This cabin air filter replacement video applies to forth generation (2007-2012) Nissan Altima's. Some parts of this procedure may also apply to other Nissan models.
It's a simple process and doesn't require a lot of tools. It can also save you a great deal of money replacing this maintenance item yourself. Not to mention it will help keep the air inside your vehicle free from contaminants.
The average replacement interval is every 15K, sometimes as low as 10K based on the air quality where the vehicle is being used.

Correct, there is no need at all to remove anything related to the glove box. You have to squeeze the filter to get it in and out. Also, air flow is towards that back, not the front as indicated in the vid.

I watched this video and another and lots of people are stating that the glove box doesn't need to be removed. I'm not saying they're wrong, but after several attempts trying to get filter back in without removing the glove box I decided to try it with removing the glove box. Took one attempt to get filter in after removing the glove box. Unfortunately should of read comments before hand because did but arrow facing the wrong way. Conclusion glove box removal may not be necessary, but did make it easier for Me.

I was feeling lazy and told my mechanic to change my engine air filter and the cabin air filter. I bought my car used, and it turned out that the last owner, or whoever changed the cabin air filter, had put it in wrong and didn’t even put in the cover. It was so deep inside that it took close to an hour to get it out. I ended having to pay almost $100 for parts and labor. Nissan made the removal and replacement so hard, that some people will either not bother changing it or pay a mechanic $50+ to do it for them.

It is true. You can replace the filter without taking out the glove box. The trickiest part is getting the filter out and back in. I used my cell phone light by placing it beside me and was able to see what I was doing. Be prepared for dust! Based on a comment below, it took about 10 minutes.
@crawkert2
@crawkert2 8 жыл бұрын
It's easy to push the new filter in too far and it falls inside. Almost impossible to grab then. When I did this, I discovered that by turning on the blower, it traps the filter against the side and then you can grab it and pull it back out.

Well done, Eric! Thanks for the step-by-step instructions. Very easy to follow. Confused on the air flow direction. I watched another Altima video that stated the filter's (arrows) should be pointing toward the car interior, not the engine.
@metalguru6152
@metalguru6152 Жыл бұрын
That's how the microguard filter directions show it and there is a tab on the microguard filter to make removal easier. It would make sense that the air flow would go towards the inside of the car from the heater core on the firewall. Eric was probably frustrated dealing with this ridiculous cabin filter location. Imo they should make it easier for the car owner but Nissan wants their dealerships to make money.

I had a dealer replaced the filter on my wife's 2009 Altima about 4 years ago. After watching this and a few other videos, I decided to give a try for this daunting task. It seems from the video and comments that taking out the dirty filter won't be quick and easy, but for me it was zero effort. How? Because there was NONE in the housing! The dealer took the dirty one out and simply put the plastic cover back on, and charge me for parts and labor! I guess they thought I would never want or be able to do it myself in the future so that I could find out what they did?! Shame on them! A few things that helped me: 1. Take both glove box and the plastic panel on the left foot side out. They were easy to do and gave me more arm/hand room to access the filter; 2. When the new filter was pushed into the housing, continue to wiggle it in/out and up/down to loosen it up and "expand" back to its original shape, especially for some thick 3-layer filters like mine; 3. When putting back the plastic housing cover, apply some pressure on the upper part of the cover while sliding it up until it clicks in at the top, then push the bottom in to lock; And yes, I confirm that the airflow direction should point to the back of the car. This is because when I put my fingers in the housing, I felt fins from the exchanger on my left side (car cabin side) and maybe a screen on the right (engine) side. That made me believe the fan motor must be behind the exchanger on the left side, thus the airflow direction must point to the back of the car.

Thnx for the detailed video, really helps to visualize the whole thing. The part about the air flow direction confused me too. It seems like you should install it with the air flow pointing towards the rear no? Not sure how the "ducts" are configured, but i imagine the air goes straight through to the vents. Maybe you should update ur video with a caption or something to address this since its pretty important. Also as an alternative, access the filter through the bottom, saw it done on another video. Both ways work, but maybe the way u prescribe is more useful for people who need space.

Ninja Tech Auto I have a separate question if you don't mind. I take my 2015 Altima to get oil changes at local Nissan dealership and on the invoices it stated they used 5W-30 (regular conventional) but on owner's manual stated 0W-20 (Synthetic). The service dept said my car uses regular convention 5W-30. I told them no, it should be synthetic. Doesn't the service dept look up the car on the comp to know the vescosity of the oil? Will the 5W-30 ruin my engine? My car has only 25K miles. Oil change every 5K miles.

I agree! The air filter housing on my 2011 Altima is bad design as well b/c I can't see the lower clips when I try to put the cover back on. One time I didn't know or couldn't tell t wasn't clipped on, dirt got through and my MAF sensor got dirty and my check engine light came on. The MAF sensor was not easy to get access to and clean.

+Mystickneon Only a horrible design for those who remove the glove box. You can replace the cabin filter without removing the glove box, and it only takes like 5 minutes. And even if you had to remove the glove box, it would only take an extra 5-10 minutes to do so. But I guess people don't know how to use a screwdriver anymore these days.

There is no need to remove the glove box or foot panel. Why do all the KZfaq mechanics want to make the process so hard. I do this all the time. Stick your head under the glove box with a good small flashlight and you are able to see and remove the air filter cover. Using needle nose pliers remove the old filter, vacuum out opening if needed and reinstall. Geez people.

Never buying a nissan again, they make it so damn difficult to do something that is relatively easy and usually done every 15k miles. Most cars just have little tabs you pull either in the glove box or under it and you pull it right out. Nissan makes you pretty much disassemble the entire glove box, to access it and even then its so tight to try to remove it. It was a pain in the ass. Getting a toyota next time...

Rip it out and drive away , old cars never had filters. Wear a dust mask if you want pristine air . Do you have a filter when you ride your bike .THESE CAR MANUFACTURES BUILD IN STUFF TO COST YOU $$$

I just did this to my 2012 Altima and see no place for the filter...I took the glovebox out and all I saw was a tiny cover,so I split the cover from the casing and its probably a vent for the floorboard,not for the filter size I bought. where is mine located in a 2012 Nissan Altima ?

You're right, same with a 2010 Altima - NO FILTER. Apparently some Nissans do not have a cabin filter period. I know because I followed the video and sure enough, no filter or place to put it. Called the dealer and was told "Yup, some Nissans were built without provision for a cabin air filter".

I like to put air fresheners next to my air flow filters so my car smells good when I drive. This car wouldn't work for me because it's too much to do to get to it. I'm glad I saw this video. Nissan is not for me. I like to also change my own filter. You should have to go through all that just to change a air flow filter.

You have got to be kidding me. I have 4 cars from different makes and none of them require tools to change the filter. Someone at Nissan didn't think that one thru.

How can someone with over a million subscribers who is 'teaching' them to do car repair/maintenance possibly get the most common sense procedure of which way air comes into the car... WRONG? The cabin filter is not filtering air that is LEAVING the car.... it's filtering air COMING INTO the car. Some things are easy to understand when there is human error. We all make those kinds of mistakes. But a car 'expert' that says the airflow direction of a cabin air filter is AWAY from the cabin? And then you edit the video and see that you are telling people wrong and don't make a notation in the final edit? And after the majority of the comments are pointing out that you're wrong you make no reply about it? No it's not the end of the world if someone installs it backward. It's not going to harm the car. Yes it will have some effectiveness. It's just the fact you're making more than a comfortable living telling people you know a lot about cars and there can't be anything more basic of an understanding air flow in a car.
