John Deere X300 & X500 Sereis Tractors: Slow In Forward Or Reverse

If your John Deere X300 or X500 series tractor seem a bit slower when going forward or in reverse be sure to watch this video before buying any parts or calling your repair shop. Check to make sure that your pedals have enough available travel to allow the tractor to reach full speed. This is a simple step that could save you a good bit of time and money. This is also something you can do if you are looking to get a little more ground speed from a new tractor or need a bit more power getting up a hill in either forward or reverse.

I’ve owned an X300 for 6 years and noticed my forward pedal has slipped all the way down. Thanks for this info and easy fix. Now it runs fast, like new.

The fix took about 5 minutes tops. I came inside to look on youtube to see if anyone else was having this problem because my X300 was going very slow in reverse. I thought the transmission was going out. Crazy how moving that bolt back 1/4 of an inch made that big of a difference. Thanks for posting this. I would have cost me $75 and a week in the shop for JD to tell me nothing was wrong with it and move the bolt.

Glad we could help!! If you're lucky they would've adjusted the pedal. A lot of shops are too quick to push a new trans on someone especially if they see the mower has a couple hundred hours on it.

My problem was the inner plastic bushing(M152766) on my X500. I noticed it was getting slower and slower. Especially in reverse. There are 2 of them. One on the outside of the frame, and one on the inside. They are a solid piece of plastic. If they are cracked, replace them both ($14). Then adjust the pedals as you instructed.

This is a common issue with these tractors. As dealers struggle more and more to find good mechanics there will be more people experiencing the same thing you did.

We sold a lot of X300 series tractors. They are a well built and reliable lawn tractor.
@THE-APEX

@@pjape The problem with the X3 series though, is that it uses the same K46 transaxle as the 100 series. The K46 is known for failures. Did you see much of that? Thanks Buck!
@EshlemaniaTV
@EshlemaniaTV 4 жыл бұрын
@@THE-APEX Not sure about you guys, but the big thing that I saw is that the K46 units used in the first year or 2 of X300 production had a paper filter. After about 100 hours the trans would start slowing down, or growling, or wouldn't move at all and the only thing that seemed to be causing these failures was that the paper filter was too restrictive. That filter was replaced with a screen type filter in the K46 units used in the X300 series and the trans held up much longer.

Eshlemania TV good to know. In the interest of full disclosure, I bought a second hand L120 that finally failed after 12 years and rough lawn use and 700 hours. I replaced with another second hand, maybe L130, and within a couple mos, it was slipping and is now shot. So I’m gun shy, did some more research, and will head up to the k72 found on the 500 series. I’m tough on it, hills, full double bags... wrong tool for the job. My mistake.

So is moving the front bolt down exending the linkage letting you go faster or pushing the bolt up? My bolt is in the up position and it appears I may need a breaker bar to bust it loose.

Thank You. Does this mower also have those 2 Plastic bushings with gear teeth on each end? Sometimes they are problematic at least on the 500 series. Their part # is M152776 for the 540. I cannot find a parts manual on line for my X320

Great info - thanks! Unfortunately, after making the adjustment on an X304 (and getting more speed) my PTO won't engage at all. I assume this is related to the safety feature of the PTO shutting off if reverse is engaged. Any advice on a fix or tolerances to check in how far to adjust? * Update: I had not adjusted the rear pedal high enough. After adjusting the rear pedal so that it was just a bit higher than my first adjustment the PTO works and no issues. Thanks again!
@EshlemaniaTV
@EshlemaniaTV 4 жыл бұрын
Depending what model you have there should be an adjustment on the linkage where it connects to the motion control arm on the transmission.

the X300 and X350 they have a nonservicable transmission made by Tuff Torq which is a K46 the other have a K57-K66 which only have a replaceable filter cartredge. as other brand of tractors use these tuff torq transmissions an the linkages on the transmissions can prevent faster speed mainly on the Craftsman tractors. as the older John Deere and other tractors the transmission is made by Hydro Gear which seems to be better and get long life beyond 500 hours but mainly the K46 gets problems near 500 hours those on the X300 and X350 as other brands too Simplicity, MTD brands, Husquvarna, Toro, and others use this K46 transmission. if its used swapped to a John deere the shaft connections should be the same.
