If you have a key that won’t turn in a lock, or you have to carry 2 keys because one of your locks was replaced in the past, this video can help you solve those issues.
In this video I show you how to re-key or repair a broken lock cylinder. Even though I’m showing this procedure using a Honda lock, this is the basic design most locks use, so this information can be used for more than just Hondas. Once you have the lock removed from your vehicle, this video can show you how to fix it.
Thanks for watching!

As a former locksmith who's had to work on atleast fifty Honda locks, your not the first. All of their high security locks will have issues eventually. You don't have to replace the cylinder. You just have to replace the high security wafers or take out all but the last three. They wear out and then stick up causing you to not be able to turn the lock.

I have this issue with my 2003 Honda CRV. The driver side door will not unlock with the key, which means that I carry the fob with me. I'd like to get a key with a built in fob along with fixing the tumbler but the Honda dealer says that it's impossible to get such a key because they don't have one with a transponder, though I've seen these keys for sale and I don't believe the dealer. Any ideas?

Very interesting, never seen before how the car lock cylinders actually work :) I once ordered a new key to one of my previous cars and the locksmith just needed to know the key code from the car's service book and he made working key very quickly. Huh, I also went through this when replacing the handles on my Integra. While I had the handles out and had to take the locks out anyway, I decided to clean the 20+ years of dirt out of the locks, and while I had those apart, I made a note of which tumblers had which numbers and where they went. The replacement (used) handles came with lock cylinders, I took those apart too and had enough matching tumblers to make a whole spare lock.

Excellent presentation format: narration, instructional vocabulary and sequence, clear, bright, sharp, close-up views. Also the suggested necessary precautions for example keep the ignition key in or avoiding “tiny spring flight” and anything else that… might cause the surgeon to go under his own knife… (figure of speech). Overall, a positive suggestion that it can be done. One confirmation, however: did I hear you say at 9:20 that the replacement pin selection from the kit is “trial and error”? Thus, given the increased handling due to guessing wrong, the existence of mirrored pin form-factors, possible tumbler re-orientation etc., I’m sure I for one don’t have the patience for a one-time only ignition lock re-pinning . Thanks for helping know when it’s time to remain in the audience.

This was awesome. The pin kit worked great. I had trouble putting the return spring back on until I realized that the ends of the spring don’t push against the ears, they are captured by the ears… this part of the video wasn’t as detailed and I was doing it wrong… a vise grip was also helpful to keep the one side of the spring in place as you tighten the spring around to get the other ear captured. As always, Eric is the MFMan!

It was either spend over $100 at Honda for a lock and key that would be different, or spend $100 for the kit for the repair, plus have plenty of spares for any future foolishness and all my other Hondas. For some reason I had trouble with the #4 half tumbler possibly due to key or tumbler barrel wear, so I left it out. It works great. Thanks so much for such a clear and understandable video. Keep up the good work.

I worked from the front (closest to the key hole) to the back instead. You can use the key itself to hold the wafers in place and you can continuously check it in the cylinder to see if anything catches.

You do a very good job explaining how this works. Most who make auto videos do a poor job on auto locks and keys. My experience as a locksmith... the only wafers I will use for Honda are OEM NEW. The aftermarket ASP ones I have, I shelved. I will not use them. My professional opinion is the quality is poor. The original kit can be bought through a Honda Dealer ( About 300.00 ). BONUS... The HONDA Kit comes with 10 door lock cylinder plugs and 6 trunk plugs... they work on MANY of the 2002-2005-ish vehicles. So if the lock is trashed a bit, you will be able to make it like new. The most critical aspect of this job, is replacing a damaged cylinder, and starting with a fresh key, cut by code on a very precise machine. I have an ignition that can not be saved... the center "drive shaft" was damaged by car owner wrenching on the key. I have never seen a damaged honda shaft before, and I have service over 2000 ignition and door locks since Honda introduced this design in +/-2002. Keeping all the locks keyed alike is helpful if the keys ever get lost, and it allows transplanting the chips from the old key into a fresh key that is made with provision for the chip. The correct lubricant for Honda/Acura is petroleum jelly ( Vasoline ) it is what comes in the factory kit, and what I find in half the vehicle makes and models.... the ones that do not use Petroleum jelly use Lithium paste grease. Just, ofr the love of GOD, do not use graphite or teflon or WD-Anything! IT will react with the factory lube, andgum up the lock. Your favorite locksmith can harvest the chip from the worn-out key, and put it in the new key, avoiding programming! If you replaced the ignition, the new one could be removed and rekeyed to match the original coding, it all depends how many locks there are around the car, which will be less work.

I was able to get my driver door lock working by taking the cylinder apart and cleaning. There was just enough dirt and metal fragments inside to make the lock get stuck. I sprayed it with brake cleaner and used a cotton swab to clean the gunk from contact surfaces. I checked the key insertion and rotation several times and it works fine. Very happy I don't have to buy a new cylinder or tumblers. Now that I've said that let's see how long it works before I have problems again! It's a 2003 so I got 18 years out of it with no problems. Can't complain about that, I guess.

I went through this last year with an ignition lock that would not turn on a 98 Honda Accord. In my case it turned out to be a worn out key.. When I called a local locksmith he told me that it’s normally the key not the cylinder that wears out. So I went to my Honda dealer and they cut me new keys from my vin and they worked perfect even better than the worn out keys which I guess is not surprising. I too was prepared to replace the ignition lock cylinder and go through all the pains including updating the door key locks but didn’t have to. 👍🏻

Found local locksmith who came to my house and cut new key and programmed it for $150. He said the old key is so worn out that continuing to use it will ruin the ignition lock. The old key is visibly worn down and thinner than the new key; I had no idea until I saw it next to the new key. I still have to replace my driver door lock.

If you cannot get your key to turn, there is a pin in the way, and sliding the barrel out will be finicky or impossible. This happened to my 05Honda ignition. I had to hammer the barrel out from the back side, destroying some pins in the process, and marring the assembly. Even if you remove pins to make it work, the immobilizer chip reader still provides some security.

If like to add that the "bumps" on the side of the wafers eventually wear down, and that causes the key not to work as well. This video doubles as a fix for that issue as well. My standard operating procedures for this is to match the ignition to the door key. That way, reprogramming the immobilizer isn't necessary, and the keycode still matches thr Vin.

Had I tried to rekey the ignition to the old key, I would have had to have Honda set up the immobilizer system to recognize that key or the car would not start. The key cutting machines at Honda can easily identify the key code, even without the vin so that part is irrelevant. Thanks for the comment.

Thank u so much for this informative video, instead of replacing each tumbler, if that’s what it’s called, how about if I just sanded everyone that sticks up, that would work , right. And just maybe not every Honda key would open this lock, I know some might but not all, is that correct.

Hi Eric love your videos. So glad to see you’re doing so well. This is for you and anyone out there that might know I know you appreciate these cars to so I thought maybe you could tell me. I have an 02 Acura RL that I love it’s my second one great cars I need to replace the upper control arms in the front will 01 version fit on an 02 because they’re broken up between 01 and 02 and the price is almost 3 times as much I know they change the ball joints in those years but will the 01 fit? If you see this or maybe anybody else reading it could help me. Thanks yours is the only video I’ve seen with any love for the RL I know you worked on them when they first came out I think they’re amazing cars. Have a great day thanks for the help.

Automatic window on driver door is disabled after doing this (i.e., after disconnecting cable to window buttons). When you finish the job you must reset the auto window feature. Steps: 1. Start car. 2. Lower driver window. 3. Raise driver window until close and hold button in UP position for 5 seconds. This enables auto window feature.

Had this same problem on my 2003 Element. When I bought it used in 2010 the driver's door lock already didn't work. I had to open the passenger door and reach across to unlock the driver's. After awhile the ignition lock started to get sticky, and eventually it jammed on my wife and almost left her stranded 100 miles from home. Luckily a guy at a gas station helped her out, and basically forced the key in and got the car started. I ended up having to pay the dealer to re-key the ignition and door. Expensive.

I have Saabs. They are notorious for filling with junk because of where they put it in the console. I just remove the wafers. Sometimes I just leave one so there is some friction to hold the key in. It's a whole lot cheaper and easier and just about as secure.

Thanks for the video! I didn’t buy the pin set, but your video gave me enough information to learn what to do! I just had a case of the key not being able to lock/unlock the door. Turns out that a single pin just got worn out and kept sliding past the key. Instead of replacing it, I just removed the pin entirely. It’s maybe a little less secure, but I doubt anyone is ever gonna want to break into a 15 year old car anyways. If they do, they’re probably just gonna break a window. Now my door locks and unlocks like a charm!

How does the glove box cylinder work such that the valet key doesn't open it? Great video as always.
@ericthecarguy

Remember the missing pin on the outer tumbler? I believe there IS a tumbler there in the trunk and glovebox locks so that the valet key only works in the ignition and the doors.
@lunstee
@lunstee 3 жыл бұрын
@@ericthecarguy The missing wafer isn't involved with valet keying (I don't know what it's used for). The difference is in the final wafer (the wide one that straddles both sides of the key). One shoulder is different between master and sub, and the wafer gets overlifted when a valet key is inserted. This means in theory, you can make a master key by cutting down a valet key. Looking broadside at the key with the blade away from you, the master cut is on the right side, closest to the tip, opposite the 'A' wafer cut. A valet key has no cut on the right opposite A. Of the four tumblers on the bottom row of your pinning kit, if I'm not mistaken, the two on the left (missing the right-side shoulder) are for cylinders where you want any key to work (e.g. ignition, driver's door), while the two wafers on the right (with a shoulder on the right, equivalent to the #5 tumbler) are for master key only (glove box, trunk). That shoulder blocks valet access. If you're testing your lock cylinder using a master key, you'll find one wafer from either side will fit. A valet key will work with only one out of the four wafers. Honda Service bulletins 01-077 and 03-068 cover key cutting, and door cylinder repair respectively. A lot of nitty-gritty details that are good to know can be found in them.

I’m impressed! I had bought a used a 1981 Honda CBX (1047cc inline 6 cylinder air cooled motorcycle) that had the ignition switch/lock changed. It required 2 keys; 1 for ignition. 2nd for gas cap, saddle bag release from the bike, and the saddle bag locks. I was a parts guy (Hobby Job) at a Honda (motorcycle) dealer. I looked up the part number for the lock set and ordered it. Maybe $100 total. Perhaps with your knowledge, I could have set the ignition lock to work the bike keys? This was in about 1992. Things are much different now.

The 'little lock pieces' are called wafers For getting the wafers, the easiest way I've found is to buy a set of assemble-it-yourself cylinders off of eBay (search for Honda recode cylinder). The cylinders I've gotten this way aren't very good quality, but the wafers are very good. I chuck the cylinder and have used the wafers for repairing original cylinders. I've also gotten loose wafers from a locksmith before, but that only works well if you already know what wafers you need, otherwise the work of determining what wafers you need is something the locksmith would want to bill for. This is fine if you're just repairing a worn lock and can read the numbers stamped in the old wafers. Some locksmiths refuse to provide small parts, so YMMV.

I used this video to rekey my own door lock for a CRV. I'm about to install the lock myself, hopefully it goes well. Mechanics quoted me $120 to rekey and install the lock I provided. A locksmith quoted the same just to rekey the cylinder. I say fuck all them and do it myself. The door lock mechanism was $21 on amazon, I got the pins for essentially $13 by getting a Civic's door rekey kit and just using those pins. The Civic key kits will include 5 of each half pins (30 pins), a bunch of springs, and 2 of each of the full pins (4 full pins total), which is more than enough for you guys to redo all the pins with some leftover. This saves you money on buying a whole pin kit for $80 when you just want to do one or two cylinders.
