This 1972 Chevy Nova with LS power has a really bad noise coming from its 12 bolt rear end. In this episode I take you through the process of diagnosing and repairing this noise. I also cover backlash, pinion bearing preload, bearing installation, setting pinion depth, reading gear tooth patterns, installing new gears, and other tips and tricks to make sure that the differential in your vehicle stays quiet and strong.

I've really missed a proper nuts-and-bolts repair video - and this is one of the best. How many people would mount an under-carriage camera to seal the deal? This is why we come back time and time again. Still the best quality; still the best on KZfaq. Long live ETCG!

EricTheCarGuy give me a call at 3BG Supply Co(we’re connected via LinkedIn)- I’ll help ya with all the automotive and industrial interchanges- I didn’t see the part numbers or the preload fitments but most are C3(electric motor grade for thermal expansion) however standard C0 is quite common for Diffs etc.

I am really amazed how many of these old cars are still on the road. They are going on 50 years. When I was a teen in the 1970's, there weren't many 50 year old cars on the road then. A lot of the old cars then were from the 1950's. I believe that Eric and this Nova are the same age.

We all have those ones that got away. Mine was a '72 El Camino. Selling that thing goes down in history as one of the dumbest things I ever did. I bought it off a friend in Phoenix for $500 in '00! Should've kept it - that was a gift! Instead I bought an '07 Silverado off the showroom floor. I've had nothing but trouble with that thing since day one! Live and learn ... 😔

I was taught to expect the tooth pattern on the ring gear to always be slightly off centre - because there is some lash, the drive side should be off to one side of centre and the coast to the other side. And your pinion teeth don't look to be sliding off the top of the ring teeth or hitting in the bottom between the teeth. What you have there looks about textbook. :-) Final drives were always the bane of my existence - I never did enough of them to get comfortable with the procedure - so it's nice to watch someone else doing the messy stuff and I just get to enjoy spectating. I have an 03 Tahoe Z71 with a failing differential that I'm fixing to dissect in my driveway on a shoestring budget. I'm thoroughly terrified. I cannot thank you enough for all of the info you cram into your videos. I have watched probably close to 75+ videos on how to troubleshoot / tear down/ rebuild differentials and yours have helped me the most in trying to wrap my head around what I'm fixing to do. When I was in grade school, a buddies dad was a diesel mechanic. He had tons of those bearings in the scrap pile. They are excellent wrist rocket ammunition!

Give me a Ford 9" rear-end any day. *SO* much easier to deal with. I upgraded my '68 Galaxie's rear end to a 3.70:1 limited-slip, and it was about a 30-minute job, tops. Un-bolt the "pumpkin", bolt the new one in, and fill the whole mess with oil. Didn't have to do any pre-load crap, because the manufacturer of the "pumpkin" did all that for me. The 9" rear-end and the Autolite 4100 carburetor are two things that Ford got *absolutely right* in the '60s and '70s. They screwed up plenty, but those are two of the best things ever made for old cars.

My first car was a Nova. Swapped a built 350 in stall converter, 373 gears. Plenty snappy. Was still like Rodney Dangerfield car in the 80's. Still love them and now it seems the rest of the World does also..

Man... I gotta say, but these 70's/80's (i pressume) cars with their American style V8 engines (i pressume) give out, nearly an orgasmic sound to my ears - they're wicked! - all the rumble and thunder heh :D ... And I love how basic and simple it is in the inside; with the vinyl interior and chrome details... Nowadays, all of the cars look the same with their wind-tunnel design and the over use of Alcantara.

Hi! I don’t mean to harp on you but when using the bearing separator, you should really turn it 90 degrees so that the press does not force on the bolts that hold the 2 ends together but rather on the separator. You did the same thing when pressing the 10 bolt pinion too… other than that I really like your work and clarity of explanations 👍. Thanks

@@sandchar Well I mean, the 8.8 is a Ford axle. It is much stronger than the factory 7.5 10 bolt that came in my El Camino

Great videos, I have a 51 chevy 3/4 ton pinion seal leaking. Replaced once and still leaking. It has rope and seal. Low mileage on truck so I believe pinion is good. Thank you Sir

Nice set up Eric. I always set mine up tight and to the toe. I see rears set up past the middle to the heel and they snap the teeth off the ring gear. They always walk out. Good job.

These cars you play with Eric are getting older. The guys I hang with are into giant 4x4s. They run diesels. I doubt if I can find a 12 bolt or 10 bolt these days without looking for a Barn first. Lol. You are good at what you do so you will get better than making a video on a Nova. In Mexico , Nova means - No good.
