This piece was written by the then dirigent of Chor der Reisigen roughly one hundred years ago, and the sheet music has been carefully kept within the choir ever since. While written in the style of Landsknechtslieder, it is quite modern in origin.

@@crazychicken7125 you'd have to join the choir I'm afraid, otherwise you're unlikely to find it. I wrote the then director some years ago, but even though I'm located in a different part of the world, they were unwilling to part with the music. I fully sympathise.

My all time favourite Landsknecht song - it tells something about the Bundeswehr that it seemingly never adopted this simple, easy to sing yet extremely powerful song into its standard repertoire (back then we had to sing that stupid merrily go luckily Westerwald song). Some German politicians even state that there was no thing such as "Teutsche Länd" which is outrageously stupid and clearly wrong: I recently visited the area where I grew up, some 1000+ km away from where I live now and a bus stop in an old region near a famous castle bears exactly same old German name as the quarter I live in now.

The picture shows the battle of Sempach 1386 between knights of the duchy of Austria (left) and the Swiss Confederation (right). The Austrians were crushed. It hasn't much to do with the meaning of the music.

It seems that the rivalry between the swiss mercenaries and the german landsknechte dates back before the "founding" of the landsknechte in 15th cntry. So even if this battle dates before the founding, there may have been some kind of german landsknecht predecessor been involved.

@@Sarimae23 Yes...look at the banners at the right side....Uri, Unterwalden und Schwyz. Furthermore, the armor is late 13th century. Hundsgugeln and Bascinets wer outdatetd in the 30years war, the fancy broad hat with that crazy featherbush was king at Breisach.....^^

The One with bull's head was the emblem of the royal staroste of the principality of Głogów, Hans von Loos. Edit. My mistake. The bull's head is a Swiss coat that is very similar to that described above.

Sehr interessant. Ich komme aus einem kleinen Dorf in Tirol und unsere Nachbarstadt (Vils) hat als Wappen einen schwarzen Stier der seine Zunge herausstreckt, mit gelbem Hintergrund. So wie auf der Flagge oben rechts im Bild.

That swiss man pushing aside the lances, sacrificing himself for the victory is a legend. Those rather cheaply equipped Swiss fought a full hearted battle and truly deserved to win. sincere respect from Austria PS: the picture really doesn't fit with the lyrics ;)

That‘s Arnold Winkelried, a swiss legendary hero. He sacrificed himself in battle against the austrian knights. He‘s kinda like our Swiss version of the berserker of Stamford bridge.

I have a question as a English speaker trying to learn German the spelling of Victoria here is different than another song which uses Viktoria So my question is (I understand this is a much older song). Did the spelling change? Or is it a regional thing? Love the channel I’ve been trying to learn all of Unser liebe fraue and you’re channels been of great help!

I did not knew a other German Spelling than here wich is normal German. Victoria is also nearly the same in German or English, but Victoria is mostly speaken slower than in English, but Victoria from the the South of the UK (ot older people of the UK) is eg similar to the German spelling

Well in this case Victoria is used in a setting when latin was still used so it stands for the latin word for victory. Viktoria and Viktor are the female and male German names that derive from the latin word.

Love the song, but the choice of background image is a bit odd. It's depicting the class between Austrian knights and Swiss militiamen at the battle of Sempach 1386. 100 years before the landsknecht started being recruited.

Das ist altes Deutsch, damals war die Grammatik noch nicht so genau festgelegt^^ Halte dich immer besser an neuere Lieder beim Deutschlernen. Bei altertümlichen Liedern wird oft anders gesungen.

The picture don't fits the song. The only Victoria in the Picture is the one of the Eidgenossen(Swiss Confederates) 🇨🇭. The landknecht didn't exist back then, but if they where part of that battle they would definitely not be on the side of Swiss

Von Wipp geschaendt... wird im englischen falsch uebersetzt. Es soll heissen "von der Wippe geschaendet...". D.h. von der Peitsche geschaendet. Dem englischen ist das Wort Wippe sogar noch naeher und zwar heisst da die Peitsche "whip". It should read rather in english: "from whip dishonoured..." and not "dishonoured our women". The Word "Wipp" is the same as in english "whip" but in german it is an abbreviation from "Wippe" which means in turn again "whip". Wippe is the long form from Wipp.

Bist du dir sicher? Wipp wird einfach Frühneuhochdeutsche für Weib sein, damals gab es noch viele Einflüsse von Dialekten und keine klaren Schreibweisen. Es macht mMn mehr Sinn, dass sie singen: Der Feind hat unsere Felder verwüstet und unsere Frauen geschändet. Der Kontext mit Peitsche würde doch gar keinen Sinn machen, zumal ich nicht glaube, dass sie in dieser Schlacht damals mit Peitschen gekämpft haben.

@@dr.ludwig Kontext: Von Wipp geschaendt' singen sie. Wenns Weib bedeuten wuerde dann wuerde es im Kontext heissen dass die Weiber der Schweizer die Feinde geschaendet haben. Das macht keinen Sinn. Sondern Sinn macht "von der Wippe geschaendet" also von der Peitsche geschlagen... Zudem sind die Sprachen und Dialekte von damals zu heute nicht so sehr verschieden - nur die Aussprache scheint manchmal komisch. Das ist definitiv "Wippe" und nicht Wiif (niederpreussischem Platt des Teutonischen Ordens) oder "Waif" (englischen) fuer "Weib". Ich spreche noch als Muttersprache das Niederpreussische das wohl vom Deutschen Orden stammte und dessen Sprache war. Da ist das Wort fuer die kurze Peitsche "Wipp" (also von Wippe) genauso wie im Englischen das "whip" aber man sagt auch "Pitsch" im Niederpreussischen, was die lange klassische Peitsche bedeutet. Eine Wipp ist eigentlich keine Peitsche sondern es kann ein Stock, Stab, Ast vom Baum oder die kurze Peitsche sein - normalerweise womit man Tiere schlaegt wie z.B. Pferde. Fuer Ochsen und Pferde brauchte man eher eine Wipp anstatt die lange Peitsche. Also die Eidgenossen nahmen die Wippen des Trosses der Burgunder und peitschten die am Boden liegenden Feinde durch und stachen sie danach ab. Damals liess man niemandem leben.

the fact they used the name Deutschland implies it was written fairly recently in history right? wasn't it still the Holy Roman Empire back then? also that Victoria part made me laugh way to hard. reminds me of something lol

They don't say Deutschland, but deutsches Land/ Länder, which means the German land/ lands, and was already used in medieval times. Especially foreigners like the Italians just said Germany and the German rulers accepted that idea.

I must say that song is little bit romantic...landsknechts were mercenaries and they fought for Sweden,Spain,Dutch and more countries not just defend Germany with honor. They killed each other most when gambling than in battle :D Im negative person so I must mention that still nice song and backround.

They didn't fight for Sweden nor the Netherlands. By the way at the time of the Landsknechts the Netherlands were still part of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. And the Landsknechts played a decisive role at the defense against the Ottoman siege of Vienna in the 15th century.

They did their work in great way no doubt but people of Vienna who took their weapons against enemy are real heroes in my opinion.

Well, the song and the picture definitely don't go along: a song from landsknecht, with the picture of Confederates (Swiss) destroying the Habsburgs and all his knights/mercenaries. This is quite a weird "choice" haha. Pretty sure Leopold must have disliked the video from up there ;)
