This was written about Patti Boyd. She was married to George Harrison when he fell in love with her. He wrote Layla during that time. Eventually she left George for Eric, although they later divorced. A least ten songs from George, Eric, and The Beatles were written, or inspired by her. I've been a fan since The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Blind Faith (with Steve Winwood), Cream, Derek & the Dominos, Delaney and Bonnie & Friends... the list goes on. He was based in the blues, the backbone of Rock. His discography is massive... His duo with Joe Bonamassa of "Further On Down The Road" live at the Royal Albert Hall is awesome.

So much debate over who is the best guitarist. You made very good point about Eric's playing. He sets the tone, the mood, with just a few notes. There's nothing complicated or fancy with this song. As a guitarist myself I know that in his entire career, Eric has rarely strayed from a specific pattern. He has mastered it. Some want to label Eddie Van Halen(RIP) as the best, for example. He was technically great, but I rarely felt any soul or emotion in his leads. He is merely pyrotechnics. I could list and critique several guitarists in comparison to Clapton. But this has been done and done and done. Eric is what they call a 'rock legend', a god. He is comfortable enough with his abilities that he doesn't need to go for broke on every track. Just put out a good song. He does that. All I will say it conclude is that there is the story that Eric was once so intimidated by Jimi Hendrix's abilities when playing 'Killing Floor', he left the stage. Is it true? Some are adamant and others not so much. The truth lies somewhere in the middle. Jimi was a big fan of Eric, so in the end this will continue to be debated. So in the end, people are still playing Clapton's songs decades later. Yeah, he was/is still the master.
