First real road test of an electric bike project. This is a recumbent tadpole trike driven by a Bafang BSHD mid-drive motor with a 52volt Li-Ion battery pack. For this test I just wanted to get a feel for what it could do. Did the whole ride on throttle alone. Speed topped out at 40mph with the stock sprocket, averaged around 30mph for the whole test, going back and forth over the same 3 mile stretch of road, so wind and grade canceled out.
There's so much reserve power with the stock front sprocket that I wasn't really making use of the rear gears. I've since replaced it with a larger one.
At that speed, wind resistance is a significant factor. Long range plan is to add an aerodynamic weatherproof shell body.

Hi. I'm fairly late into this comment thread but I have a question. I'm installing a Bafang BBS02 system on my old RecumbentUSA trike from about 2008, bought it lightly used from Regis Hampton in 2011. I believe it is similar to a Performer JC-26-X. I am trying to figure out where to mount the battery. Mounting in front of the seat makes it seem to be too front heavy, like if I touch the front derailleur post when getting up, the motor and boom will drop to the ground. Was this a problem with your trike? My battery is 48 volts and probably less Ah than yours. (I bought it used and it came with little info.) I also have an old Actionbent with a cheap Chinese hub drive and rack battery that isn't very natural. Plus a TerraTrike with a 350 watt BionX system which has problems, but was very bike-like..

I have the battery mounted on the boom in front of the seat, but as far back as it will go, against the seat. It's a little front heavy, but not as much as you describe. Of more concern to me was keeping the weight low as possible, so it would not be tippy on turns. I also flipped the motor down and back as far as I could because that puts a lot of weight high and far forward. For that reason i did not want to put it up high in a bag on a rear rack above the wheel. I considered mounting it to the frame behind the seat as low as it would go. Figured even if it was off center that would be better than up high. Strapping it to the boom was just easy for me as a first test. That works fine so have not bothered to move it. On this trike, the weight is still way behind the front wheels, so isn't an issue. If anything, I might mount it on the underside of the boom where it would be lower and could be slit back further under the seat. Much depends on the geometry of your frame.

You're going to have to slow down, there, young man. Very intriguing style of cruising. I understand that under ideal conditions you can get about a twenty mile range, and the lithium batteries charge pretty fast, is that correct? My one concern is safety because those trikes are so low to the ground that I'd be nervous about commuting in car traffic.

Based on the first several rides, I'll easily get over 30 miles on a single charge. More if I pedal (or just slow down). The gearing on the trike makes it very efficient. And you're right, the low profile makes you hard to see in traffic. I've made a 6 foot LED whip light and rear flashers, which will help some. But a bike is always a big target on the road. I feel mostly comfortable in a dedicated bike lane, a separate path or trail is best.

@@eyeinhand Did you take a regular trike and install the battery and motor as a kit?

Jack Rabbit Yes it’s a stock off the shelf trike I got a couple of years ago, with idea of experimenting with electric power. I added the motor, battery and controls about a month ago. So far have put around 60 miles on it with the motor. Really impressed with it. I’ll post more video and photos of the build soon.

PLEASE get clipless pedals! Leg suck on trikes is already a huge risk, at that speed it could be fatal. It takes one mistake...

Good advice! I don't use clips for that reason. The pedals have clips on one side and straps on the other, and I never use the clips. These straps are very loose, to the point they don't do much good and are just annoying. Won't take much to remove them.

EyeInHand I think you might be confusing what I meant. Clipless pedals use cleats which lock your foot onto the pedals with special shoes so your foot can not come off the pedal while riding. Crucial for safe triking at any speed.
