This is the same actor who played the guy in charge of the colony on LV-426 in Aliens. This means that his character escaped the aliens and snuck on board the Red Dwarf as Dennis the Doughnut Boy, then worked his way up to captain. So Red Dwarf and Aliens take place in the same universe!

Season 8 is like that, make you laugh then frown. Some good things to come. Great video ladies. As always looking forward to the next one. After 8 you'll have 'Back to Earth' followed by three more seasons with some fantastic episodes.plus the movie.

I think they really wanted to bring back the feeling of the first 2 seasons with the bunk bed scenes of just Rimmer and Lister riffing off each other which is why they had the prison scenes.

Yes the 2020 special was amazing, it was the best Red Dwarf since gunmen of the apocalypse for me. Whilst this is my least favourite series i do love the next episode so i'm really looking forward to next weeks reaction

One thing that bothers me about this episode is Lister saying how they didn't need the deal with Rimmer that got him the confidential files. If Rimmer had never gotten that disc, he'd never have got the luck virus, which means Lister would never have been able to use it to escape.

The only one guilty of using classified files was Rimmer. The others were only accessories. And unlike the others Rimmer never consented to mindscan when he licked the envelope so all the evidence was obtained under duress and should be inadmissable in court because he was denied due process

It was only supposed to be a two parter, but there was significant budget overspend on the episode so it was padded out with additional scenes to make it three episodes long. The pacing of the episode really suffers as a result. Often wondered what the episode would have been like had it only ran for an hour.

Series 8 and 9 are my least favorite Red Dwarf series. That said, they're not the trainwreck some people claim they are. It's just a bit less good. But there is some fun to be had, and it is nice to have Chris Barry back for sure. I don't know if you've been told before (but you probably have) but to enjoy series 9 the most, it really helps to have seen the move "Blade Runner". There are some fun references in there to the movie so, if you've not seen it, you really should. Plus, it's a great scifi movie anyway, so it's a win win. If you've seen it before, maybe give it a watch again to refresh your memory?

I'm so glad I found your channel before you finished Red Dwarf! I'm English and grew up on this show. I remember when I was 5, my dad letting/making me watch the reruns of series 1 and 2 so I'd be ready for series 3 and I instantly became a life long fan. I have absolutely loved watching you two discover and fall in love with this show that means so much to me ❤ I really hope you're able to push through the dark times that are series 8 and the mini series 'Back to Earth' because, as terrible as I think they are, series 10 and 11 was a real return to form. I think series 10 in particular has some absolute 'classic Dwarf' episodes. You have earned a new subscriber. Thank you for being so charming and lovable. Keep up the good work

Your conclusion about this three parter - Finding it funny in places, ambivalent (at best) about other parts pretty much sums up this season for me. I don't _dislike_ it, but... There are aspects of it that... Aren't the best Red Dwarf can offer. Hoping you enjoy the rest of the season more on average than I do, although I will say that my favourite parts of the season are still ahead of you.

Red Dwarf Seasons 1 & 2: Cheap ass sci-fi sitcom where the main objective is "getting home", and the actors are finding their roles Seasons 3 & 4: Plus 1 makes the complete gang, and the new objective of bumming around the universe Seasons 5 & 6: Peak Dwarf Seasons 7 & 8: Doug Naylor tries to fill the void without Rob Grant, as well as Chris B deciding "I want out", then "I want back in". Whatever came after that I wont go into... partly for spoilers... mostly because; I don't know. :) I'll always love Red Dwarf, and I think I've said enough times now to convince myself that yes, I will watch the "newer" material now... But I really do wish they would reboot the series. The guys from Plebs would have been fantastic...

I was too young to have a strong personal feeling about the new direction, so I just accepted it. I remember my older brother really being annoyed at it since it went against the core dynamic of a small group of people stuck with eachother. And he ragged on the captain a lot. On the Movie, not wanting to be too much on a downer, it's OK, but definitely the low-point of the franchise IMO. I won't say more until you get to it. BTW, if you didn't know, in addition to the new episodes in 2025, there's also gonna be a prequel series called Titan with new actors written by Rob Grant (the one who departed). It's unknown how much it'll diverge from the original show.

If you want to cure the suction problem without drilling a leaky hole in the bottom, you could score a groove or two down the inside edge of your can holder (about as much as a thin straw would be) which would let air go in as you pull the can out and still let you use it as a fluid container 😉

Personally I wouldn't drink anything directly from a holder like that as quite often the materials those are made out of aren't food safe graded. I would first find out what it's made of and whether it's food grade safe or not.

I remember watching this the first time around and there were no seasons I hated but I there were ones I definitely felt were weaker. Weirdly, watching it back with you two, I've realised that it's one of those shows are are so good that if it slips just a bit or you get a couple of ideas that don't hit bang on the nose you notice it more. It's like the one duff note in an orchestra. I used to not really like this Kochanski because I felt they didn't really know what to do with her. Not all good writers can write well for both men and women and I think the writer/writers struggled with her character to be fair. But I like her more now and overall the duff notes don't sound so bad because it's just such a good show. BTW yes the film they did last is great, there is something in the works too although I'm sure someone else has better knowledge of what that is than I. Great fun watching this back with you two. Cheers x

Red Dwarf essentially has a major change every few series, 1 and 2 are the 4 main cast, s3 and 4 adds Kryten and changes Holly but still mostly set on Red Dwarf, s5 they spend most of their time on Starbug and s6 they actually lose Red Dwarf. Also s6 Rimmer gets body and can touch stuff. Then s7 kochanski returns and Rimmer leaves, s8 back on the Dwarf.

This is a decent series, I think many did not like it initially because these first three episodes are a bit hard to digest given all of the changes... fun arbitrary fact here...Chris Barrie and Craig Charles did not actually like each other at all initially just like Lister and Rimmer, they both had different routes into acting, they did learn to respect each other during filming but you just know that having those two great actors having an issue with each other must have inspired the writing somewhat.

After series 8 there was a 10 year gap before a special came out called ‘Back To Earth’ (watch the director’s cut, not the three individual episodes!), then there were three more series after that (bringing it up to 12 in total) and then the movie. And no, a new series hasn’t been “confirmed” but it is highly likely… basically the actors blabbed about it at conventions and on livestreams but both Doug and the channel that make the show have as yet refused to comment (despite many “respectable” media outlets running stories about it being confirmed).

The pacing is also better in the director's cut version. In the first episode of BTE I noticed strange pausing between lines in one of the earlier scenes so the conversation doesn't flow in a natural style. That's cut out of the concatenated Director's cut version. They do also cut out a couple of gags in the DC version, but those worked better on broadcast TV anyway, and you can catch up on them later.

The " . . . suddenly appear, everytime,, you are near" line Cat quotes are lyrics to the song "Close To You" by The Carpenters. This season/series is a perfect example of 'be careful what you wish for'. We get Red Dwarf, Holly, and Rimmer back, but . . . After this point the rest of the season was disappointing to me, and when you think the show started with Lister being in stasis, shouldn't that be their punishment instead of prison? Craig Charles has been hosting a music show on BBC6 Digital on Saturdays for years now! He plays blues, soul, R&B, Northern Soul, etc. He also works as a DJ playing that style of music.

I have enjoyed every season, one of the reasons being it has never repeated itself. They've never been afraid to change up the sets, the cast, the style, all without losing that core appeal of zaniness. Plus, it stays sci fi throughout (even if the sets do sometimes wobble).

Even if it’s a ‘joke’ and if he (offscreen) cancelled it out with another virus before anything else happened, Lister pouring the sexual magnetism over Rimmer at the end is grim and a sign of all that’s wrong with VIII. I know the show is being thoughtless rather than deliberately cruel but this just confirms that it has completely abandoned any emotional reality to have its characters behave like wacky cartoons. Back To Earth has its issues but Lister is beautifully written in that. He’s Lister again and not… this.

I love how silly this series has been so far. I especially love cute humour, so any scene involving scutters is comedy gold for me. Do I miss that sophisticated/dark element that Rob Grant added? Definitely! But I couldn't handle another series like 7 - and I think that this different format suits Doug Naylor's writing style better.

Middle aged Dwarf crew by series 10, 11, 12 works well. I like series 8 despite its departure from the norm. Series 9 can continue to NOT EXIST. I tried to watch it again on BBC iPlayer the other day…it’s taken a month to watch 25 mins of it. I give up.

Back To Earth, which is technically series 9, was a 3 episode special to 'reboot' the series after years in the wilderness. It is pretty terrible in my opinion but it got record viewing figures for the channel 'Dave' which was a relatively small UK terrestrial channel at the time. That lead to the commissioning of series 10, 11 and 12. The 2020 one was another three part special rather than a movie per se. And Robert Llewellyn pretty much confirmed that a new special was being done recently.

SHARK MEET JUMP! I can honestly say, without hyperbole, that this is the biggest plunge in quality of any show ever made! This season is an abomination compared to others, filled with self-satisfied nonsense (that dance!) and lazy writing!

You could Dremel a grove along the inside side of the mug to act as an air channel to break the vacuum at the bottom. This way there's not a hole in the bottom and you could still fill it with liquid instead of the can. 🤔

Overall I was disappointed when the full crew were reintroduced - it just doesn't feel like Red Dwarf, which was always supposed to be "The Odd Couple" in space. However, once you accept the different vibe, it's actually a pretty funny series. Still, cant wait until 'Lemons' ...

My ADHD is kicking in, Red Dwarf’s will attract matter but at a limit unless you can convince me a Red Dwarf on the furthest side of the Cosmos attracts matter?
