This was probably one of the most difficult wheel bearing jobs I've ever done. I've never had one that wouldn't come out with a press. I suppose there's a first time for everything.
Still, I believe this video contains a wealth of information on wheel bearing replacement. By default, it also contains plenty of information on what to do when things go wrong. Either way, I hope you find this information useful, and perhaps entertaining.

I used to work in a diesel truck repair shop as a teenager, this reminded me of every bushing or bearing replacement we did. A torch, chisel, and hammer were your best friends. Still remember shitting balls when i had to hold a brass rod while one of the old timers swung a sledgehammer against it because the torch ran out of gas, fun times!

here is a little tip from an older pro industrial mechanic. when you're using heat guns and or a torch get it nice and hot. then use some air in a can turned upside down to fast chill the part. in most cases the quick contraction from the freeze spray will make the part fee itself from rust or a lot of interference

I just got through doing this job to both of my rear wheels. I ended up buying preassembled knuckles with new bearings and parking shoes already installed. Best extra $150 I’ve ever spent. Wasted a lot of time trying to separate before giving up. Sometimes it’s just not worth it…..

Why does everyone on KZfaq get so defensive? The guy provides informative, detailed, and humorous how to vids. If he were to just go out and buy a complete replacement part without at least trying to fix what he had it would make these videos pointless. I've been watching Eric's videos for some time now and I applaud him for what he does and how far he has come.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i believe Eric did one mistake during the installation of the new bearing into the knuckle, one should never put pressure on the inner ring of a wheel bearing or any other bearing, only the outer ring, and from what it looks like he put pressure on the inner ring.

+HansensUniverse You can not have enough different thick pipe sleeves squared off OD/ID(in solid for opposite pulling and pushing gathering dust over time on racks peg`s underneath your metal rack/5gal buckets. I before discarding to scrap metal like on hyd. cyl. telescopic type.Most except the outside large boar of the casted first stage you have to just grind a bandsaw width and just thru thickness of the chrome/moly for rough cut for blade to start the cut. If you do not have a lathe prepare some and take to your bud's shop to square. And all your different pipes in both std. wall and heavy wall. Pipe of course is ID up to 12" when they go by OD. eric, whats always worked on the nasty ones for me is knocking the inner race , cage, and bearings out, running a weld on the inside of whats still in the hub, and then press when it cools down. its going to shrink smaller than its original size when it cools, and makes it a lot easier. give it a try next time

+ben repinski I was about to say a similar thing. I've got no hands on experience with this type of thing but i would imagine if you heat the bearing it will expand the one way it can and when it cools, it would shrink in all directions giving you less clamping force between the bearing race and the knuckle.

Eric, I just want to say that I have seen quite a few of your videos and intend to watch a lot more. I really like your ECTG1 vids. As a one man shop I look to these videos and comments for a wealth of knowledge. It's so much better then even a whole shop full of techs and experience. I have been through quite a few stubborn situations like this one and complement you for completing the job and not giving up. And for sharing! We all have the tools at hand to do whatever we KNOW HOW. When we get wrapped up in a job, sitting down to some youtube videos isn't usually on the agenda. I bought the hub grappler as soon as I found out about it. I returned it as soon as I could. Soon as I found out that i had to remove the cv to use it, one more ball joint and its in the press. Mine is a 30 ton and I don't have any bullet proof glass so I don't push it very hard. Generally when I've got some pretty good/safe pressure on it in the press i'll find a way to smack it with a hammer in the general direction of pressing. The immediate jolt will get it moving. It also gives you the advantage of knowing when the POP will happen. Now with all that said, the idea of removing the innards and welding a ring around the inside sounds solid. I'm definitely going to give that a shot next time one gives me trouble. It's all these little tips that make all of us pros. I watch and read this stuff so I have a toolbox full of knowledge ready to go when needed again.

Quite often bearings are hard to get out, especially if they've rusted like this one & have been in there for a whilst. Most difficult one I ever had as a technician was the O/S/F on a Saab 900.. Our 10 ton press wouldn't touch it, and oxy heat didn't help at all either. After a few hours working on it I called up my friends who were mechanics at the local Saab dealership down the road, they said just bring it down and they'll stick it in the 100 ton press (yep 100 Ton.) Their press just pushed the bearing right out as if it wasn't there. On some makes models the wheel bearings really are a good interference fit :)

I have done several of those bearings and you made it look easy until it came to pressing the bearing out. Personally, I hate replacing them on those trucks. It seams it's always a battle. I have never seen one that hard to press out however. As others have mentioned you should never press on the inner bearing race as it can damage the roller or ball bearings inside. I always torque the axle nut so it applies the correct preload on the bearing. I guess everyone has their own way. You know when you have done a days work after one of those.

To get the bearing race out run a bead of weld in the race, weld and weld, about two beads right round, then cool it with water, the weld heats it concentrated then when it cools it shrinks, 90% of the time it will literary fall out.

+Wingmantx Welding shrinks everything - "During the heating and cooling cycles while welding, thermal strains occur in the metal and the base metal regions near the weld. The strains produced during heating are accompanied by plastic upsetting. The stresses resulting from the strains combine and react to produce internal forces, causing shrinkage of the material".

@dnlmachine4287
@dnlmachine4287 8 жыл бұрын
+Wingmantx That knuckle has enough mass to resist the potential warpage from the size of weld required to shrink the outer race. Especially if the proper heating/cooling procedure is followed for whatever steel that is. If the squareness and trueness and round of the bore of the knuckle was a concern, it can be measured and machined if needed. I know - lotta work, but sometimes replacement parts are not an option. Stay gold.

I just watched this video (fortunately, for me, AFTER working on the rear wheel bearings). I cannot believe how much that bearing was fused into the knuckle. I'm not sure if the entire knuckle assemblies were available when you made this video, but that's what I bought to install on my sister's 2004 Explorer. It was less than $150 and included the bearing, the hub, a new backing plate, a new knuckle, and new parking brake parts. It came completely assembled - NO PRESS NEEDED. The only snag I ran into was difficulty in getting the axle to come loose. Wish I had an air hammer available.

It's harder than changing a tire but ppl are just intimidated by a 1 ton machine with thousands of moving parts they hesitate on working on vehicles, u want hard...? Try diesel vehicles.... This issue has caused many Ford Explorers to be needlessly scrapped! I own a 2003 4wd Explorer that I bought new. The Expeditions have the same problem. I ended up buying a new knuckle from Sound Ford online. Then installed the new parts with Lucas green label grease. I have 2 other 4wd vehicles. A 2014 Ram Ecodiesel, and a '96 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Explorer and Grand Cherokee have LSD axles. The Explorer is nicer to drive on icy mountain highways or offroad situations within its ground clearance limits. Being a California vehicle, I did not have the corrosion issues that you experienced. All your videos are really good and informative.

I bought a chrysler minivan one time. It had a bad wheel bearing on the back right side. So I thought no problem, I can do that. It had two tapered bearings on each wheel/stub shaft. When I got it home and took everything apart, I discovered that the inner race of the outer bearing wouldn't come off the stub shaft. The stuck race was only 3/4" from the end of the stub shaft. I put a three jaw puller on it and cranked it down with an impact driver. It broke the three jaw puller. Near as I can tell, the bearing overheated so bad that it welded itself to the stub shaft. I ended up having to find the correct wheel at a junk yard so I could replace the stub shaft. That was no easy feat because there were something like five different variations of wheel/shaft combination. That was one of the hardest repairs I've ever done.

Great video as always.......If you have one handy, you can make the vertical cuts with a sawsall/reciprocating saw. Its very neat and you can stop the cut a millimeter away from the edge of the bore. Making a series of vertical cuts will weaken the part inside the bore (in this case the bearing). Pick/chisel out parts of the circular "O" shape of the bearing to make a "C", then you can easily tap parts of bearing out the bore....if it's still stuck just remove more sections. Thanks again for all the great videos!

I'm going have to be the voice of logic here and no offence but that is one crappy built press. wheel bearings can often require 50 ton force to press out. I've removed bearings like this before that needed 400 ton of force to remove them. I remember briansmobile1 has a video with a volvo in a similar situation
@NamesAA
@NamesAA 8 жыл бұрын
+foxdmulder Its not crappy, its very small. 20 tons is teeny tiny for trucks. My dad is a machinist and I have a few presses in my house the biggest one is 28 tons or something like that and it wouldn't cut it for the bearings on his s10. And thats one diesel ass press from the 50s, no flex in it like this one, but it still wasn't strong enough.
@foxdmulder
@foxdmulder 8 жыл бұрын
+Reddituar maybe so. But by the same token the design of this press is flawed. A h frame construction a bottle jack press design. Most shops as a minimum would use a 50 ton as a minimum. budget presses like this cost more in the long run have a look at this press: munstertoolco.ie/trav-ram-twin-speed-floor-press.html. I have this. and for what it is its never failed me yet. I've had stuck bearings, 1 "bap" with an air chisel while standing at arms length through a bores out sheet of ply and it will punch out any stuck bearing

+foxdmulder I suppose he could beef up the press or buy a bigger one, but his experience tells him that for MOST* work he does, the press he has is adequate. Hey Eric, that plate to press in the bearing was to small...you might have damaged it a little...only press it in on the outside ring of the bearing. All the force was going to the rollers of the bearing...and thats a no no ;-) And that torque stick...hmmm...almost every brand and car has a different torque spec on the wheel nuts/bolts...not the finest way of art...lets call it a short cut that works (but i personally hate those on important parts like the wheels...) Sorry for the criticism...i know how the wind blows and time and money and stupid not cooperating vehicles bla bla bla...but as a master mechanic i cringe a bit seeing all that...sorry man. To explain myself, i am from germany and may be a little "nazi" about certain stuff. And again, i am sorry about that. You are a great guy and almost everything you do is 100% text book...but i had to on this one. People are watching this vid and saying: "That must be the correct way to do it".....and its not. Checked my limbs, i was good, and the bearing moved 2cm, and then moved easily with every pump of the press. Stared death in the face at least twice. The owner of the vehicle said to forget it and i yelled at him that the bearing was going to come out if it costs me $4,000 in equipment loss/damage/purchase! Ahh memories of doing the front wheel bearings on my 89 Accord! Once you get the inner race liberated with the smoke wrench, instead of using the cutoff wheel, try firing up the welder. Run 4 good hot beads across the outer race. The weld cools and shrinks the outer race a little, and the heat loosens up the rust just enough that it comes out nicely. Nice snap ring pliers....I have the same set. Only complaint is the red handle bits tend to not stay put and like to slide off sometimes.

An old backyard mechanic trick is to heat the hell out of the main material around the item to be removed, and carefully spray the item to be removed with penetrating oil to cool it. Quickly rap it or use the press. In this case, heat the knuckle and cool the raceway. Can even use freeze spray. The cold shrinks the bearing race, making it smaller. Also potentially creates fissures in the corrosion to get some in there. Seen this before.
