Dancer Paul Draper improvises to music played by accompanist Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson, and to several songs and rhythms played by Pete Seeger. Illustrating the importance of dance to a country's musical life, Seeger shows films of schoolchildren in Samoa, Indonesia, and an East African Village. Rainbow Quest was a television program produced for one series run in 1965 and 1966 by the Advertisers Broadcasting Company for UHF station WNJU-TV in the New York City market. Throughout the show's 39-episode run, writer and curator of American folk songs Pete Seeger hosted many guest musicians. He also himself presented the histories of diverse American and international folk music traditions through spoken and musical segments.

Thank you so much for posting Rainbow Quest! I'm thoroughly enjoying these gems. I knew the show had existed, but except for seeing a few excerpts of individual songs over the years, I hadn't seen any full episodes. This is a real treasure! I noticed two episodes, #25 & #28 are missing. Are you still going to add them or are they lost? I'm stunned that all these programs that you DID post were still in existence! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

No problem! I totally agree this is a amazing treasure of American Folk music by a great man (Pete Seeger). Yes, unfortunately, youtube kept on blocking episode 25, of the Mamou Cajun Band, because it violated something. It has some great music, but unfortunately, if you want to watch it, you have to go to archive.org to see it. I had a lot of copyright issues for some of the other episodes, like episode 34 (Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee), and the episode on Judy Collins. It took me a long time to sort it out, so I hope that it comes handy for everyone out there! As for #28, I believe the episode has been lost, since there are no recordings of it available online, to my knowledge. Anyway, I hope you enjoy them! My other youtube channel, where I posted the first 15 episodes or so, locked me out one day, so if you see some are from that account, that is why.

@@russj.5296 I was indeed wondering why the first 15 were on one channel and the rest on this one. Thanks for explaining and an ENORMOUS thank you for going to all the trouble of clearing the copyright issues! I had been wondering about whether that could be a problem. Glad to hear you have addressed them. I've been spreading the word about them among my friends and acquaintances. I do remember WNJU, and yes it was extremely hard to get a clear signal on it. I wonder how many people actually got to enjoy these programs when they first aired! Thanks again!

@@russj.5296 IMO, Peggy Seeger blocked the release of Ep 28 because as a militant feminist of the period, she felt it wasn't a good look for her 2 sisters to have supporting roles on her half brother's show. I believe her 2 sisters died young, so Peggy took the opportunity to seize control of that master. episode 25 is on a manufactured DVD produced by Shanachie records

Never saw this dance flavored episode before! I wonder whether Pete ever included squaredancers, New England contradancers or Appalachian flatfooters on the program? Brother Mike Seeger and dance-ethnographer Ruth Pershing did their "Talking Feet" flatfooting & clogging documentary more than a decade later... now at Smithsonian folkways.

Thank you for putting these episodes of Rainbow Quest on KZfaq. I didn't know about the existence of Rainbow Quest until one of my friends and partners-in-crime at the local Irish Music Sessions told me about them. We meet regularly every Sunday afternoon and I play piano at the local Sessions. Sometimes I play either bass or piano on Sunday morning with the band at my church. My mother was a music teacher who began teaching me how to play the piano when I was six. Besides the Irish Sessions and the church services, I also play my acoustic string bass with a local old time folk music group and for the regular dances of a local contra dance society. My mother and the rest of her family weren't quite sure what to think of Seeger and were suspicious of him because he was so "liberal" politically, socially, and economically. However, my father was to the left hand side of the Democrats politically, socially, and economically. He was the parent who introduced me to Seeger's music and encouraged me to listen to him. Although my father's favorite de-composer was Ludwig von Beethoven, my father also like to listen to Jimmie Rodgers--The Singing Brakeman--as well as Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. No my father was not a musician.

One thing which I really like about watching Rainbow Quest is that a lot of Seeger's guests were just empty, meaningless names to me before I watched these episodes of Rainbow Quest. I had heard of them but I had not heard them playing and singing and performing. They are not meaningless names to me any more.
