Pronated Feet and How to Fix 3 Different Causes of OVERPRONATION

Identify the root causes of overpronation, and start fixing the resulting complex compensations.
In this video, we're going to talk about overpronation, which is a very common dysfunction that a lot of people either have or they've been told that they have.
Pronation is a totally natural part of our gait cycle of walking and running, and it helps us to absorb force - every joint in the body absorbs a little bit of force through the different movements and muscular activations - and pronation absorbs some of this force, so there's not so much shock going through other areas.
The movement of pronation is made up of three different movements:
1. eversion - which happens when the bottom of the foot and the lateral aspect of the foot points outside
2. dorsiflexion - which is closing the angle at the front of the ankle - basically bringing the toes up towards the knees
3. forefoot abduction - where the foot basically turns out (external rotation) And when you combine those three movements, you get an overpronated foot.
As muscles become sleepy or weak, the brain compensates for it, finding the most efficient posture to move from, i.e., foot pronation. Even supportive arches in footwear only create a bandage for the problem, it doesn’t address the root causes.
Check out this video to learn the 3 most common causes that lead to pronated feet, and then watch the next video to learn how to properly address these three things and fix overpronation for good.
IN THIS VIDEO
00:00 - Intro
00:28 - What is foot pronation?
02:50 - CAUSE #1: Flat foot or collapsed arch
05:25 - CAUSE #2: Lack of inversion range
07:45 - CAUSE #3: Hip internal rotation
09:50 - Addressing the root causes and what to do next

I've just realized this week why my ankles, knees, and feet are hurting and aching. My primary doctor said "welcome to being almost 50 years old because arthritis is giving you a preview".. Then he suggested orthotics. Other YT videos gave animated descriptions. But you are the 1st to illustrate pronation/flat feet in real time. Your detailed explanations while modeling what the body looks like before and after problems with pronation are so appreciated. I know you uploaded this 2yrs ago, but I just want to thank you for showing viewers what Pronation should and should not look like. Thank you!

Thank you so much for this video! I’ve had overpronated feet my whole life and didn’t know what exactly was wrong with my feet until now that I’m experiencing pain in my foot and back. My parents never sent me to a podiatrist either since it wasn’t really causing any problems for me as a child. My left feet is shaped weird now since I never learned how to walked properly with overpronated feet. Idk if it’s too late to fix it with exercise but I’ll try anyways. So glad I came across this video before I started buying arch support. Really grateful for this video, you have no idea. :)

This was really informative. Thank you so much. I broke my right leg near the ankle when I was 20 (i'm 32 now) and did not do physical rehabilitation. The break was bad and put me out for about 6 months because I received a plate and seven screws on my right fibula. Because I did not do rehab, I had to relearn to walk by myself and I ended up with a fallen arch on my left foot, which has caused gait and pronation issues for years. I realized I was walking on the outside edges of my feet for a long time to compensate for the weakness of other muscles. Recently, I have developed issues with my hip on the right side, and my knees are slightly knocked. I hope that with your advice and information I can get myself back. I haven't been able to run or play hockey without form issues and discomfort for a long time. I miss the days when I was young and could run and play sports without a care in the world.

Whoever got this condition like I do, I got few suggestions for you. First, buy orthodics aligned with your foot measurements. It will relieve you from arch pain and feeling of your foot being split to two. Next is - go run on the beach barefoot. It will train your ankle muscles and will pervent your arch from collapsing. I am someone who experienced so much pain in my foot that it made me think twice before going to work or whatsoever. For those who feel exactly like me, I feel your pain. No one needs to feel like this anylonger. Go run barefoot on sand, wear orthodics and live happy!, achieve your dreams!

I’ve had this problem from playing soccer a lot when I was young passing the ball you actually over pronate your foot repeatedly which eventually leads to your foot staying in that overly pronated position… this caused hip pain on the affected side (piriformis) syndrome . ( the foot flares out , the knee rotates inward, with the femur which led to hip pain)

dude, thank you so much. I've been dealing with weird foot/knee/leg pains for like 7 months now, & about 5 months ago i started feeling like my ankles were rolling inwards, knees rolling in, & feet splaying out. I know this sounds silly but its been a big source of depression & anixety since then because exercise is really important for my mental health & I've been practically bed ridden for months trying not to make it worse, & this along with binge eating and self esteem problems is a terrible combination. Plus the terrible anxiety that my feet & legs are becoming deformed, and the thought that it could be permanent & i may never be able to run or comfortably walk again. For a bit I thought it was PTTD, but a podiatrist told me that wasn't it, so it was just more confusion but after more research I found this & it really seems like it matches my problem. Gonna check out your exercises & drills to correct this, I can't express my gratitude enough cuz this could genuinely help get my life back on track, i feel like i have hope for the first time in a while. much love

This is basically me. Im 24 and this past summer a co worker of mine told me i need to get my feet check as my left boot was severly pronated. Never really felt pain or discomfort until i was conscious about the issue and now its given me anxiety and depression like you mentioned. Ive been going to a podiatrist and physical therapy but the podiatrist is a joke and hardly analyzes whats wrong. She just throws custom orthotics at my issue and leaves it at that. Im a carpenter and love what i do but i get anxiety because i feel with this issue i may not be able to do this work for much longer

i’ve sprained my ankles many times throughout my life having always played sports but ultimately never had problems. but about 3 years ago i twisted my ankle super hard and since then i’ve noticed my right ankle being a lot thicker than my left, my right foot pronates out right, i don’t have engagement in my right calf, and when walking it feels like my right leg entirely is jammed needless to say i NEEDED this video

Your explanation on the cause is very true. I have flat feet and I wore supportive arch shoes for about 3 years. I wear them all the time. I dont have pain and flat feet any more. But then I realize that my arch muscles are extremely weak. Because the arch support is too good and my muscles were never used. And I have pronated feet now. No one told me that the arch support shoes are actually harming my feet.....

When I was a young boy my left foot turned in a little bit. Enough to have my mother notice and take me to the doctor's. The doctor said that I may need a boot to correct it. I was scared of being mocked at school so I consciously would force my left foot to angle "correctly" so it didn't appear that my foot was angling inward. Now that I'm jogging I'm finding pain and I'm sure now it's because of all these compensations I wasn't even aware I was doing anymore. This one video helped me understand what may be my issue and I will proceed to do some of the exercise drills. Thanks for being so thorough with your explanations just the video I needed.

So happy to find this video!! I’ve been having knee problems on left side and notice that my hip and glutes are uneven, muscles don’t appear to be activating on that left side. Also having shoulder and bicep issues. Backtracked on a dusty trail this evening and could see my externally rotated foot pattern with that left footprint! I walked on focusing on straightening that foot as I continued to hike. Now my big toe hurts, my knee is feeling uncomfortable….I really appreciate the in-depth explanation of the compensatory factors and look forward to your next video on how to remediate!

this is incredible depth and understanding of the problem! Thank you! I had a serious ankle injury years ago, had surgery and wore orthotics for my right foot for years been through PT, but I still have AI impingement and overpronation. it's frustrating because I know the orthotics aren't helping and most PTs don't look in-depth at my movement mechanics. This helps prove that mechanics matter. I switched to barefoot shoes and my left got much better and my right foot has improved, but still some issues persist.

About 8 months ago I started wearing work boots with very high/stiff arch support.(Whites boots) The company advertises like the arch support is supposed to be really good for your foot health and better for long work days….. now watching this I realize that the boots are probably the cause of my right foot becoming pronated considering I’ve never had this problem ever before I started to wear boots with high arch support…. Thanks for the video you definitely saved me from further damaging my foot. I’ll look into the exercises you recommend.

I've been watching your videos for years coach Eric. Back when it was Eric Wong MMA channel. I have extremely open hips and it's really good for headkicks, but i have noticed pain in my right knee after playing football (soccer). When i look how i walk my right foot is definitely overpronated and this video explains the physiology perfectly. I think i must be lacking internal rotation at the hip and probably make it worse with all the splits/hip stretches i do without fixing the root cause. Thanks for this.

Horse riding helped notice I have forefoot abduction! For almost a year I’ve been told to point my feet to the nose of the horse and I always end up pointing my feet outwards, until recently one of the women that has been telling me the same thing came to me and tried to put my foot in place. How did I react? Almost crying because of the pain, she told me my reaction was not normal and that it shouldn’t hurt at all. I noticed it was because that was the default position of my feet and putting them straight seemed right, but painful :/
