What Business Leaders Can Learn About Workplace Dynamics from Couples Therapy
Navigating relationships and cultivating relational fluency is key- both personally and professionally. Each of us carries specific narratives which guide our needs and expectations - how we connect to others, how we define trust, and how we engage or avoid conflict. Most importantly, these inner stories determine how we communicate and elicit curiosity and collaboration.
We don't magically become different people when we walk into our office. Once considered a “soft skill” in the workplace, relational intelligence is now one of the top currencies of business success.
Famed couples therapist Esther Perel has spent more than 35 years helping people articulate their aspirations, explore boundaries between self and others, and repair trust that is broken. Now she’s applying her extensive knowledge of relationships to help us master the art of modern leadership.
This session and others are available for listening on the SXSW Sessions Podcast here: link.chtbl.com/directesther

Woooww! A revolutionary view of work and relationships. *Relational* intelligence... emotional capitalism... romantic consumerism... subtle narcissism - profound concepts that she is revealing. Her explanation of trust and the shattering of trust rocked my world.

"start by changing myself" because all about how you perceive it, and the how you mind it, and so how you emote it. The way you think is the way you emote. The way you emote is the way you think, different people have different degree of importance of emotion and thinking. Nobody can upset you, as any emotion is generated within you , you see withing yourself, you hear within yourself. No matter whats happening, if it happens to you that means it is your responsibility , now you have ability to respond.

Such an amazing conversation with Esther Perel at SxSW on our relationships at work! "All relationships rest on 3 main pillars: autonomy & interdependence, managing conflict & communication, & self-awareness & accountability. We all carry beliefs based on our childhoods about what we can expect from people. These form the lens through which we look at our relationships. What messages did you grow up with? That relationships are central and safe, or peripheral and harmful? Never before have we expected so much from our romantic partners and our work. We want our work to give us an enormous amount of flexibility so it will adapt to the particularities of our life, to be attentive to our physical and emotional well-being, and to give us a sense of purpose and meaning. In our intimate relationships, we want all of this for the long haul... and the long haul keeps getting longer." ☺️

You realise, or realize, that if survival is the decision and it is rational, then, that sort of debunks the intention bit ... ? ... anarchic ... love has no borders, hey ... conventions sort of go out the window ...when you are with the one ... it's no holds barred ... using a poetic licence ... ... caveat ... scale seems relevant, like in physics ... behaviour of objects ...

... "foolish things"? ... is it their region? ... perhaps if it were in part, their region, then maybe they would do less foolish things? ... How many foolish things though, do they do in their own region? They might be just as foolish if not more so, in their own region? Sometimes people do foolish things when they are trying to impress other people - especially if they don't quite realise that is what they are doing ... it's ok, you can look at me on that point ... but not in a prolonged creepy way please ... just saying ... hehehe

... "almost". How come they can't all sit down and say, things have got out of control, let's start again, let's start from here, in theory, put aside agreements which aren't actually working, and say, yes "we" had agreements and things aren't working, times have changed, so rather than waste time trying to force things to stick and stay stuck, what do "we", as in all sides, need to do for where the world is now, what agreement do "we" need to make, now?

... is it impossible to trust, again? I myself don't know the answer to that question. The solution phases in and out of phase. At present, it is illusory, simultaneously impossible and possible, difficult to see how, and in a writhing, yet not so much twisted way, not difficult to see that it might not always be, difficult to see how, even if, right now, it isn't clear how, it might be otherwise. Would comparing it to being like a non-conscripted and non-volunteering human guinea pig or piggy in the middle, feeling and thinking, outside the box (ha ha, but, not hehehe, no pun intended) inverse version of Schroedinger's cat, be more coocoo or more kooky? ... ok, now, a chuckle ... the absurdity of the reality of it ... it's surrealistic and cubist and neither ... a twilight zone it is ...
