As a non drummer, I have so much admiration for Steve G here. Ever since I first heard this version I was sold on him. It's as if he plays ever so slightly behind the beat? And the way he is so in sync with Eric (and vice versa) - espy at the start of the main solo when Eric hits that note!

I find this the most enjoyable version of this tune EC has ever presented, in no small measure due to Steve Gadd. He finds the exact right feel for the Reggae groove that dives the song, with accents always right where they need to be to assist the other players. And the section of the solo, where it's obvious EC and Steve are locked in cosmic sync (EC turning smiling as his notes drop perfectly into Steve's groove) is just a thing of beauty. The debates about guitar players will never end, but its like apples and oranges. Some people prefer flashy technical stuff and think that makes someone "great". Others, myself included, hear music differently. I like less flash and more feel. I don't judge the making of music like an olympic sport. Faster and more complex do not equate to "better" for me. It is two totally different views of playing and how to approach the making of music. It's all about personal preference and I prefer EC.

The bassline in this masterpiece is tremendous. I don’t know where and when this live version was originaly unleashed by Clapton, but since it was has been the best version of this song ever made. In terms of guitar solo and bassline there is no comparsion with any other interpretation, far beyond the original by Marley. The only way to do a comparsion it is between the own versions of Eric Clapton, for me Hyde Park is the best one.
@1Ma9iN8tive3 жыл бұрын
I think this version and Bob Marleys version on The Legend Album are two different songs that should not be compared just because they’re the same song Reason Eric Clapton is an amazing guitarist who made this version his live song legend Yes the baseline is fantastic - but the drummer in Eric’s band is the best thing going in the whole song - even greater than Eric’s solo and I’m a guitarist too Eric’s bass player and drummer are brilliant - but in this song they are mere servants to Marleys creative geniuses in his band But Bob Marley deserves every credit fir being the creator of this song with his rhythm section- the baseline in his version is untouchably unique and genius and the drumlins in the original is mythical Eric’s solo in this version is invincibly one of his most inspired and it alone sets Erics version apart from all versions But there has been no solo on the planet by any guitarist that can outshine any song Bob Marley wrote What I think is happening here is three things 1) Bob Marley and the Wailers legacy will live forever in eternity 2) His song I shot the Sheriff will be copied by everyone forever 3) Eric Clapton is a legend in his own right and will be celebrated in rock and blues to the end of days - his style will be copied by all ... That’s all ... Respect Jah Rastafari

Would have enjoyed hearing Clapton on a Les Paul once in a while to see what he could do with it, but that's a whole other conversation! LOL.

Designed in the 80's to minimize noise as well as string pull (non magnetic), the Lace Sensors were an attempt to make a top of the line professional single coil pickup that would deliver a vintage Fender sound without the 60 cycle hum often associated with it. Back in the day, they were used by a lot of artists, including Clapton, Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck.

The infallible Steve Gadd gets the shake off by Clapton. Then Clapton gives him a look like, "What the heck are you doing" all the time smiling but you can tell he's peeved (especially in light of playing for that crowd!). I guarantee, Clapton wouldn't have shaken God off like that and would have come out of his own solo early. :)

+Desert Child Please, you drum experts, help me out here: @ 2:53 I HEAR a flam, but I don't SEE mr. Gadd play one.. Are we being mislead here as in too many 'live' registrations??
