_______________
Why is too much hinge in your backswing a problem? First, if you add or maintain that hinge into the downswing, it will cause the shaft to get very vertical. Also, the more you hinge, the more your left wrist will automatically cup. A cupped left wrist will make the shaft more vertical ad the clubface more open. In this video I’ll lay out exactly how much hinge you do want in your backswing and demonstrate some feels and drills you can use to achieve just the right amount.

Just came across this, found out myself through trial and error that Eric is unequivably right. I lost my self taught swing last summer when working on rotation lessons and developed shanks and worse. Took lessons, started from scratch to undo 45 years of bad habits, improved breifly & lost it in some hip extension moves. Mind you, i am pretty inflexible. Stopped for awhile, bought an indoor mat and some foam balls and hacked everyday, to no avail, until BINGO, tried the overcompensating wrist hinge. Things improved immediately, then realized i was never truly releasing the club. Now, it feels so much better and try as i might, am hitting bb's straight and hard no matter how hard i swing. This was a light bulb moment for me.

@@CogornoGolf From my perspective, calling it thumb wrist hinge makes more sense than vertical wrist hinge. Its only "vertical" when its at address/impact. It sounds like semantics, but it's more accurate as it applies throughout the golf swing. The scientific term is ulnar deviation, but thumb wrist hinge could be an easier term to grasp. Like wise, wrist flexion would be palm wrist hinge. And wrist extension would be knuckle wrist hinge. Flexion and extension are pretty easy to understand though. But thumb wrist hinge has something to it.

Hi Eric, since watching your channel I have been wondering how the fxxk does Cogorno get to that position at the top. Ar!! Over hinging, that's me, just that new feel pointing the thumbs up and back to me assists into transition. I now feel more in control of the club face, instantly striking the ball better. Your method of instruction is brilliant, please do so more video with Chris Ryan another coach I enjoy watching. It would be good to see you two on the same side of the pond, maybe play some holes and post it. Maybe you could have a word with the guy behind you in this post!!!! Be lucky Eric and thank you.

Eric - love the video. My 2 cents is that when you say 'hinge' you are always showing it wrt the Left Wrist cupping - it can of course also BOW and hinge. With my return to golf, and watching all your videos and learning like crazy, what has made everything so much easy for me, is to NOT think at all about the hinge happening with the Left wrist as you have show it, but to remove everything with respect to the LEFT WRIST in the golf swing and to then understand and only focus on getting the Right Wrist into the throwing wrist angle at the top - which just so happens to need the left wrist to hinge while bowing not cupping. This one thing has be such a lightbulb that I have been able to instantly show anyone who is cupping (excessive open face hindging) that what they are doing is basically insane - i.e. you would never throw a ball from your Right Wrist in that position.
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Paul! Thanks for the feedback. To clarify... The left wrist CANNOT bow(flex) and hinge (radial deviate) together. So no, the wrist DOES NOT hinge and bow. The anatomy behind our body combines BOW with UNHINGE....and HINGE with CUP (ulnar deviation and extension). It sounds like you found some good feels that work for you and I love that! But that doesn't change the REAL...
@wallstreetoneil
@wallstreetoneil 4 жыл бұрын
@@CogornoGolf I understand and agree with you - it's just that in the video when you showed over hinging you showed 'cupping' which isn't really over hinging its cupping - I was using the bowing language in an equivalent but opposite way to 'over' hinge - which obviously far fewer people do.

I also fight against overhinging. I think my route cause is that the club slips between index finger and thumb at the top of the backswing and creates overhinging, especially when I warnt to bow my left wrist. On which fingers shoul rest the club on top of the backswing with a moderate bowed left wrist? I really appreciate Your clear explanations and practically very helpful tips. Thanks a lot.

I hinge too much. Realized it's causing my grip to to change and closing the face. That thumb on my lead hand slides and my whole grips shifts to a much stronger grip causing a big hook, or an overcompensation to fix the hook. I need to reduce the hinge. Might also need to change my grip as well.

I’m a notorious over hinger. The only thing with me is the over hinge happens in transition in the form of a float load. I’ve tried prehinging and rotating and still a float load happens at the top resulting in the need for a quick unloading of the angles at the bottom = inconsistency. How would attack a float load? How would you slow the transition at p4&p5?
@CogornoGolf
@CogornoGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Throw angles more in transition then Fix a problem always by doing the opposite IF you have too much hinge from 4-5 then feel unhinge from 4-5 I would use hanger and get the hook above forearm in transition Of course you cannot guess and need to confirm with video to adjust feels kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hs-TeKpz0tvPpH0.html

Great comment and I was thinking a more thorough exploration of the wrist motions was in order too. Flex should be the primary motion imo. And if done well very hard to vertical hinge much. I see vertical hinging as problematic in many ways.
