I put my Ernie Ball Music Man guitars, those I tour with, into a sort of token-like protective hibernation when Covid put a stop to all touring back in March 2020. I thought, "These can stay in their cases until the world sorts itself out again and I can celebrate by bringing them out". Little did I know what 'else' was to come... So I'm now awakening them from their enforced siesta to, well, put a little light into my life, I guess. First up for video demo is the ever trusty 2018 Cutlass RS HSS. RS for 'roasted' (birds-eye maple neck) and HSS for humbucker-single-single coil pickups. It's light, built with zero-compromise materials and it's an absolute joy to play - almost makes me feel guilty! Here's a look at it.

Desktop Monitors: PreSonus R80 R-Series Active AMT Studio Monitors (www.presonus.com)
Computer: 2017 Apple iMac Pro, 2.5 GHz 14-Core Intel Xeon W, 64 GB 2666 MHz DDR4, Radeon Pro Vega 64X 16 GB
Software: Logic Pro X, Apple Final Cut Pro X, Compressor.

I got a EBMM Cutlass SSS RS about a year ago. Guitar is an absolute gem, love it to death. Great vid Brett!

I got myself the 'budget' version, the 'Sterling' and I was amazed with that, a standard SSS, it sounds more like a Strat than a Strat, so I imagine the full strength is beautiful, all the best Brett and lets hope the world settles down

They’re nothing alike with the neck, it’s sad actually, I tried one at Sky Music and it was thick as heck (The Sterling) and all my RS Musicmans have been amazing

That bridge pick up absolutely sings, great demo Brett. I've just bought the Cutlass RS with the flamed roasted neck and rosewood fretboard. Amazing instrument, your demo was a major influence in keeping me away from Suhr & PRS - Thanks !!

That is an amazing Erine Ball Cutlass RS HSS, but the best part of it is Neck! Wow! Yeah, bring out your tour guitars, I would love to hear them!

My son , an Ibanez guy , keeps telling me,..."Dad , You've gotta try an Ernie Ball Music Man ..." He has played some and would have one if budget allowed. Hahah. But man I absolutely adore this model. It's a sure super sounding assuming by the looks and reviews well built instruments. I will one day try to figure one to my house. Or at least try to play on one. Excellent review Buddy!!! Hope you are well and your tour is going great.

I'm not in a position to buy a USA MM anytime soon, but when Sterling released the new Cutlass CT50 I grabbed an HSS in firemist silver. The electronics were all pretty bad except the output jack. The high E string was barely on the fretboard and the neck needed to be reset. I'm not overly picky about paint and cosmetics when buying these relatively inexpensive guitars. In the end it's a great mod platform, and with a bit of elbow grease can be hot rodded into a tone shaping beast! It's the one I grab now most often for just about anything.

That's sad you had so many issues with the new axe. I haven't tried any sterling guitars yet, but I can almost guarantee you wouldn't have had any problems with a legit Ball.

@@geoffkelly8160 The only real issue was the bolt on neck needing a reset. That's pretty common actually, and only takes a couple minutes to fix. I bought it with the intention of upgrading the electronics anyhow. When I show it to people now, after the upgrades, they assume it's around a $1000-1500 hundred dollar guitar. With the Gator hardcase and Schaller straplocks, I've got around $850 into it total. It's by no means a dud, and I'm very happy with it. If I'm ever forced to sell it, I won't take less than $1000 U.S. It's the one I'm the most proud of, because it needed the most love to be equal with its stable mates. Now she stands proud like the rest!

Bought a Sterling with lotz of upgrades. Come to find out, the nut size is too small 41.3mm with too close string spacing for me. Along with the medium frets. Im tempted to sell. They do make great guitars. Sigh.

Yeah, the colour appealed to me too. Charcoal Frost if I'm not mistaken. Line 6 don't pay much attention to me, I'm afraid. I'd be happy to take a Catalyst for a spin if they wish though.

G'day Brett. Saw your Crown soundcheck vid. Was the Tele your only guitar that night? Can tell you've got your chops right up there. Do a clip on what you are taking out on the national tour. DI or wall of amps.

Hey Brett. I’m in the market for a new HSS guitar. Would you lean the music man or your Fender Ultra HSS? Fender has a roasted neck option. Do you notice the stainless frets on the MM?

Fender don't compete in this price range, Mike. The EBMM gear is built to such exacting and high standards that few companies can compete with at all. Stainless frets are always noticeable for their extra zing and hardness if they're done right. I'd choose this over the Ultra every time.

I'm coming from a heavy strat background - how does the lack of forearm contour affect the feel? I haven't played tele's in a long time due to the lack of that contour. MAybe this has a bit of it, it is tough to tell. Great tones!

It does have a bit of a firearm contour and a nice belly/rib carve - not as pronounced as a Fender Strat but I get on with it well, and I am also a diehard Strat guy.

Just an awesome guitar and I often have my heart set on one..then mind ($$$), tells me no. 🤣🤣🤣 Although, I've not ruled 1 out - someday day perhaps. The Sterling version maybe a good 'affordable' guitar, but far from the real thing. And the Albert Lee Sterling version shouldn't even carry his name, other than shape it's like a different guitar. Perhaps you should bring yours back to life, assuming it's still cased. 🤔 I thought the neck position here sounded surprisingly warm (in a good way) and definitely not strat sounding. Trust the tour is going well... Cheers. 👊😎

@ James... I think we get smashed on two brands in particular...USA made musicman and G&L. I assume as neither occupy a big space, numbers are limited & really too few stores carry them. I don't think that helps sales, then again they are both small compared to the big players even in the US. Cheers. 🎶🎶🎶

A fair question, Mark. I like that humbucker for the lead stuff, but I reckon an A5, splittable, PAF-type would suit what I have to do with this line-up a little better. I'll put in a request! :D
