So you want to teach English abroad? Here’s what to do NOW if you want to teach abroad.
In this video I share the steps you can take now to help you prepare to teach ESL abroad. If you want to teach abroad, you’ll want to get a TEFL/TESOL certificate, get some teaching experience by teaching English online or as a volunteer, speak with current teachers abroad, prepare your documents to teach abroad and think about WHY you want to teach English overseas.

Thank you for this helpful video. This has inspired me to gain some teaching experience as a volunteer while considering teaching abroad. Many of the teaching programmes I've looked at seem to assume you will be travelling alone so may I ask what you recommend if you have a partner and/or children while being interested in teaching abroad? Does this prevent application to many programmes who might assume you are single or not a parent? Any general pointers you can offer would be much appreciated.

Some programs allow you to bring dependents, but not all of them do. It’s best to check with the programs you are interested in. Also, your partner may not be able to work on their visa, so keep this in mind (unless they will be teaching like you). Again, it depends on the country and exact visas you are applying for.

You will need a TEFL certificate to teach abroad. If you are a non-native speaker, I also recommend taking an official English exam as some employers will ask for a C1 or C2 level.
