Watched this guy play in Rhode Islands Providence Civic Center in 1984. He played for over three hours. We also did a lot of the stuff he is singing about especially during this song. LOL. We ended up getting pulled over by the coolest cop in Nahua N.H. and asked us where we are coming from. Told him Providence R.I. He asked us what going on down in Providence. I replied Eric Clapton Show. The cop says F#### me! Eric Clapton just played in Providence and I had to work! Asked me what songs he played and of course I mentioned this song with an ear to ear grin. He spoke with us a little longer about the show and then wished us a goodnight and said get outta here. As he was walking back to his police cruiser he was still talking to himself saying F### Eric Clapton played tonight and here I'm having to work! Like I said he was the coolest cop EVER!

This song was written by the late, great JJ Cale, as well as _After Midnight._ JJ is Clapton's hero. The success of these two songs, along with Lynyrd Skynyrd recording _Call Me The Breeze,_ *which was also written by JJ Cale,* brought JJ out of obscurity, and allowed him to tour as it suited him, because he received royalties from other artists' recording his songs. He moved to Los Angeles and lived in a trailer with no phone. Eric sought JJ out to produce an album with him, but they ended up recording it together: _The Road To Escondido._ ❤
@jackstraw67607 ай бұрын
You were almost there. JJ Cale also wrote Call Me The Breeze. If it weren't for Jj Cale none of us would know Eric Clapton or would remember him as that guy in that band with Ginger Baker.
@Robin-Cale177 ай бұрын
@@jackstraw6760 Eric Clapton was famous long before JJ Cale. JJ wanted it that way. He did not like the spotlight. When Eric recorded _After Midnight,_ everyone wanted to know who JJ Cale was. He had tried to get _After Midnight_ recorded, but he got turned down several times. JJ Cale was from Oklahoma and is credited with "effecting" the "Tulsa Sound," which you can really hear when he plays _Anyway The Wind Blows_ with Clapton, Derek Trucks and Doyle Bramhall II. ❤
@jackstraw67607 ай бұрын
@@Robin-Cale17 you know all this because Eric Clapton got famous recording JJ Cales songs. If he didn't Eric Clapton would be that guy from Cream that played guitar with Delaney & Bonnie. You tried proving me wrong by regurgitating all you know about Clapton & JJ Cale. You were 100% correct about JJ Cale. It was a mutually beneficial relationship. They both needed each other.

He is in ecstasy -- the literal meaning of which (it's from the ancient Greek) isn't just "super-turbocharged-happy," but -- this is from Britannica -- "(from Greek ekstasis, 'to stand outside of or transcend [oneself]'), in mysticism, the experience of an inner vision of God or of one’s relation to or union with the divine." He's being *inspired*, which also has a meaning that goes far beyond what we usually associate w/the term: under the "'immediate influence of God or a god,' especially that under which the holy books were written" [source: etymonline]. He's in touch with the super-human and the super-natural, and it surely shows, and we're hearing every bit of it. End of lecture. Enjoy the transcendent music.

Such an amazing performance. Nathan's bass lines are fantastic and keep the band together, and I think one of the biggest changes to EC concerts in more recent times is Paul Carrack, such a talented guy and a great vocalist especially on the now stalwart Joe Cocker song at concerts 'High Time We Met'. It's ironic in a way that most people think this is an EC song, and don't realise the influence of J.J. Cale on EC music in general. All the band look so happy as well....and laughing at the crowd's 'crazy' dancing. This is definitely one song to download and savour!

He and the band had decades to polish it. I got caught in the church auditorium playing the keyboard with the pastors son on base, the other on drums back in 1976 playing this, he wasn't pleased! Ray, if you read this, thumbs up!

Probably the best guitarist since Hendrix we lost him , Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker , to see the happiness in in the faces of the audience says it all

I like Clapton more than Hendrix, but I agree with the sentiment

Saw him five times between 80 and 2010. Brought my kids to his shows and raised them right. Doesn't get much better in this world.

The man's been sober for decades, has opened rehabilitation centers all over the place which he constantly works to fund, and can still end a show with an entire audience shouting "COCAINE!!!"

my favorite clapton solos are further on up the road in the last waltz and his work on the pros and cons of hitchhiking with waters.

I find it amazing that some of these guys care actually better in there 60's and even 70's than they were 30 years. This is be best version I've heard, and the keyboard guy is amazing

You're the only one that thinks he's underrated. Stop fucking around cause he is highly respected in the music industry

@@cock1846 underrated in an overused word in youtube. anybody wants to express their admiration to a musician they like, they call him/her underrated. Nathan East is a musicians musician. He plays with big names in the industry. He is definitely not underrated.

Underrated? Do you know what you are talking about? He belongs to the 5 best living bassists and everyone in the business knows it. Underrated ... this word should be forbidden on youtube!

Perhaps his best performance of this song. Clapton at the top of his form, with the right musicians beside him, and what a hall to play in!
