Etihad DOWNGRADED me from their BEST to WORST business class seat

Today I'm flying with Etihad from Bangkok (BKK) to Abu Dhabi (AUH). I was originally due to fly on their A350 with the new Business Suites but unfortunately the aircraft was swapped at the last minute to a 777 with their oldest business class seat.

I had the same thing happen to me when flying Malaysia Airlines. I was initially booked on the throne seat of their A330-300, but then they aircraft swapped it for a A330-200, which had these EXACT same seats. My mind was blown by how these seats felt both claustrophobic AND exposed at the same time, and I even got the more private window seat. At least yours was in decent condition, mine was filthy and falling apart.

Yeah despite how dated it looks, at least it's still in 1-2-1 config unlike a lot of other airlines older products! Glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!

You didn't happen to try the "new" SAS business CPH-BKK route this winter that's operating between oktober and may? I'm considering trying it next winter, heard it's quite good.

It's a shame they didn't have my first meal options but the food was nice. I've flown Etihad in business a few times (a few years ago) and the catering was top notch. Thanks for watching!

I had an equipment swap from Club Suites to the old Club World on a LAX-LHR flight about a year ago so I know exactly how you feel haha. Nothing quite like looking directly at a stranger in the eyes and climbing over people to leave your seat 🤦‍♂️ It'll be a good day when they finally refurb all their aircraft with the new product!

@FlyManYann hahaha, I was travelling with someone luckily so it wasn't so bad, and we didn't have much choice as we did LHR>MIA which BA only uses two fully packed A380s each day. Good news that they are not retiring them now and plan to give them the new First and Club Suite cabins in 2026!

I hope BA does something cool with the refurbished A380s. The rumour is the new First Class will have a separate seat and bed which will be a huge upgrade. I wonder if they'll do an onboard bar or lounge or something similar?!

Very good video. I remember specifically booking Etihad A380 business and I was a bit gutted when it got swapped a few weeks before my flight for a 777. Well I managed to get on the Etihad A380 business eventually a few times after that. I've flown 777 business many times from their early days - always like the seat arrangements. The food was usually sensational. Sadly it seems the standards are slowly ebbing away. Not having your choice of main and dessert is pretty poor. Emirates and Qatar are better but I have a lot of nostalgia for Etihad. Will check out the First class video now!

Flew this product from MNL to AUH around 2012 (not sure). That time itself, I didn't like it as they have changed my seat last minute as they were saying there was a "VIP" that wanted that seat and then some of their food offerings weren't available. I haven't set foot on that airline since... I'm looking into giving them another chance but these kind of things like in your video stops me from trying... Great video and thanks for sharing your experience

That sounds annoying, I can understand why you'd avoid them since then. I would say if you manage to get a flight on Business Suites or even Business Studio you'll enjoy the experience - only the 777s have this old seat so just avoid routes flying those (and hope it doesn't get swapped like mine!). Also the brand new Terminal A at Zayed International Airport (AUH) is pretty impressive, definitely worth spending some time there. Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for watching!

I know you were looking forward to the new product and that this was a let down in comparison, but at least it gives you an incentive to go back and try again to fly in the new cabin. And at least we still got Happy Man Yann Champagne Smile. 😁🥂

Yep exactly - I'll try to get a flight departing from AUH to check out the new business class lounge at Terminal A. I visited it between this flight and my Etihad First flight the next day, it's a really impressive lounge spanning 3 floors.

I did consider changing my flight but I also had my Etihad First Class Apartments flight the next day and would have had to reschedule that too and I cared more about that one! (Also I had plans in London that evening when I landed).

I hear comments about seat swops on Qatar - but where Qatar differs, is their consistency with all their current, past and dated biz seats. I find the most comfortable QATAR seat for sleeping the old 2 x 2. However, QSuites are ... above the rest.

I think if you're travelling as a couple, or flying solo with no one next to you, the old school 2-2-2 config is actually great for sleeping. You get unlimited legroom unlike the cubby hole in Qsuite. However I think Qsuite is better in every other way and I do prefer it. I'll have to fly the new Etihad Business Suites to make a comparison (although it's basically the same seat as BA Club Suites just with nicer furnishings). Thanks for watching!

Bad luck with the downgrade- it's a really dated cabin on the 777 and your choices of meals being unavailable doesn't make it seem like a premium experience. Do Etihad operate AUH-BKK-AUH with a single crew or does the crew change in Bangkok?

Yeah it really is bad luck, the flights before me were on the A350 (Business Suites) and after on the 787-10 (Business Studio). The lack of meals choices shouldn't be happening though. I'm pretty sure the crew changes in BKK as the crew have a one night layover.

Normally I wouldn't be bothered at an airplane swap. But thinking you were going on the brand new to the old one is a bit of a bummer. There must have been a good reason given the plane they laid on wasn't fully stocked for the journey. So I'd just be glad there wasn't a huge wait while relief was sorted. But I wouldn't be flying for content. But to get somewhere asap, so I could see how it would be a downer for you. You'd probably of rather waited Hours for the content, but the majority would rather just get to their destination. So I feel the company did a good job in a bad situation

Emirates if it's on the A380, otherwise Etihad. I think the new Etihad business lounge in Abu Dhabi is better than the Emirates business lounge in Dubai too.

I've had great flights with Etihad in business before but yeah this particular experience didn't quite hit the mark. I'll get around to reviewing the new Business Suites at some point and hopefully that goes better. Thanks for watching!

Right?! I just checked and the aircraft I flew on is from 2005, but the Stelia Solstys I seat onboard is definitely older.

Haha right?! I've had a few last minute aircraft swaps with Qatar from Qsuite to the old 2-2-2 config. At least this swap was still in 1-2-1 config!

It's NOT a downgrade. Airlines never promise a certain seat product. Please stop amplifying this kind of views and expectations which are already technically wrong.

Yep you're absolutely correct, from the airlines point of view they sell you "business class" and that can be any seat/product, and they're free to change the aircraft at any point. But from a passenger point of view it definitely feels like a downgrade hence my "sensational" title.

Nice to know. Need to keep a check on which airlines are the worst culprits for this. I would be sooo p'ed off if this happened to me.
