Decidi legendar em português esse vídeo porque para nós latinos, fica mais difícil buscar traduções e letras das obras européias e também porque um belíssimo trabalho como esse merece ser apreciado com detalhes.
Erlkönig (Rei dos Elfos) é um poema de Goethe musicado por Schubert. É composto por quatro pesonagens, o narrador, a criança, o pai e o Rei dos Elfos (a morte) e retrata o desespero de uma criança ao ver a morte se aproximando para buscá-la.
Há duas possibilidades de interpretação: a primeira, que o pai está levando ou voltando do médico com seu filho doente. A segunda, sugere que o pai, de fato, ignora sem querer as visões do filho face à morte.
É uma peça densa, que exige do cantor e pianista intensa dramaticidade para interpretar essas quatro personagens numa só canção, como faz com muita propriedade e requinte, Jessye Norman nesse vídeo.

Her Elf King voice was by far the most Elf King voice I've ever heard. I think a lot of people have trouble making it so ethereal, especially in comparison with the father voice.

No one understands this song better than Ms. Norman. "Erlkönig" should be scary! Norman is living this song, not just interpreting it. I agree with "Bass Man Xan" -- Ms. Norman changes her tone so that you know whether it is the father or the child. Brava!

Sou apaixonado pelo trabalho da Jessye Norman... imagina, a gente anos atrás no interior, no sul do Brasil não tinha acesso a tanta coisa bela. Se bem que Jessye disse a Tavis Smiley em entrevista algum tempo atrás que lhe dói imaginar que alguém escute sua voz em CD ou por computador... eu até que entendo pois, por exemplo, por mais que goste de ver pinturas de van Gogh em livros, nada compara com os originais. --Paul

Errado. Erlkönig vem de Ellenkonge, que, sem sombra de dúvidas, significa "Rei dos Elfos".

Existem mais interpretações, na verdade. Existe a primeira e mais literal que o menino está adoecido e tendo alucinações com o rei dos elfos. A segunda, sugere a pedofilia e estupro, em que o Rei dos Elfos e um assediador e que o pai ignora completamente. A terceira é mais Intuitiva e trata que a criança não é uma criança em si, mas sim a infância, que começa som jogos e flores na praia, evolui para a sedução das menininhas e o pai ignora até que, sem que o pai perceba, a "criança" já esteja morta.

Impresionante Jessye Norman.... BUT it is a total lack of Respect towards the Music itself doesn't make any mention of the pianist... This could be the reason why many great pianists refuse to make Music with singers. Their lack of musical knowledge and training, as well as understanding and respect for music and collegues is Legendary...

I couldn't agree more! Very few pianists can even play this song at a convincingly quick tempo, and it is astonishing to me that the miracles they have to perform in such music are just taken for granted. Let's see what even the greatest of singers sound like without a top accompanist to make music with them... To be fair, I have noticed that singers are generally very good to their pianists these days. They're beginning to realize how much they need them...

Pq só quem vê é a criança, então ela deu esse nome, mas é um eufemismo para um ser maligno mesmo, a cantora expressa isso também pela voz e expressões faciais.
