How to Set Ignition Timing, Acura Integra - EricTheCarGuy
This is kind of part 2 to the video I did on replacing a distributor on an Acura Integra. Whenever you replace a distributor on an engine like I did in that video you will also need to reset the ignition timing. I did my best to show you the operation in real time but the camera really didn't like the strobing light so I'm sorry I wasn't able to get you a better picture of that.
The most important thing to remember with this is to read the procedure before you get started, if not you may perform it incorrectly and as a result set the timing incorrectly.
Here is a link to the distributor replacement video

@miuelevol You usually don't have to do anything to timing as it really doesn't go out unless you replace the distributor as I did in another video. If your going to just take out the distributor for service you can mark it's location before removal so you can get it back in time easy when you reinstall it.
@ericthecarguy

@zengutsu You don't line up marks with the valve cover but rather the lower timing belt cover and the crank pulley. You can set your light at 16º and look for the single white mark or you could leave your light on 0º and look for the 3 marks on the crank pulley to line up with lower cover.

@chillincruisin High voltage electricity (which is what the secondary ignition system consists of) carries with it a large magnetic field which you can not insulate against, that magnetic field is picked up by the lead placed on the #1 spark plug wire and directly corresponds to the firing of #1 cylinder.

@MyAztecs I'd be looking to the ignition components first. You might try spraying the components with water at idle to see if it starts to miss, this may help you find the fault. It's also very important to use the correct plugs, NGK or Nippon Denso only.

@axenz1 From the sound of it I think your in time. When you set your light to 0º it should come up in the middle of the 3 marks, when you set it to 16º it should come up with the single white mark.

@chaiboy510 It's probably more likely that the current draw from the shorted heater was messing up the computers reference voltage to other components but if the sensor fixed the problem then it's fixed. Thanks for the update.

@andrewmylyf As stated in the video you want to check the service procedure for your particular vehicle before you adjust the timing as there are many different procedures for many different types of engines.

@wpk24rsx Did you perform the timing procedure as shown in this video? If not you will not be able to set the timing correctly.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 14 жыл бұрын
@mrrrxxxxx Yes, you do. If you were not replacing the distributor and just removing it to do a coil or igniter you could mark the location before you removed it and put it back where it was but if you are changing the distributor you won't know where to set it so you have to do a timing adjustment at that time.

@chaiboy510 In 14 years of working on Hondas I have yet to see a fuel filter cause that problem. Try wiggling your key in the ignition to see if the car stalls, if it does then replace the electrical portion of the ignition switch. If that is not the case then you need to determine what is missing when the car stalls, spark or fuel, once you find out the missing component you will be able to solve the problem.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 13 жыл бұрын
@chaiboy510 It could be a problem with the idle control circuit or a mixture problem. Look for vacuum leaks as well as any exhaust leaks before the O2 sensor to start. You also might consider replacing or cleaning the idle air control valve.

@7719stu Good idea for the marks but it's very important that you short the connector before you set ignition timing or it will not be correct. Idle adjustments are done AFTER timing adjustments but you must be sure the timing is correct first. Also make sure that you marked the correct location. Good luck.

@HBGAH The set up on that engine is the same as this one and I think if you look closely it will say follow the service procedure under the timing adjustment, this is the service procedure. I will say that if the car suddenly got 'sluggish' then it's probably not the timing as that normally remains fairly constant, go ahead a check the timing but in your case I would keep looking for another cause.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 13 жыл бұрын

@hgortermarof How do you plan to transfer that mark to the new distributor? If you were using the same distributor you could do that but if you are replacing it it's not possible and just easier to time the engine after you have installed the new distributor.

@silverlight76 It does give you more options but these days most ignition systems don't even use a distributor and can not be timed using a light as a result, I would keep in mind your usage before spending the extra money.

@papercut1987 Yea the paint comes off the marks easily but the notches should still be there. You might find them on the pulley and pain them yourself with a little white paint to make them easier to see with the light.

@thanh20 That's normal, the reason you jump the connector is to take the computer out of the timing circuit as you make your adjustment, when you pulled the jumper the computer took control again. This is why it's referred to as "base timing" because the computer advances and retards from base timing depending on engine load and condition, you set timing with the computer controls disabled.

I take a paint marker to the 16* mark so it's clearly visible. Really helps on these old balancers. Great vid. Had to take a quick look as it had been years since I timed one of these.

Thanks for the video, Eric. You're explanations are helpful. I did a b18c swap on my 2000 si and it is running good. But I did not check the timing and have been wondering how to do it. Now I know. Now to get a timing light.

Howdy Eric. Just to let ya know my intake gasket is now complete. The process involved removing the distributor. I have it back in & got the timing as close as I can get it. I had the engine timing marks dead on & the #1 cylinder @ TDC.

@psychoninja911 I don't recommend trying to set the timing, it really shouldn't change over the life of the car, the only instance where it would be necessary is if you removed or replaced the distributor and even then you could mark the location of the distributor before removal and install it in the same orientation. They mark TDC on the crank so that it is easier to see with the timing light I suspect If you do move the dist it might do more harm than good honestly.

@MegaMarshal I'm really not sure what the benefit of doing such a swap would be but the only way to know if a rotating assembly is properly balanced is to have a machine shop check it.

@jtoplinerc Now I realize that you are not setting ignition timing but mechanical timing. Use the white mark on the crank and make sure the cam sprocket has the mark 'up' pointing upward when you line the marks up. Good luck.

@bliane386 I think you probably lost the key when you removed the pulley. You will notice a small notch in the crank and one also in the pulley, there is suppose to be a key that goes into this area to locate the pulley on the crank.

@red666A Timing would have nothing to do with that so you could rule that out. You might be looking to the idle control circuits and for vacuum leaks. Start with any check engine lights if you have any.

@200996 Ignition timing is hardly ever a problem these days. I would first look to the ignition system (use NGK or Nippon Denso plugs only), if I didn't find a problem there I would adjust the valves and check the EGR system for clogs.

@MegaMarshal Crank pulley? If that is what you are referring to probably not as I think they are the same. You really don't want to swap those from one engine to another however as they are a balanced assembly.

Shining a bright light at the crank while video taping will keep the camera from freaking out. You will still be able to see the timing marks line up even with the light shining in the same area.

@vontristan19 Put the old injectors back in. The only reason you would need larger injectors is if you modified the engine, putting larger injectors in a "normal" engine will just add too much fuel and cause problems.

thanks Eric for another informative video. What does it mean if you need to go further in rotating the distributor to get to the desired timing, but are unable to turn the distributor any further because you reached the stop point of its hold down bracket? Does this mean you have to pull the distributor out and reinsert it in a different position, then try again?
