A bit of context: I made a video a few years back called Let's Build a Time Machine with Pickles and Sadness. It was awful. The initial idea had been to try explaining what a gap there currently is between general relativity and quantum mechanics. What came out instead was the video equivalent of soft-serve vanilla ice cream garnished with ostrich droppings. But the thing has been haunting me ever since and I wanted to give it another go. So that's what this was. Why on earth are you so far down in the description anyway? Are you looking for a completely unrelated mystery link? You mostly talked about the existential dread of the cosmic scale (and that's great), but as a biotechnology student I would like to mention that the microscopic scale can invoke similiar feelings. The other day, my class were watching paramecium under the microscope and, when done, we washed them down the utility drain. And as I was doing so, I had that thought, that we're sending thousands of those tiny creatures down a fall equivalant to falling off a mountain to us, that if they could feel fear, they would probably be terrified, yet to us it's mundane clean-up that we are annoyed we must do. We don't care. Just as the supermassive black hole doesn't care about us.

One step thing further I like to think about is, we are the collective the colony of these tiny beings. As a collective we do not care if individual cell is gonna die, but whole parts of body, oh boy. Now one day I dream in the distance future as a collective we are going to achieve such feasts from science that maybe not black hole, but like stars and planets will "care". In other words, who knows. Maybe we will amount to something of significance in this galaxy and in a way it's very comforting to believe we will.

You regained my liking into physics and space, and made my crippling depression even higher. But no for real, I had lost my interest in physics and maths when I was ending secondary school (1-2 years ago) and I'm hating physics in my university, but you woke up that curiosity again and I'm going to fucking take it by the hand and never let it go again. Man, I really don't know how a professor can destroy my love for something and just one random (and fucking marvelous) video make me so passionate about everything. Your Saturn story really hit home for me. I was about 10 years old (mid 1960s) and my Dad was a scientist in New Mexico. He had friends who were had some really good telescopes. One very clear, very cold night at high elevation and away from stray light sources his buddies had set up a large telescope. Saturn was out and was tilted so the rings were clear. They got it lined up and I took a look. Earlier I had seen the point of light that was the planet, and now I saw in its glory. It was really there. It had to be huge, just floating out in space. It didn’t care. I was very, very small. It was my first, and strongest inkling of existential dread. I learned more that night that I learned in entire semesters in school.

That's awesome to hear. I live in the high desert of NM and bought a 12" dobsonion a couple years ago. This past winter we had a night like you described. Saturn was close to opposition and tilted to show most of the rings. Our friends were visiting w their 8 year old daughter who loves space and science. She's a chatterbox. Got the scope set up w a step stool for her. She was talk talk talking about how excited she was and listing various bits of trivia... As soon as she got her eye in the right position she gasped and went silent. It was magical to watch. We lined it up for her a few times but I was almost worried she wasn't that impressed because she was so muted after seeing it. Except for the sheer amazement on her face :-) Thanks for your story. Gives me a different perspective on her experience.

It is what KZfaq has been created for - building a communities of like-minded people who share certain interests, and this is the best example of it. Those videos are what inspired me to hope while in existential depression. If you can understand those videos then there is so, so much more in them than just couple of puns. I love it - they really make my inner-child excited and interested by the mysteries of the world around. I rarely cry out of awe and laugh with tears on the span of couple of seconds. They try to make us scared of space, full stop. It's the same reason they sent a teacher up when there were issues with the shuttle but it was cleared for take off & she, & the rest of the crew died shortly thereafter. The same reason why the people who were the original crew to be 1st to go to the moon but, on a test run, the capsule was filled with pure oxygen & an electronic panel sparked & burned them immediately. The same reason Neil Armstrong saw an error light, which he mentioned to the ground crew, a couple times, but who told him it was nothing - yet he had to manually takeover the lunar capsule, otherwise he & Buzz Aldrin would have crashed into the surface because they were going 10 times faster than their equipment was reading. There's also clever-accurate-but-wrong. That is to say, one can be clever, have devised a model or theory which is substantiated by empirical evidence; but still have their foundations be based upon an inaccurate premise, resulting in errors down the line that need to be adjusted.

Many people are saying how existential and depressing this is, to the point where i was reconsidering watching it by how easily startled i get when people start discussing topics like this. Normally I'd feel helpless and dreaded but for some reason I just felt calm from start to end. The part of "We're going on an adventure" really resonated with me. Something about an adventure you can't opt out of. one that *everyone* has been and will be going through with us. really feels heartwarming and reassuring.

I have to be in a very specific nihilistic mood to want to watch your videos, so how serendipitous it was tonight for me to come home after an atypically disappointing day of work and disheartening couple of hours of community service to find your existential dread of a channel pop up in my home feed. I think the way you balance the philosophy and history with the humor and humility gained from your experience is very unique. I just wanted to show appreciation for your videos, which to me, are like sculptures. Each one, I appreciate as if it's the last, as they both inspire and humble me at the same time. The alloy you use is a perfect combination of intelligence, eloquence and wit. It goes without saying that person might be in turmoil at any given point and exposed to a fistful of scant words some might call a poem at precisely the right time, and be forever changed in a good way. That life is both harsh and worthwhile, and for a time I don't feel so alone here, because someone else clearly gets it. Thank you.
