouts you are? (I’m in Lincolnshire) Many thanks.

Hi - sorry for the late reply! I charge £135 for my set up which includes new nut, new strings and precision fret levelling as seen in my videos. I have 100% no loss, no damage record on well over 1500 courier sends with my packaging approach and Parcelforce so the risk of loss or damage is negligible if you get the packaging right. I do most of my work via courier; if you're interested in discussing, please email me at samdeeks@gmail.com.

Another job nicely done :) I have a Sheraton Pro II, and have had a few woes with it, it has been back to Epiphone for a fret level, under warranty, due to buzzing on the A string (a little on the low E as well, but not a problem). The A still buzzes a little too much for my liking, but I am a bit of a heavy hitter, so have put up with it. The wisdom imparted to me by Epiphone was "well...guitars with wired bridges do buzz anyway", so why only the A string? It remains a mystery. Lovely guitar though :)

Oh ,hello again! There is that one Thing that I love about Harley Benton Guitars: They are more choiceful on their fretboard-woods ! This Epiphone has a way way too bright choice of wood for it's fretboard ! But good ,recently and lucky enough Epi introduced ebony for their "Custom-models" , which should be a bit darker at least .

Actually I noticed the contrary; the Epis I’ve had have a grayish tone to the rosewood (or whatever Asian equivalent they use). Now I notice browner wood for the fingerboards.

this fretboard looks like cheap maple.. a rosewood would make it look so much better.. they call therse sheraton pro but not as good as a sheraton too.. i would of atleast expected a finger board and rosebood or even ebony fretboard..... the gold finish looks a bit to much like 24k and will wear off so fast its incredible, then they look crap.

Great setup to a great guitar! I like the way you do fret leveling! it just seems more precise and less aggressive which works for me to try and it out :) Can you tell me what are those buttons with the narrow beam and how can i get them? Thanks!

Hi thanks for the kind feedback! My eBook '5 Steps to Guitar Set up Heaven' covers how to make and use the legendary 'Banana' fret levelling technique you're referring to - all with zero- or low-cost tools. You can find out about it here (plus how to buy direct from me if you like): facebook.com/relovedguitars/posts/pfbid0dHJrjwxxRtFcPCGJTvXkBwoReTtoEPxQNq3xKEErD5vivdzftv9vhFfd5gXSVPq9l The little nuts are brass dome nuts; just need to fit between the strings and the tops be above the stirngs (and all be the same size). The technique is very elegant and effective - takes time to get really good at it. I've been doing it this way for about 8 years now and I certainly wouldn't do it any other way. I've also built up a load of experience of 'reading' what the tool is telling me about the condition of the neck.

Love your videos Sam. What would you have had to do if, in the intonation step, the tunematic bridge adjustment reached its limit before correcting the tuning? You said you would be very unhappy. I just bought a 2019 Sheraton and have been happy with it until noticing it is generally sharp at 12th fret and noticeably sharp at fretted notes along the neck. The G and low E adjusters are nearly maxed out. How bad is this?
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
Hi PB Usually first step is to reverse the saddle blocks on the strings that won't reach intonation (assuming that to do so would free up another 2-3mm intonation travel). Failing that I would replace the TOM bridge with a roller bridge as these type of TOM bridges usually have greater front-to-back saddle travel.

Just realized my bridge is on upside down... The screws are pointing downwards and touching the strings as they slope off towards the tailpiece. I'm blaming the set up guy...

There’s no ‘true’ way - people tend to place the screws facing whichever way gives easier access for assisting the saddles for intonation. For some people that’s with the screws facing the nut, for others they’re facing the stop-bar.

What’s a good starting point for bridge height on a semi hollow like this?
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Жыл бұрын
Hi Robert... there's no 'bridge height' that makes any sense as what we're concerned about is the playing action of the strings over 12th (or I prefer last) fret. Many guitars of the same model can have slightly variations in the neck fit angle which changes how high the bridge eventually sits to get the action we want. Personally, on electric guitars my target action is as follows: neck relief 0.2mm, last fret action 1.5 low E last fret, 1.2mm high E last fret and 0.3mm 1st fret action on all strings. This is a target that I know from experience can be set with careful fret levelling on most electric guitars with radii of 9.5" and above. Tighter radii (i.e. 7.25") require a slightly higher playing action to avoid choke-outs on bends. If you're looking for a low action, the bridge height will be constrained by the uneven frets on your neck (and unless they've been very carefully levelled in the past they will be more or less uneven, regardless of the brand or price point of the guitar). Most inexperienced owners lower the bridge until the strings buzz unbearably and then back off a bit - and then live with it. You don't have to be constrained by those uneven frets but the only way to overcome those constraints is by levelling.

Hi, do you sell the adjustable nuts online?
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars Жыл бұрын
Hi Neil I do but at a price i.e. to make it worth doing for me. For the price I pre-shape it exactly for your guitar (for which I need various measurements) so that it will be a 'drop-in' replacement. Contact me at samdeeks@gmail.com to discuss further, many thanks.

Why are you not protecting the pickups and body from filings?
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars
@SamDeeksRelovedGuitars 2 жыл бұрын
Because no ‘filings’ get on the body or the pickups. There is only dust from fret levelling and that wipes off easily. I’ve been doing this 8 years and it just isn’t a problem :-)

They’re good as Sacrificial strings though for use in the set up process. Having said that a friend of mine gigs with them, 1 set per gig and he says they work fine for him.
