Poena Cullei gets worse when you realize that the snakes, dogs, roosters, and monkeys suffered the same fate as the convict being punished, so it wasn’t just barbaric, but it also involved horrific cruelty to animals.

It's not easy holding out much hope for humanity when, historically, depraved, sadistic cruelty seems to be the ONE thing our species seems to have a consistent talent for. Atrocities like these, The Brazen Bull, The Blood Eagle, The Spider, The Pear of Anguish, The Rack, The Judas Cradle... Our own history is enough to cast doubt on the possibility of extraterrestrial visitors, because if there WERE some race of super advanced, otherworldly visitors keeping tabs on our planet, wouldn't the horrors they've witnessed left them duty-bound to burn us out of the stars long ago...?

Well we are animals so there will always be some people who do harm to other beings If an alien analysed humanity, however, he wouldn't just see bad things because there are also so many good things humans do, making them in some aspects superior to animals, who just follow their instincts and have no empathy We sometimes see bad in humanity and sometimes we see good, it all depends on our view

Adding another layer of barbarism, methods like this were also likely used on falsely accused and otherwise innocent victims. If you were a political opponent, chose not to follow a religion, target of jealousy, etc.

Speaking of torture devices in ancient China, in the "Lienü Zhuan", there's the story of the last king of the pre-imperial dynasty of Shang (XII century BC) and his "favourite" Da Ji, where it's mentioned a torture device developed by order of the king, called the "Pao Ge", which consisted in a fat-spreaded red-hot bronze pillar that the unfortunate had to climb in order to avoid falling on hot charcoal or fire and burning to death

The idea of putting someone in a sack with the animals is considered to be more of a myth than truth, aside from the fact that it'd be difficult to get all involved into one bag, there's also the problem of acquiring the claimed animals, which have varied over the years of people re-telling of this tale, in reality, it's probably more likely they were just put in a sack and thrown in the water without animals, which makes you wonder about the concept of being "given the sack" when losing a job... :S
