Welcome to More Christ. We seek to bring some of the world's most interesting and insightful guests to discuss life's central and abiding questions.
In this seventy ninth episode in a series of discussions, I'm joined by Dr Martin Shaw.
Martin is regarded as one of the most outstanding new teachers of the mythic imagination. Visiting fellow at Schumacher college in the U.K., he has also devised and lead the Oral Tradition course at Stanford university in the U.S.
He is the author of the award winning; A Branch from The Lightning Tree, Snowy Tower, Scatterlings, Smoke Hole, and other classics. Martin now leads a bustling schedule of conferences, gatherings, and wilderness retreats over several continents. I’m so interested in these new Christian thinkers, I had an experience of conversion very similar to this…helped along the way by Pageau…really resonate with Martin Shaw…I’m attending an Orthodox Church also…

Great, rich conversation, thanks so much! A cradle Catholic, I fell away, took drugs, was saved, explored many paths, and was part of a Sufi Community, but always with Christ in my core. I struggled to meld my connection to nature and stories and magic with the structure of the Church. I find that Liturgy, language and beauty are such a vital part of the old Faith that calls and guides me home! I could listen to hours of this conversation….🙏🌿🍃🍂🌻🍂🍃⭐️🌿⭐️⭐️✨✨✨

I love the phrase "the luminous present" reminds me of RH Thomas's poem The Bright Field "Life is not hurrying on to a receding future, nor hankering after an imagined past. It is the turning aside like Moses to the miracle of the lit bush, to a brightness that seemed as transitory as your youth once, but is the eternity that awaits you."

Martin definitely brought a fresh angle to our stale banalities of life in modernity - and now he promises to do the same to the sacred pilgrimage with and to Yeshua. I am so glad he decided he must make this journey that is full of exciting new challenges that he won't shy away from. I look forward to bumping into him every now and again along the road.....Thank you Brothers!

Thanks for that conversation. I enjoy singing English folk songs, and playing English/Irish/Scots tunes, and there's a wealth of story and tradition there, too. Whilst at times it's explicitly Christian, I've never wanted to let go of the more pagan or 'everyday' elements because I hold them dear, and it's interesting to consider that those traditional songs and themes may speak into the Trinity in some way. It's something to ponder on.

The best film version of the gospel is Pasolini's Gospel according to Matthew. He really captures the wild,unpredictable, challenging nature of Jesus. No "gentle Jesus meek and mild" there!
