Learn how to check for a meniscus injury in your knee at home using these 3 tests we’ve modified and made really simple.
Meniscus problems often cause swelling, stiffness, and pain soon after they happen. Often healthcare professionals like surgeons, physical therapists, physiotherapists, physicians and more will recommend surgery when it can be avoided!
Here at El Paso Manual Physical Therapy, we help people everyday with meniscus problems. They escape surgery, injections and medications and get back to being healthy, active and mobile again.
In this video we cover the meniscus test you can do at home to self-diagnose the problem, but keep in mind that if you want a legitimate diagnosis you need to visit your doctor and likely have imaging done...like an MRI. That will confirm or deny you’ve got a meniscus tear in your knee.
If you do have a meniscus tear, your doctor will either refer you to an orthopedic surgeon for a surgery consult or to a physical therapist to begin doing rehab exercises.
Keep in mind that if you end up going to physical therapy, most physiotherapy clinics are set up to help patients that have just had surgery...so if you’re looking to PREVENT surgery, you need to do some research and find the physical therapy clinic that is right for you.
We recommend a manual-based physical therapy clinic. The physical therapists there will likely have the right training to diagnose and treat someone looking to avoid surgery, injections and medications.
If you’re not able to get to a physical therapy clinic, we have created a 100% online program for you called the 28 Day Knee Health & Wellness Boost Program.
Dr. David has packed his knowledge on how to heal knee problems naturally into the videos of the program. You can follow along on the exercises and teachings in the videos to learn the best exercises and stretches to improve the health of your knee problems. Even if its cartilage or meniscus problems.

Hey JackyChannel! Sorry to hear that your knee can't extend all the way :-( Locking is a sign of a more serious meniscus problem... Have you had any imaging done like an MRI? All is not lost yet, we've helped many people with meniscus tears and knee locking like yours. Most of the time they can get rid of the knee locking, any swelling and pain and get back to walking normal. Some of our meniscus clients have gotten back to us to let us know they're jogging and weight lifting problem free. You really should consider getting some sort of professional help though. That way you don't get worse in the meniscus and end up needing knee surgery for sure.

I fought to get an MRI because many fixtures told me that my X-rays just showed arthritis. I have extreme pain at all times in the inner knee by the patella. I had fluid and blood removed from both knees. I feel sacks behind my knees. I previously had a bakers cyst burst. That was painful. I finally received my MRI and it showed arthritic changed, torn meniscus, shredded ACL, broken tibia behind patella and tibia shift. I was desperate for relief. I came up of your videos and now I’m mostly pain free and I don’t need to take the pain meds any longer. Occasionally it “pops” out and I just do the exercises and wringing motion of my thigh and I get relief! Thank you….thank you…thank you!!!

Hi. Yes this does help my knee. Certain movements in say, a Pilates class, are not for me, but because everyone else is doing them, you feel left out😂 and by the end of class you know you’ve made a wrong move. What’s strange is the next day I hiked 3 miles and was not hurting at all during the hike, but later I was limping. So very strange this comes and goes.

I wanted to say THANK YOU! I had a grade 2 degenerative meniscus, and chondromalacia. I've been focusing on glutes instead of quads and feel the difference! I just signed up for your program. - Update 1 / 10 days - Knee pain has reduced by 40%, along with the clicking. - Update 2 / 20 days - Positive: clicking and pain stabilized, no bad flare-ups. Negative: still not able to do more than 1000 steps per day, still mild-moderate pain even with so little steps. - Update 3 / 1 month - Pain reduces at 2/10. Knee feels lighter. Able to do up to 1100 steps with little pain. However got a flare-up this week and I feel a bit clicking again but not painful. I'm kinda stuck at this point and also forgot to do some of the stretches since starting the program😢Also, I haven't managed to successfully isolate the glutes, I'm still using hamstrings now and then. - Update 4 / 3 months - Pain has reduced a lot in contrast to the beginning, clicking as well. Able to do up to 1300 steps per day without meniscus pain, only patellar pain. Exercising the glutes daily is impossible, it puts too much strain on the muscle, so be careful with that. At the 2 month point I was stuck not progressing, so I had to add quad exercises, due to my completely inactive quads and adductors. That helped me progress. The foot exercises of the program have caused me foot pain, so please also be careful with how much you exercise these body parts. Do not do them daily, it is too much for the body. You cannot count just on glutes for walking, eventually you have to strengthen all other structures.

Thank you so much! As so many others have said - you explain everything so clearly it's so helpful to fully understand what's going on on there - when no other 'professionals' want to really help us out 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️ It's taken me weeks of searching what's going on with my knee - after seeing an NHS physio who did two movement tests on my knee - regardless of me telling him that I'm hypermobile 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ He should have been able to see from the way I walked up to him that I'm wonky! He just gave me 4 exercises and sent me on my way.... no imagery, nothing 🤨 Armed with your knowledge I'm calling them back and requesting a proper check out! Thanks so much for really caring 😊 I'm going to sign up to you course and recommend you to everyone!! 😁

Your explanation of purpose of tailgate swing has been tremendously helpful. I was really limited in my ability to walk, as I had been "powering through" keeping moving. Basically compensating with other muscles, bearing weight on my "good knee" and doing all sorts of weird adaptations to keep going. Any time standing up was excruciating. It caused much grief. Just a few days of STOPPING the things thar hurt,, and doing tailgate swings EXTENSIVELY (,yesterday 4 hours spread over the day) resulted in much reduction of pain. I am working on glute strength, and actually can walk 20 minute without pain (judiciously taking steps to reduce impact, and activate glutes). Two decades ago, a PT said "you walk with your quads" but I had no idea what that meant, and zero information about the results. I cannot say enough "thank you" or give you enough accolades. THIS is information that would be imperative for many of our chronic conditions that disable many of the population. Weak glutes affect so much of our every day lives..... Thank you, thank you, thank you

About 3 weeks ago, I noticed a intermittent pain in my right knee on the medial side, especially after my yoga sessions. And a week after this there was much pain and inflammation which forced me to rest. However, whenever I did move about a lot on pressure would fall on my left leg and eventually developed pain in the left medial too. I came across one of your videos, doctor and tried the tailgate swings and found it so helpful. I have a bit of resistance while extending my legs at times. The first time I did these swings, I got a whole lot of relief. Continuing the exercises! Thanks a lot! 😊🙏

My meniscus started acting up a few months ago. I'm leaving on a 3-month road trip so I cannot schedule surgery, which probably wouldn't be a great idea anyway from what I'm hearing. Two of the exercises in this video helped me. The one where you kick your legs back and forth for 5 minutes. And especially the one where you curve your foot inward and slide it back on the carpet to straighten out your tibia. I'll be doing those everyday of my road trip. We'll see how it goes. Thanks for posting this video. I'm very grateful for it.

Hey Sherry, we are so sorry to hear that you have had such awful pain 😔 We're glad to hear that you are starring these exercises though! We would suggest to begin with the smallest range of motion and the lowest intensity. As you feel stronger, you can gradually increase both the range of motion and intensity. It’s best to do these exercises every day throughout the day. Aim to tire out the muscle without losing form or control. Consistency is key. Always avoid working through pain; soreness and mild discomfort are normal, but pain is not. Great video thanks! Your videos are always so helpful and I've recommended your channel to a few people. I am positive for all the tests in this video. I injured my knee in 1992 but it didn't start to hurt until I stopped doing sport, mainly horse riding, in about 2009. In 2019 I had an MRI that showed medial meniscus tear plus early arthritis. Your videos are helping me strengthen my knee again. Tailgate swings seem to help and your advice about strengthening glutes and realigning the leg bones has been very helpful. The alignment thing seems to be a part of my problem. I've had a knee offloader since 2019 which was helping relieve the knee pain but I think the strengthening exercises I started 10 months ago are helping more. Thank you again for your great videos.

I had an xray, and the surgeon thinks I don't have a tear, but the start of one. I was doing the Brazilian butt lift, and hyper extended my foot, and, perhaps did a twist motion. I hurt both knees...one is pretty much healed, but the leg,in which I broke my ankle, is painfful, but only epwhen sitting in the car, or trying to sleep. I've been crawling around the garden, digging, planting, and turning over the soil for mulching it, and, I think if I had a tear, I would not be able to do all that work for several hours. I appreciate this video, and after the Father's day party, I WILL DO THE EXERCISES...AWESOME VIDEO. I love to walk, so I need these knees! Thank a you for your time.

But OMG i found this video & the moment i did 1st inward movement of the leg exercise i heard a pop & by the time i finished it start 2nd exercise I already felt a sense of relief & able to walk without pain. Hopefully now I believe i can stretch my surgery till next year till that time i'll be doing these 3 set of exercise. Thank you sir.

This helped me so much. My knee was so stiff. Once I realised that taking TOO much rest does the complete opposite of helping strengthen my meniscus tear, it was a game changer. The fire hydrant did burn a bit in my knee but it was bearable. I’ve been doing this everyday for a while now and it’s really helped with the pain and stiffness. I think I’m going to need to follow up with the 28 day programme.

I went to a ortho doctor today, having suffered from Knee effusion and grade 1 lateral meniscus and ACL tear of my left knee. The hopeless doctor didn't explain anything detailly, he seems in uninterested and busy with himself, what a shame, I don't want to visit him ever again. He just extracted out some fluid from my knee which gave me great pain relief 😅.

Hello! About 3-4 months ago, I had a strange discomfort in the back of my knees. I then experienced a definite soreness both behind and and in the medial part of my knee. I was seen by a doctor, who said she’d order an ultrasound and X-ray of both knees. That was December, and I’m booked in for Feb 5th for the that work up. I’ve been seen by a physiotherapist who thinks I have either OA, or a torn/or irritated meniscus, so I was given some stretches, which have I guess helped. She had also seen my pronation. I started searching online, and found your KZfaq’s. Specifically, thos on meniscus and OA tests, as well as pain relief, and exercises. They were such a help. Thank you. I was wondering that since I’m not sure whether it’s meniscus or OA, would the 28 day knee health program be better, or the knee arthritis program? If I do the 28 day knee health program if I just have arthritis, will I be ok with just that? BTW, did I say thank you for your approach to achieving health to the joint by dressing the mechanical issues. I’d way prefer to work at those things rather than surgery or drugs! I wish your clinic was in Canada!

Good-day doc. First-off I want to thank you for your very helpful and informative videos. Honestly you're one of the best resources that I've found and am having some good success with your excercises. Im at 9 weeks post-injury and my question is that, is it normal for me to not be able to fully extend my leg/knee totally yet, like I can with my good leg at this point? My knee has been getting better with each week that passes, but recently it's to the point where I'm wondering if I might have what's called a bucket-handle tear, which may require surgery. I've never really had much pain, clicking/ popping or catching/ locking. And I've also avoided any anti-inflammatory drugs or icing the knee. I've felt that letting the knee heal naturally was the best way to go. I've only had alot of stiffness and inability to stretch out or extend the knee fully. There's still a little bit of swelling so that might be the reason that I can't fully extend it yet. Your reply/feedback would be greatly appreciated sir. Have a blessed day!

There is still pain but it feels so much better just doing it once. Where have you been all my knee problem life?? Hi, brilliant channel for information. The bending of knees for a few minutes eased up the stiffness👍 I had a meniscus tear a few years ago and been fine except for last 2 weeks as been having some pain were the tear was, now removed 20% of it gone. And the same time having a bit of pain on the other knee. I did however started walking more for exercise as started a new job and wanted to be fitter. Also the right knee feels as if I'm kneeling on glass. I have had this feeling before and it goes but this time it hasn't for 3 or so weeks. My knees are creaky which is nothing new. Hello Doc. I just got an MRI as advised by the ortho here. The results show a longitudinal tear of the posterior horn of medial meniscus (with minimal effusion) of the left knee. Way back in 2006 I had a meniscus tear of the same left knee (due to a minor motorcycle accident) and the ortho had suggested exercises which I had and after few months it was fine. After 18 years I have had this. Unfortunately I do not have the old MRI report to correlate both of them. However, I have been in a desk job all these years. I have been pretty active since 2017, majorly with regular brisk walking, yoga, and some strengthening exercises since 2023. Can I cure it with the exercises like it did before? I can walk properly, but when I sit for a long time (I have a desk job) the knee joint irritates me. I feel the need to extend it and feels a bit better or even stand for few mins. Hope you can answer my question Doc. Eagerly waiting for your reply.

After watching this, I'm pretty sure I've got an injured meniscus. I have an appointment with an orthopedic doctor in about a month, but I will start these exercises. Question: Can walking with a cane cause any problems? I can walk around the house and at work easily because I can sit if my leg gets stiff, but going to the grocery store is another thing! I don't know if it makes any difference, but I can straighten my leg with no problem, but bending it back beyond 90 degrees is beyond a 10 on the pain scale.
