We are very proud to announce the start of a recurring monthly series (which will be a regular episode) titled Iconic Song Series. We will pick one Classic McCartney solo track and once a month we will be joined by Allan Kozinn and (eventually) Adrian Sinclair. Co-Authors of the celebrated The McCartney Legacy. By now all followers of our show and McCartney fans in general know that Volume 2 of their book has been announced and scheduled for a 10 December release with pre-orders available now on Amazon.
We were beyond happy that Allan and Adrian were willing to join us for a recurring show on 2Legs. And this topic lends itself well. For the first installment we chose 1970's 'Maybe I'm Amazed' from Paul's first solo album McCartney.
We discuss historical significance, where Paul was at the time (personally and professionally), lyrical meaning, track by track (analysis). (As in number of tracks used to make the record.). It's well known that Paul recorded much of McCartney at home over on Cavendish Avenue. But for what is essentially one of if not his best known solo song Paul recorded this at E.M.I.
These and all the other tiny details we all love to learn about are included in this episode!
We thank Allan and Adrian for joining us for this series and we look forward to doing more!
Suggestions? Let us know or email us!
All The Best!
Andy and Tom

"Paul did all the vocals with one small contribution from Linda" Ah, but let's not forget the charming vocal contribution from daughter Mary half way through, gurgling as she played on the floor of the studio!

If you play “Maybe I’m Amazed”backwards you’ll hear a recipe for a really ripping lentil soup

As to Paul thinking Maybe I'm Amazed was labeled as a 'Lennon-McCartney' track, I believe he was referring to how Paul's songs from McCartney and Ram are still published by Northern Songs. So he's lamenting that he doesn't own the publishing, although with the 56-year rule in U.S. law the copyright is coming back to him on April 17, 2026

Kozinn & Sinclair have reached Lewisohn level for me, where if I see one of them interviewed or a guest on a podcast, I click. (But I’m already subscribed here, so I didn’t have to “find” this one)

How Lewisohn is considered the most reliable source regarding Beatles history is beyond me. In my opinion he is undeniably biased and I am not surprised that Ringo, Paul and George's family do not trust him. The delay in publishing volume two is suspicious. I get the impression that he is waiting for something to happen, maybe someone's death?

It was a great discussion. Love ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ for me as an emotional journey of a man going through changes he didn’t ask for or really understands, but he’s got Linda, TG. Thankyou!

Great discussion, thanks guys! I have a reel to reel of McCartney, and the home recordings actually sound better than Maybe I’m Amazed. The guitar and vocals still sound really direct, but the piano sounds way more immediate in Sing Along Junk.

Ever since I was 15 and got Wingspan I recognized what an incredible piece of work Maybe I'm Amazed is. Love the solos, the lyrics, the stunning vocals. What am amazing start to this fab series.

Personally, I LOVE this song being the first one selected in the Iconic Song Series with Allan Kozinn. (Hi Allan! I can't wait for Adrian to join you guys!) This is actually my favourite solo Paul song. I know Tom and I differ on this (and after watching this episode, I think I differ with Allan too!), but I prefer the live version from Wings over Over America (Live) [2013 Remaster]. Simply, it gives me chills, every single time! But either live or studio, I think we all agree it is an incredible song! In addition, I would like to tell you, each of you provide so much knowledge and experiences that I love and appreciate very much. Thanks for yet another awesome episode! Well done gentlemen!

Nice choice for this great new series theme. However for me personally Every Night is every bit as good as Maybe I’m Amazed. A strangely overlooked jewel of a pop song.

Something that has long fascinated me is that when Paul played Russia in 2004 , he clearly emulated the 1970 studio version of Maybe I'm Amazed, which I don't recall him ever doing so clearly, even at early Wings shows. The Russian concert versions are the Red Square concert (available on commercial DVD and KZfaq) and St. Petersburg concert (available on bootleg DVD). Was he trying to give the Russians a more formal, "faithful" rendition? Or was he maybe trying to give them a more British (and less American) flavored version?

Easily one of McCartney’s greatest achievements as a solo artist. Worthy of a whole podcast discussion. Great to have Allan as a guest to walk through the recording and background. Volume 1 gave me such an appreciation for Paul’s craft and the effort he puts into each song. Looking forward to Volume 2. Thanks guys!

The live version is missing the second guitar counterpoint during the solos which made them so much more interesting. It also smooths out the dynamic range, for example losing that stunning keyboard entry at about 2 min 45 sec after a subdued verse with chopped, damped guitar chords. It's just so much less subtle in every way.

Im gobsmacked that any person with two ears could prefer the studio version over the 1976 live Wings version. Maccas voice is far better on the live and the sing has a proper ending. Studio version just fades out

Paul voice is far better on the live 1976 version of Maybe I'm Amazed. Also the songs ending wasnt there until this time. The weaker 1970 original version just fades out.
