Episode 47 Inverter ANL fuse install and load test

6 жыл бұрынAdding ANL Fuses to the Tigerclaw 1500w pure sine wave inverter, and also a load test on a 1500 watt quartz heater. i toss a 300 a fuse into a 2 gauge wire (pos) to TEST a load . the proper fuse/wire for this test should be about 200-250A fuse. for the batteries.My battery Red power wire is a 0AWG rated at 300amps according to its printing on the casing. Please use the chart below to figure out your rating/wire size for your loads.
my peak load on the inverter is 3000 watt, thus this max rating test with a300 amp fuse.
The fuse rating is "generally" (watts/volts) x 1.25, example: lets say 1500 watts normal run usage, so 1500 divided by the volts (12v dc in my case) is 125, now x1.25 = 156.25 ,
I Personally just use a 10:1 rule of thumb ratio so 100 watt 1 amp fuse etc.. so 3000 watt load on my peak is 300 amp, give or take a few. i tested it with a 150 on a 1500watt load and the moment it went over 1500 watts the fuse popped, so it calculates close enough for me. but for those that need official charts, scroll down below the links.

The fuse size should be based upon the amperage draw of whatever you are running, not the watt rating of the inverter SIZE YOUR FUSES ACCORDINGLY!
A general rule for any Anneaaled CU Wire, also those American Wire Gauge charts are for chassis wiring. and they are always downgraded. stranded vs solid core, voltage drop, temperatures, thickness, thermal conductivity all play roles. its such a short run, its totally capable. those ratings are just a rule of thumb. the marking on the cable will display its "rated limits" just don't use cheap a$$ cables.

Not sure where you got your wire sizing guide numbers from....they seem overrated/over inflated. E.g. 2/0 AWG copper stranded cable (i.e. ~67-70mm squared) is usually rated up to ~280-290A (@90 degrees insulation) MAX, or even lower according to some. I have never seen 2/0AWG rated at 400A. Running close to 400Amps through 2/0 AWG cable will cause immense heat.

If you have an aftermarket car audio system. Do not connect the led fuse holder under the hood. You’d want to connect it to your secondary battery if you have one. Since the amplifier(s) draw the most power that’s where you would want to measure for voltage drop.

Thank you When you said;300 amp ANL fuse I paused video went into O Riley's and ordered it for $7.50.with a 24 hour delay between Salt lake City and Denver I'm using this afternoon the 140 amp battery isolator ( placement for now was going before a 2 gauge wire feed with at least ten feet of wire through firewall before going into a storage batteries system with upgrade s to my inverter system starting at 1000 watt's Then add another 300 amp fuse from my additional 100 AH solar panel and 500 watt converter? I hope that I'm correctly understanding these lessons

you may want to downsize your fuses if your max is 1000 watts, mine is 1500/3000, so redneck math of 10a for 100 hence 300a for 3000 is the MAX rating. my fuses are direct between the inverter and the battery, I too have a isolator on off switch that is direct, no fusing internal, like a bus bar you can move off or on, it is on my negative battery terminal from the inverter. figure out what the max load you draw from your inverter and size it from there, if its 2000 watts, and your BATTERY size cables are large you can run a 200 amp fuse, test it, get some multipacks on ebay, they are cheap, a few sacrificial blows to test your range. i have 900amphours in my battery array so my max load is 300 amps. yours may vary depending on your max load and battery amphours, remember cable length also can drop the voltages too if its a long run. -- the fuse rating is generally (watts/volts) x 1.25, example: lets say 1500 watts normal run usage, so 1500 divided by the volts (12v dc in my case) is 125, now x1.25 = 156.25 , I just use a 10:1 rule of thumb ratio so 100 watt 1 amp fuse etc.. so 3000 watt load on my peak is 300 amp, give or take a few. i tested it with a 150 on a 1500watt load and the moment it went over 1500 watts the fuse popped, so it calculates close enough for me.

Great video! i got a question regarding the AWG 2 cable. Its rated 300amps. But when I look it up on any awg chart online..it states that awg 2 can only support 94amps. And only a 4/0 wire can support 300amps.

@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration I looked at the digital fuse block link. They are 200 and 300 fuses. Is there anything more in line for 30 and 40, maybe 150 amps with that cool readout feature that you've seen? I am setting up a solar array, yup

My big fuse is the anl from battery to inverter. Due to my amp hour range and number of batteries while parallel do have some capable amp hours (900) my inverter is a tigerclaw pure sign wave 1500/3000 startup load. I have several other msw inverters from 400 to 2500w. I have three 150w 12v panels on my roof now controlled by my hqst pwm controller. Each of My solar panels have mc4 in line fuses at 15amp by renogy.

Chris, i have a 1000w pure sine inverter in my RV that powers the refrigerator. I foolishly bought a new battery and installed it backwards. Do you think the inverter is junk? It has an ANL fuse

Fuse would have popped or the inverter has polarity protection as most do to prevent that exact issue

depends on the peak load, my peak load on the inverter is 3000 watt, thus 300 amp fuse, the fuse rating is generally (watts/volts) x 1.25, example: lets say 1500 watts normal run usage, so 1500 divided by the volts (12v dc in my case) is 125, now x1.25 = 156.25 , I just use a 10:1 rule of thumb ratio so 100 watt 1 amp fuse etc.. so 3000 watt load on my peak is 300 amp, give or take a few. i tested it with a 150 on a 1500watt load and the moment it went over 1500 watts the fuse popped, so it calculates close enough for me.

Hi. I ordered this distribution block for my car amplifier. Does the voltage indicator LED light up during load or all the time if terminals are connected? Do you think this will discharge the car battery when car is not in use because of the voltage LED?

Not at all it only uses milivolts to show the voltage. I removed ky Solar feed for over a werk one time while doing battery swaps and never had any issues. Enjoy!

Improper grounding or you have a poop unit. Is the fuse in? All connections tight? Just ground the little wire to metal anywhere

@@ChrisEdwardsRestoration Everything is fine. I was wondering if there is a chance of battery discharge due to lighting of the voltage indicator. I understand it consumes very miniscule amount of power but just wanted to be sure in case i leave the car parked for a month or so.

From what i have read ANL fuses arent' for inverter install that they require A T type fuse must be used .

Not exactly , make sure your wire diameter can support the wattage. otherwise it would get hot and possibly melt/burn

Chris Edwards that would mean I need 0 gauge wire. The inverter company tells you to use 8 gauge. So confused.

No. You are basing your math on the wrong factor. The fuse size should be based upon the amperage draw of whatever you are running, not the watt rating of the inverter. If the watt draw of, say an induction cooktop plugged into your inverter were drawing 2000w then yes the fuse would be 200A

well, a 4AWG WIRE can handle 100AMP up to 3M max ...your fuse is 200A it means your fuse is just a decoration the wire will burn and the fuse standstill :( well heres the equation wire size =load in amp X 1.50AMP fuse size=load in amp X 1.25AMP good luck

the display wire is just a ground, it gets its power from the main line, so to the negative cable.

Yes. Uses very little current to show battery voltage. Been running for years now. No issues
