Interesting how many people in the US are doing this now, but all hand stitching is popular. I am 70 and have been stitching more than 60 years. I was taught as a child to sew hexagons into Grandmother's Flower garden quilts but we did not use paper templates. If you were a beginner you were taught to mark the quarter inch seams. Recently I tried hexiforms, they don't come out like the paper but I would never use that as a quilt, too stiff. I also tried the technique that Emma Jones KZfaqr does where you put batting and a larger hexigon and sew it around and that has been my fav. I love any quilt as you go technique.

I have been making quilts for 52 years, and never tried EPP, after watching a friend doing it, I finally decided to give it a try, your tips have been very helpful, especially the one with the sandpaper. I don't know why I waited so long to give this a try, I have always loved hand sewing, I guess I thought it would be hard to do, but it isn't, and it's very relaxing to do. great video! TFS! a couple tips that might help... do not pull your papers out till you have all sides secured to another hexi (or any shape) and if you do a nicker knot at the beginning and end the corners are very secure and wont come out after washing. ALSO! I do a nicker knot half way (or more than one per side if larger) just in case years later one come undone it will have extra knots to keep the shape together

Thanks, Judith! I'll have to look up what a nicker knot is. It sounds very helpful!
@JudithBrummett

@@aquiltingtale6230 it's just a small VERY! secure knot using both the working end and tail end of the thread. Wrap the working end one time around needle as usual then use the tail (coming from needle eye) to wrap a second loop and pull through. its tiny but mighty lol.

Really enjoyed your video. I am a beginner and yet to sew my many 1 inch Hexies. My project is to make a memory table runner for my daughter in law who lost her dear dad suddenly at the earlier part of this year. Its a surprise. Its mainly fussy cutting birds, which he loved and a good mixture of animals. They live in the Jurassic part of Devon and so i have included some great Dinosaur material, butterflies, fish you name it. Bees were a favourite too. Just hope i can work out the right pattern i want to do. Thanks again x

Thanks for the great video! The sandpaper is 400 (see the big 400 printed on it) :) 600 is a little better. Also your iron might have been recalled due to a faulty connection between the cord and iron. I know this as I had the exact one and Amazon sent me a notice to send it back.

Ha! As my grandpa used to tell me, "If it was a snake, it would have bit you already." 😅 Thanks for the warning about the iron. I just bought it this summer at Joann's, so hopefully the issue is fixed. I'll make sure not to leave it unattended though. I've heard of mini irons catching fire.

Just wanted to say that you should press, not iron, your fabric. Ironing can distort your fabric, while pressing the fabric will not. Also, I find that a 3/8 inch edge is easier for me to baste. I am a beginner like you, but I am older and have arthritis issues. Also, it’s easier for me to use the rotary cutter than the scissors when I cut. I enjoyed your video! 😃
@aquiltingtale6230
@aquiltingtale6230 10 ай бұрын
Thanks, Judy! Yes, ironing back and forth is a hard habit for me to break, and I do it absent-mindedly sometimes, even when I know pressing is the way to go. Good catch. Thanks for sharing tips to help with arthritis too. I hope you're enjoying EPP as much as I am!

Hi Judy. I’m returning to quilting after a 15 yr absence. So many new products. But I know the difference between pressing and ironing. It’s common to watch videos where demonstrators use the wrong process. ePP istotally new to me. Found a cute pin cushion using that process that I’m anxious to try. Anyway, thanks for making the correction/observation. Grandma Mary

Very helpful video! I had always wanted to try it but felt intimidated. You are a great teacher I finally understand how the gluing works. Btw I love the colors you chose. I’m trying to guess the weight of the hexagon, would poster board from Dollar Tree work or is that too thick? I was thinking of using my cutting machine to cut the hexagons with. Thanks for a great video.
@aquiltingtale6230
@aquiltingtale6230 9 ай бұрын
Hi, Lucy! Thank you for the lovely feedback. The hexagons I use feel thinner than poster board (more like scrapbooking paper or a light cardstock), but I would think poster board thickness would be okay. You might punch a hole in the centers to help remove them, because poster board is stiffer. I wouldn't go much thicker than poster board because there might be a bigger gap between the wrong sides of the glued seams, so that might impact the shape when you remove the papers. Let me know if you try poster board and how it works out. EPP is such a relaxing, satisfying way to quilt. I hope you love it!
