I came to China just to study Chinese for one year or two. Seven years later, still here, with a Master Degree, fiancee, fluent Mandarin, and teaching my native language in university. Seriously guys, it's a trap. Once you're in, you can never leave. Most of us are happy to be trapped here, though.

I've been here 4 years, going on 5. Signed another contract. But for some reason you can never shake the feeling that you're simply pressing the pause button on real life and delaying the inevitable existential dread of returning to your home country and resuming "life"; bad housing prices, high taxes, poor job market, etc. I have no idea what I'm going to do. None of these skills I now have will translate to another job anywhere else besides another ESL environment. My biggest hope is for a boring desk job that's non-contractual, somewhat stable, monotonous, and enough to live comfortably on. Is that bad lol? Aspiration level = 0.

I hate that many of you foreigners in China are acting like China did something bad to you all and you're the victims when its actually the other way around. I bet lots of you foreign English teachers dont even know how many parts of speech there are in the English languange. However, you are still getting 15000RMB per month or above with decent accomodation so easily in my country. You guys really should shut the f*ck up and learn how to appreciate the hospitality and kindness of Chinese people. Did anyone place a knife on your neck and force you to stay in China? Stop acting like you all are too good to be English teachers. You cant' even teach if I have to be honest!!!

Seriously, who forced you to come to my country in the first place???

As a Chinese living oversea I'm just so curious about the reasons behind this. How can you guys manage to stay for such a long time and are willing to commit some more years in a foreign country? During my stay in Toronto I just wanna go back home 'cause I can't sense so much inclusion here. Guess after graduation I will go back and live in Shanghai as well...

It's very interesting isn't it. As for staying in a foreign country, I think there must be more than one aspect which makes it attractive for them and their circumstances. Firstly maybe they find it more interesting than their home country which they grew up in like the guys are talking about in the start of the video 0:36, tjese things are Exciting, friendly and different. As they said, it feels different from growing up in a small town where not much is happening, a city like Shanghai has some natural excitement they find fun. I also feel like that when I visit for a holiday, although I haven't worked there. But I think if teaching job is low hours, maybe life there can feel like a holiday compared to a serious, strict job at home. So I think because they feel different and maybe that the experience in China is more special than the plain simple life at home, they find it attractive. Maybe at home they didn't belong either, don't have such an exciting life, so why not try working and living abroad in China. As for inclusion, true. I think it's hard in any country if you really want to be the same as locals, and really like to be a part of the culture, you have to put a lot of effort. I guess for ESL, it's just a job that which they can do without too much difficulty since they speak English. Plus, they can hang out with other foreigners, teachers. I still wonder if that is enough to be happy. I guess they don't feel they have committed to live there it still is a holiday for them, one day they will go back. Because I think if you choose to live (forever) in another country you want much more, to feel welcomed and a part of that country with the people. Anyway, it's always interesting to talk about this, and I wonder if anyone who's working there like to share their experience, I would also like to hear. Okay, those alleged teachers left part of their class behind. That is not authentic.
