Esther never misses - I could listen to her brilliance all day. She brings such acute clarity to complex issues if you're truly listening to what she says. I see a lot of comments adding assertions and opinions that she didn't articulate... this is a 10 minute segment, take what she said and digest it. One of the BEST, hour-long interviews that I've heard from her was with Lewis Howes and it opened my mind to the ways that we operate in relationship and friendship. Definitely worth a listen: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iZtnZpdk2baveJs.html. I also love her podcast "Where Should We Begin". I've gotten so much from her without even reading her book, but that's next on my list! :-)

Currently re-reading this book, which has been very helpful in understanding my former partner's actions and the end of our marriage. Esther's other book and podcast are excellent, too. Having read the book and listened to a lot of her sessions through the podcast 'Where Should We Begin,' I think Esther's points about power are really important. Assault (from Trevor's examples) is not the same as infidelity (what this book is about), and she's not defending either. Esther has helped a lot of people to see their situations with clearer eyes and move forward with their lives.

I read it as she is saying most cheating stories are complex due to theres more layers to it than "they cheated on their loved one." Like the they could feel lonely even though they are in the company of their loved one and so seek it elsewhere. Doesn't make the cheating ok, but it shows some more depth than a simple lie to each other. If someone can work through that betrayal and they can have a happy relationship, all power to them. I am personally not that person but that's just me and my own personal standard. Have had friends that have worked through that personal betrayal before and still in happy relationship with that person, as a friend I don't understand it, but I make sure my friends know I'm here if something happens again and hope for the best for them

I agree that we need to deal with people with compassion, however cheating is extremely traumatising. Cheating is a violation of the body, the heart, and the mind. When you cheat you are ripping the other person’s consent away from them. You are endangering their life to disease when they have not consented. You are endangering them to the possibility of a child outside their relationship when they have not consented. You are endangering their ability to make informed choices for their future. It is one thing to be polyamorous, it is one thing to be in an open relationship. To have consent and knowledge. It is another to take away someone’s ability to consent to what is happen to their life and their body.

How does cheating take away the partner’s consent or endangering their ability to make informed decisions about their future?
@GermanEscobedo
@GermanEscobedo 2 жыл бұрын
You're right on every account. And I'm not trying to defend the act. However if you choose to move forward with someone that has cheated then you need to reconcile with their actions and find a reason why they cheated and find compromise. If you believe someone who has cheated doesn't deserve to be with you any longer that is also a valid choice. We are adults who allowed to decide for themselves what's more important and how to negotiate new agreements that would actually curb the behavior. Again if you choose to go that route.
@cukless6849
@cukless6849 2 жыл бұрын
@@rainbeauxunicorn5237 Probably meant because consent isn't given if it's under false pretenses, and informed decision like having a kid with their loving faithful partner but they can't have make that informed decision cause they don't know about their partner cheating

Cheating i.e. lying is still a wrong done to someone, if you can't continue with monogamy it is only fair to address it with the other person. Sure some relationships can still survive which I am assuming is Ester Perel's take; but not without consequences and pain in most cases. If it's as wide spread then it only makes sense instead for open relationships to be the alternative. It's not my preference but at least its the most honest.
@GreyCatDot

Totally agree with you except for one thing: I have been open to men who were in open relationships, but unfortunately, my experience has been that people open their relationships without STRICT guidelines as to the needs of themselves and their primary partner. I think a lot of people like the idea of an open relationship but are not emotionally mature enough to do it where no one gets jealous or hurt.

From Germany, in the late 60s: "Wer zweimal mit derselben pennt, gehört schon zum Establischment" - > Whoever sleeps with a woman twice, already belongs to the establishment. I am a 72-year old woman, who hates certain social norms, e.g. marriage, but have been in a partnership - not marriage - for more than 40 years. Neither of us two (to my knowledge 😃 ) ever was "infidel". Tempted maybe, but love, solidarity, trust, friendship were stronger. However, you have to work on that continuously, not just bow to social perspectives. The topic is really complex - shall look into the book. "Infidelity" was important in feudal times, when succession and inheritance were important, hence the origin of offspring. Call me "romantic", but in our times it is only a question of psychology, not sociology any more.
